Wedding Venting..Rough Day

So not only did I almost get into two accidents today (a trunk ran me half off the interstate because he was swerving and some other jerk decided to *almost* blow a stop sign - at least he did stop). I went to buy make-up for my e-pics..so excited as I usually don''t wear make-up. Spent $130 and I thought well that''s a lot..but I got a ton of things for it so it''s okay. Got home and realized they didn''t actually sell me the concealer or foundation which is what I went for in the first place. So instead I have extras that I don''t exactly need..(including brushes for imaginary foundation, yay!) and now I have to drive the 30 miles back to buy what I need and return some of this since the price is now not okay with me..going to be around another $50..that''s just way too much money total. So now I am going to return stuff, too. *sigh*

The girl was nice and all..but anxious to leave. So I am now full of tools and lacking make-up (except for primer, eyeshadow, and powder).

Is this something they do often? FI keeps muttering about how I got fleeced, but I thought he was joking.

I mean it was so much money..I am a full-time student and only have a part-time job so that was like..a lot of money for me.

It would have been nice to at least get what I THOUGHT I was paying for!

The foundation and concealer did look great.

Brynn that is a good idea, I might try that tomorrow! I do have to at least go back and return all of the crap I realized I don't need. Ugh.

It wasn't a horrible day overall, it started out really fun because we did cake tasting and that went great!

I also found a jacket at Macy's on sale and got it for only $40 when it sold for $64. So that is the good stuff! It just got really stressful with the crazy drivers and then realizing I kind of wasted a ton of money.

But I am feeling better already, thanks for letting me vent.

ETA: OH the only other annoying/bad thing..FI's sister had to cancel our BM-dress order date..and it was pretty much my only free weekend, rawr. She couldn't help it, just a bit disappointed.

Ooh, Sarah, traffic can be scary! I don't blame you for being a bit shaken up!!
And as for make-up... I agree, that can be a real maze - and an expensive one! Every little colour, every tiny difference in tone... no wonder the make-up companies market so hard... they need to push a lot of product to make good profits, and, really, a lot of products can multi-task.

You've got primer (that's good!) eyeshadow (hopefully the only eye makeup you will need to buy, except possibly mascara? Have you got an eye pencil lying around?) and powder (well, that's probably a necessity as well, no?)

Just for my own interest - what colour eyeshadow did you get, by the way...?
Will you use anything for your eyebrows?

And don't worry about the foundation brush, you WILL need that. Also a concealer brush - well, I prefer to use one. And an eyeshadow brush and blusher brush, and maybe a bigger fluffy powder brush... although you can get all these cheap, from the pharmacy...

No doubt ItaliaHaircolour would have a lot of good tips on this type of stuff...did you see her recent thread of 'must-haves'?

i love talking about make-up, especially for something as imortant as a wedding! FAct is, though, everyone is there to see YOU get married, not to check out your make-up!! It's such an important day, you're really gonna be beautiful, regardless of the colour lipstick you wear!

Here is a list of make-up things I would consider myself..

foundation primer
illuminating foundation, or maybe foundation mixed with an dab of illuminator like 'spotlight'
concealer
powder

highligher shade (could be liquid - careful to have a light touch with liquid, so you don't ball up your foundation - or could be white/goldy metallic or pearly eyeshadow, or sparkly 'beauty powder) for light touch on cheekbones and under eyebrows (brow bone), also on your top lip cupid's bow
pinky or bronzer blush, (depending on skin tone, and whether you're going for a blushing bride or tanned bride look), to apply from forehead to cheek to chin, on either side of the face, in 'double C' move like these parentheses

maybe another blush colour, in a more intense pinky or possibly peachy colour, to apply just to the cheeks like traditional 'blush'. For all powder make-up including blush, tap brush on back of hand, or on packaging, before applying to your face. If you over apply blush, blot carefully, apply plain powder over, and blot again.

consider a lip pencil if you can be bothered
lip colour - really worth applying with a lip brush for your wedding. Blot and repeat if you can be bothered
lip gloss over the top, on bottom lip, to be OTT!

eyes: consider a brow pencil, if you already have very dark brows, consider a clear mascara to hold them in place. If they are dark, but patchy, consider a softer, lighter brown brow pencil or powder - matt eyeshadow could do - to softly fill in the gaps without making them completely over the top. Consider tinting blonde brows, perhaps? Saves a job for the day?
eyeshadow... light metallic or pearly colour all over, including on lid and inner 'v' of eye, then dark colour close to lashes around outer third of eye, possibly a medium colour as contour in the crease and on rest of outer eyelid (not too close to inner eye... too tricky for my limited skill, anyway!) Blend lightly so there are no super-hard edges. If your shadow is wet and dry, consider a slightly damp brush for greater colour intensity and staying power. But your primer should carry the day anyway...

blotting papers and powder compact
blot down carefully all over before leaving your 'powder room' and don't forget your blotting papers and powder compact - and gloss - in your purse
lets admit it, for blotting papers, generally I just use a clean tissue *gasp*
-powder compact wise possibly MAC blot - but nothing too chalky so you can reapply without buildup.
The blotting papers alone should really do most of the work, let's face it once you're married and you've had your photos you could hardly care less about the paint job...

that's my take on wedding make-up, anyway...

I do have some decent mascara that isn''t old (that''s one thing!) and I have some other decent eyeshadow colors. My powder I had has gone bad..so it is good to have new powder!

The color I bought was a green color - my eyes are green with brown and gold specks in them (hazel I guess?) so I usually use a green or brown eyeshadow. Okay, I will definitely keep the foundation brush then, sounds useful! Hmm..I am going to think about the concealer brush. It was over $20!

I know good brushes are expensive, but wow that costs almost as much as the foundation I now have to go back and buy.

I believe I have one of the big blush brushes lying around that I used for my old powder..I will look for that one. As for my brows, they are pretty dark brown, but the clear mascara is a great idea. Just got them waxed today actually, yay! All nice and neat!

Hey, if you know what concealer it is, you can order it from the MAC site--right now they have free shipping-but I think it ends soon, so you should check it out asap!

What other stuff did you get? Neutrals or fun colors? If they are neutrals, I wouldn't take it back if it were me, and I don't actually have any income. Lol. But I can't tell you how many neutral shadows, liners, etc I go through in a year--and I hardly ever wear makeup.

Primer is a godsend, so I wouldn't take that back--seriously it makes all of the difference--for me at least.

ETA: one thing about MAC is that they have REALLY expensive brushes. Earlier this year I spent probably at least $250 on shadows, liners, primer, lip gloss, lipstick, etc, and I would have spent even more, because I wanted a new set of brushes, but I went to Target and bought brushes there instead. I'm sure they aren't the same quality, but when I can buy 5 of them ($11 each) for one MAC brush(depending on the ones you buy--my friend bought one for $60!), I'm ok with it. (And only someone with a magnifying glass can tell the difference!)

If you're feeling keen, you could take the brushes back to mac, and buy the brushes at the pharmacy instead... also, for a concealer brush, a long pointy artist's brush (make sure it's soft!!) will do the trick nicely... and they are really cheap, even just picked up from the newsagent. That's what I use.

A lipstain can be really cheap, and effective for a natural blush (although a little scary for a wedding day perhaps, as a little difficult to control, you'd want to practice to get the size of 'blob' just right!) and as a base for lip colour.

grassy green eyeshadow with gold reflect? That's what I used for my wedding!! It's very wedding-ish, perfect!

So, do you have just the one colour? We'll say that's your 'mid colour'... That's what I had, and I just used a illuminator instead of the lighter eyecolour.

Instead of the darker colour eyeshadow, perhaps you'll consider using an eye pencil instead? Or possibly liquid eyeliner? I would consider putting on the eyeliner as your first eye makeup step, perhaps even quite a thick line, and then applying your eyeshadow over the top. It helps 'set' the liner, and can prevent harsh lines.

If you have a pencil, you can consider being tricky and putting the (waterproof!!) liner on the inside of your upper lids as well!!! This gives the look of lush lashes! I personally wouldn't apply liner on the inner rim of the bottom lid, though, as for me it makes my eyes look a little smaller and, well, a little harsh for a wedding...

If you want to go all out, you *could* consider an off-white waterproof eye liner pencil for the bottom rim. It'll look nice from the distance.

Lara the lipstain sounds awesome! I have plenty of time to practice, that''s the good news haha. And I think that''s the same eyeshadow! I also looove eyeliner..I don''t have any right now. I had a dark green Chanel one I used forever, but I had to throw it away eventually (it''d be about 5 years old now

). So I definitely need to splurge and pick up some more eyeliner at some point. I used to wear make-up all of the time years ago..and I did what you described about putting a think line of eyeliner on..that always looked awesome once I got the lighter eyeshadow over it. So I should go back to doing that!

It''s weird, I went to college and stopped dressing up as much and stopped wearing make-up other than lipgloss. Then I met FI and now he isn''t even used to me wearing make-up. Guess he''ll have to get used to it!

Is it possible that you have a MAC counter at one of the local department stores? The MAC people decided that it''d be a great idea to steal the MAC counter''s business at our Dillards by putting a MAC store literally across the street from the Dillards--that was stupid. Then you could get matched there, and try to order it online. If not I guess you''re going to have to go back to the store.

hmm, I have no doubts whatsoever that there are lots of people on this board that are a lot better informed than me - about lots of things! However, just like in real life, I love thinking about things, and discussing things...

FWIW...

I think you should choose your colours very carefully.
Are you going for a paler or tan look? for example... often, it actually pays to get a *slightly* warmer colour in your foundation...just so you don''t look too washed out. These are all expensive brands that I''m going to mention now, but I''m more a browser and a dreamer than a shopper these days (the second kid killed my ability to shop, unfortunately...)

Laura Mercier does a fantastic foundation. She also tends to sell a primer as well, you already have one, oh well. I did find though that the brands are only as good as their sales ladies /makeup technicians, so... my local Laura Mercier lady *really* impressed me.
Over the telephone, she guessed my shade (from previous matches from other brands) and sent me the PERFECT shade, Sandy Beige. Is that impressive, or what?
But the most interesting thing is... that through that sample, I actually found a dead-ringer in the Revlon brand, as well...

Revlon can be pretty good for quality, their mascara (3DXtreme) is terrific for me. Also, lipstick. Maybelline lipstick is one of those lovely supercheap bargains that feels and looks good - not really sure on the lasting power though... might be worth investing in one of those two-step paint lipsticks for your wedding... (or that lip /cheek stain, of course!)

I would try to find a long-lasting blush...
Chanel colour makeup tends to last, I can''t really remember what MAC is like for lasting power.

I have to confess, that Max Factor - yes, the super cheap brand - has really impressed me for lasting power in their eyeshadows, which is all of theirs I have used. I think the quality seems very good!! They probably have most of the product types you need to consider, although perhaps you might like to look at a wider range of colours.

Personally, I often find a wide, wide range like MAC a bit overwhelming, having all that choice makes you work really hard. And you *do* have your all-important main eyeshadow colour already!

It might really be worth checking out the Max Factor range, and seeing what of Max Factor you like...if you decide you don''t like it, then it''s not at all a disaster!!!

So here''s my update: I went back today and returned the unnecessary goods and bought my foundation and concealer. Guess what? I came up over $20 less than what I spent yesterday. So I get $20 back! Then I went to target and got all my basic brushes for $25 total!

So I spent about the same amount of money, but got a TON of stuff yaaay! So there''s the good news. Plus I think we /finally/ found an outfit for FI to wear during the engagement photos. Took long enough, sheesh. Anyway, thanks again for the support and letting me vent!

I absolutely NEVER Have liked MAC and will never use them! I hope your weekend ended nicely! I would explain to them that you were supposed to have concealer and foundation included in the package and they didn''t and now you need to return some stuff to stay in budget and still have foundation and concealer.
