Yuck! There's a guy in my office who quit smoking recently and started vaping. Now he's decided it's okay to do so at his desk. His office is about 30 feet from mine. Today he announced he's vaping blue-raspberry. It smells like a crappy car air freshener and is giving me a headache and making me nauseous. What the frig? Who does that? Is this okay? Sometimes I have to check myself because I can be very sensitive to things like this but I don't think this one's on me.

Thanks, SMC. I live in Pennsylvania but not Philadelphia.

He stopped for the moment. The VP who runs our office is out today. It's no coincidence that he's doing it while she's not here. If he "lights up" again, I'm saying something. I'm sure he would rather me say something to him than the VP when she returns on Monday.

I've had colleagues ask others to stop wearing scented lotions because they were sensitive to smells and it made them nauseous. I think that you are totally justified in asking him to stop.

I hate that people vape everywhere in public. It might not have nicotine, but it still has other chemicals and smells, and I don't want that near me.

I'd take in a big aerosol can of Aqua Net hairspray and every time Mr. Vape puffs I'd spray the AN for an amount of time equal to his puffing. He11, climate change is fake so we have to assume there's also no hole in the ozone layer -- spray away!

It is my opinion this is not OK. As a manager, I would not permit it in my office out of respect for others. There's one vaper and he always goes outside. Just like I can't stand the smell of bathroom spray (most which contain known carcinogens ) to come wafting out of the bathrooms but that can't be helped. I just can't stand anything smelly being sprayed around the office whether it's perfume, hairspray, air freshener, etc. One person's pretty smell is another's gag reflex smell. Respect your coworkers.

And this is coming from a smoker... Do it outside. I don't smoke or allow it in my home either and that includes vaping.

My company does not allow vaping on site.

I don't think you would be out of line if you approached HR and asked them to make "no vaping indoors" a company policy.

Not acceptable at work, I'd ask him once only to step outside with it and if he refuses, email to management for quick resolution.

I was recently on public transport and the person sitting in front of me was vaping. I felt quite ill by the time I was able to move, and I was more than a little annoyed.

But I was under the impression that vaping does contain nicotine (you can choose your nicotine level in the fluid you buy iirc), and is typically not permitted indoors or in public areas where smoking would be banned. I would definitely speak to HR.

Vapping = smoking where I work. So not okay. He's gutsy.

cmd, you can buy nicotine free but lets face it, most use some % of nicotine. Vapping is actually really bad for you.

My husband is about to lose it at work, he has terrible allergies. I think we have gotten TOO liberal in policies. He has a gentleman that was moved to his area that seems to be a "problem" person and has been moved around to each program in the division. Anyway, the man has a fish tank (30 gallon and it stinks) because he NEEDS them, the fish calm him, he has a diffuser because the scents help his anxiety, bosses won't say anything to him because he is a little person and they are afraid he will go to Human resources and yell discrimination

Your husband should file a formal complaint to HR if management doesn't address the issue. He counts too!!! He has allergies! They don't count?? I feel his pain. I am very scent sensitive and if I were subjected to that I'd be going up the ladder till it was fixed. If the bosses don't want to "say" anything to the problem then they absolutely can accommodate your husband by moving him away from the stink.

They shouldn't have allowed him a fish tank in the first place! I've never heard of such a thing. If you want to see fish, make it your screen saver.

Autumn, that's awful! The accommodations made for some people at the expense of others is troublesome.

Surprise - now that the VP is in the office - no vaping. If it happens again I'll say something to him first then to our Office Manager or VP if it doesn't stop. I don't think it'll come to that. What's weird is this guy is super nice and personable - but obviously either oblivious or inconsiderate.

Good luck, Pup. I'd be surprised if you don't win this one.

But the fish tank. Wow, I'd be very interested to see where this goes. Ugh.

Puppmom, You stated that this person is nice. Why don't you just ask him to please vaping and tell him that it is really bothering you. That may be all that is needed to put an end to the vaping.

Well this tells me what I need to know. If he doesn't do it when the boss is there yet he does it at other times he knows it is not right and he is certainly not oblivious or he wouldn't stop vaping when the head people are around. So shame on him and yes I would just politely ask him to please not vape while in the office. It is inconsiderate and I think he knows it.

My husband is the supervisor of his division, Good news is that person was moved yesterday, now it's someone else's problem and he's been moved several times for various things
