The INS (Imigration & Naturalization Service?) has a brochur on the subject. I read it years ago. You can probably now download it from their website.
Back then 2 significant different cases stood out: I am sure that these will not have changed much:
1) Marrying just to gain someone citizenship is really frowned upon and the marriage will be ruled invalid, the "spouse" will be deported, and the US spouse will be charged with a fellony.
2) If you are really in love and plan to stay together and raise a family... Then it was OK (but you had to follow all the rules, and the spouse did not get US citizenship for 7 years).
If you were somehwere in the middle (i.e. freinds who were interested in each other - but not really committed for life) things could get very interesting depending on what happens.
