A document I just spent way too long on editing just disappeared. Poof! I thought I saved it in a folder and was dutifully saving while I worked on it. But, when I went to print it after I closed it, nothing. Both I and FI conducted various searches to no avail. So, I had to admit it was gone FOREVER. Even though I thought I saved it in a folder, I probably didn''t. Whatever edits I made --despite the fact that I was hitting save--were to made to a nonexistent document. I am just really, really frustrated.

And, had to share.

Was it a word document?

When that happened to me recently, strmdr saved my bacon with this hint:

It was a Word document indeed. I tried the tips that strmdr suggested and it didn''t work for me. Grrr. Thank you for the link though and for the empathy!

I''m so sorry.

hmmm, are you sure its gone forever? if you keep hitting save, it must have saved it somewhere, can you check all your drive? hmmm, there must be a way. Have you tried to go to your start menu and click on the Run options to search that way type in "c" (when I type in C it brings up a bunch of local document that I have saved) and it will bring up some of the history that has saved onto your local settings?

ETA: if it doesn't show up for you then I'm so sorry that you lost your file

it sucks, I remembered when my computer crashed and lost my final paper over 25 pages (that was over eight years ago and still remember it well) what an awful feeling.

If you hit save it was saving somewhere.. probably in to a temp folder. Windows will do this by default if you havent told it where you want to store the file. So if its absolutely critical then spend some tedious time searching for *.doc anywhere on your harddrives or go in to every folder called TEMP on the C drive to see if the word doc is there. If your using Office 2007 then its a .docx extension.

Good Luck.

Do you know what you named the file? If so go to Start/Search/For Files and type in the name you saved it as.

Or try opening Word and go to File at the top – it should list your most recent documents.

Well, I have tried the suggestions and it didn''t work for me. That''s okay. I had a hard copy of my document with edits and could do it over. It was just frustrating to realize my document was gone last night. I know better now.

Thank you for your tips! Some of them I had never heard of before.
