hello!
my 8.5 mo old son has his first real fever... he woke up last night burning up and had an axillary temp of 101.4 (which i know corresponds to a real temp of somewhere between 102-103). i gave him some tylenol, rocked him, etc, but he didn''t want to go back to sleep in his crib. so he slept in bed with me the rest of the night.

he''s been moderately fussy all day, although when i give him tylenol or motrin, he does MUCH better, and it brings the temp down nicely too. we took a rectal temp (poor baby!), and got 102.5 at one point. he has basically no symptoms though. no runny nose, cough, he''s not pulling on his ear, no vomiting/diarrhea...NOTHING. he just really doesn''t want to eat (he''s nursed a bit and had a little water from a cup, but no solids), and only wants to be held, which isn''t really like him.

ANYWAY, he''s also hardly napped today, and i know he is EXHAUSTED. we have been working hard on his sleeping and have done some C.I.O, and he''s been doing really well (basically doesn''t cry at night anymore and only a bit for naps). but, i do NOT want to make him cry it out when he''s sick...

he keeps falling asleep on me, and then waking up SCREAMING when i put him in his crib.

any advice?

am i completely ruining all the hard work we''ve done with CIO by trying to nurse him or rock him to sleep? and what if he ends up in bed with me again??

HELP!!!

No expert here but we had the same symptoms last week with our little guys. Went away after a day or two but not before we went to the doctor and they wanted to check both urine and blood. Got the all clear so she sent us home with motrin.

We just tried to make them as comfy as possible and dealt with it or a few days.

thanks neat! i know there''s really no answer other than just getting through it...but UGH.
but it is nice to know that others have been there too (of course i know that, but it''s nice to HEAR it i guess...).

if he''s still bad tomorrow, i will call his pediatrician (i''m a bad mom, and didn''t want to bug her on the weekend).

Even if they don''t pull on their ears, it could still be an ear infection. Or teething. Or strep or tonsillitis. Or some random fever causing virus. Ugh-it sucks so much when they''re little and can''t tell you what''s wrong! I hope he does ok for you tonight, but if not, have the Dr. check him out tomorrow. Poor lil guy. You won''t blow all your hard work on getting him to sleep and such by nursing or rocking him to sleep. It''ll just be a little hiccup in his progress, and once he''s feeling better, he''ll get back on track in no time!

Nah you aren''t a bad mom! I didn''t call right away either-we had their 6 month appointment the next day so I just asked her then.

haha...thanks guys. i was hoping i could write the whole thing off to teething (my gosh, the kid is 8.5 months with NO teeth yet), but i think the temp is a little too high for that.

it''s 9pm here, and he''s currently passed out on my back in my beco carrier. he screamed bloody murder everytime i tried to put him down! i have a feeling he''s going to be in bed with me tonight... oh well...hopefully he''ll actually sleep and i can enjoy a little cuddling. :)

sorry to hear the poor little one''s sick. DS was sick a few days ago with a fever of almost 103 and he was fussy and clingy, but i knew it was cause he was sick. so even at 19 months, they are still all about cuddles and hugs and being carried when they are sick. he doesn''t have a fever anymore and he is back to his old self, sleeping by himself and not screaming out for me at night.
i hope he feels better. being sick is no fun at all!! poor baby.

sorry he''s sick. My son is 8mo too and had his first fever few wks back. I have 3 kids and when they are sick, all schedules and routines are off. Some kids stick to their routines even with a fever but others get very cranky. My 2nd child was like this. She didn''t want anything but me...she was like a growth on my side until she felt better.

I would just keep doing what you are doing. Follow your son''s signs. If you don''t want to keep giving him meds you can put him in a tepid bath (sometimes gets them out of a funk) and also brings down their fever.

Hope he''s better soon.

BTW if the fever continues, take him to the ped so they could check for an infection (like an ear infection). My daughter''s ear infections never gave her any symptoms except for fever.

LOL my son is the same age with no teeth yet either!

The only time T has ever had high fevers like that is with ear infections. If he''s still not feeling better, I''d get him checked out just in case. Give him lots of hugs and kisses from us!

thanks burk, puffy, and atroop!

if you can believe it, our night actually wasn''t THAT bad...finally got him to sleep (in his crib) around 9:30, which is VERY late for him...he was up at 1:30 and again at 5. but he slept in his crib! at 5, he didn''t want to go back down, so i brought him into bed with me for some love...

i called the pediatrician this morning and am waiting for a call back from the nurse, although i do think he''s better. still refusing all food except cheerios!! and a little breast milk. the fever is definitely down from yesterday!

we survived!!
