Hi all...

I have a question I can''t seem to find the answer to, after searching online for the last hour or so!

We got some bad news today...

We have known for a while now, the company DH works for is closing their Michigan office and replacing his job out in San Fransisco. We considered the move briefly, but it''s not a good move for us at this time.

So.

Originally DH was told he''d have a job through the end of July, but learned today he only has through February. ugh. Merry Christmas.

We know he can collect unemployment benefits, however, his boss said they may continue to use him for jobs on a contractor basis for a short time.

So the question is, can he collect unemployment benes if he is getting contract jobs from his old employer?

Second question, if he does do contract work, in lieu of collecting unemployment benes for a time, would that make him ineligible for unemployment benes, once the contract jobs were complete?

We''re not sure if it''s better to use the unemployment benes right off the bat, or if doing contract jobs would mess that up somehow. He''s concerned that if he leaves the company as a ''contract employee'' rather than as a full time employee, it may change his ability to collect unemployment. Obviously we need to bring in the most money possible until he finds another job...which is almost impossible in Michigan.

This is hitting me super hard...this was his dream job and we have gone through many hard financial times already...we were basically just getting back on our feet...so it''s like a punch in the gut, especially right before Christmas.

Any advice is appreciated.

given the financial implications of the answers to your question, i''d suggest calling your local edd and/or looking it up at the state website.

here in california i believe but am not certain that working as a contractor will definitely reduce the unemployment payment and could also negate being able to collect. the rules are very strict about earnings in quarters which make one eligible.

i''d be on the phone now with your closest office. also on the computer with the state website.

sorry you''re going through this. sorry that a move to sf isn''t in the cards for you now.
