The dust worked! Thanks everyone! I just had two great interviews at different schools, and I was offered both positions. I''m not sure what to do. Here''s the situation (sorry for the novel):

Job A: part time (19 hours per week) beginning immediately and ending at the end of the school year. This job is being described as a reading interventionist -- working 1:1 or with small groups of kids (not sure what grade level, but most likely the lower grades -- 1-3 perhaps). Basically, it’s a step above tutor and a step below literacy facilitator/coordinator. I''d sit in on team planning meetings, and help teachers and students. The salary would be an hourly wage. It''s not the same as a teacher''s salary. I''d probably be able to work 2 full days and then one day half time to reach 19 hours. I could use the other 2.5 days of the week to sub, tutor, do something else, etc. This is a new position, and the principal said I could help design it as we go along. She seems really excited about me possibly joining the staff, and she seems willing to do whatever she can to help get me more hours somehow, just not in the interventionist position. This isn''t guaranteed though. My commute would be 40 minutes.

Job B: full time (beginning immediately) until March, with the possibility of it extending to the end of the year (won''t know until closer to that time though). This is an interim 1st grade classroom position. I''ve taught 1st grade before, but it was about 5 years ago. I know the age group really well though. I feel comfortable with this grade, and it’s just one grade below what most of my classroom experience has been in. It’s a salaried position, which is good, and it would keep me at a professional level. The principal and VP I met with were great, and they seemed enthusiastic. My commute would be 30 minutes.

Both positions have pluses and minuses. I think I know which one I should take, but I wanted to get others’ opinions. Please help! Thanks in advance!

b. good luck which ever you choose

I would go with job #2 because it''s the closest thing to what your career is in and offers more stability, even for a short term. I think it''s a foot in the door and will set you up well for a position next year. I think the RI position would be fulfilling, however I''d be worried about not being challenged enough or feeling like a peer to the other staff members. It''s also part time.

Which pays better?

oh that is great news Zoe!!! Go with your gut

Congratulations on the job offers.

I think you want job B; if I am right then you should grab it.

Hi Zoe,
Congratulations! Receiving two job offers in this economy is great -- you must feel really good!

I have a question for you: did the principal from Job B indicate whether or not they would be able to offer you another position in March (if the current position isn''t extended)? I think that would have a big effect on what I would do if it were me.

FANTASTIC news!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations on your prospects!

Questions to help you decide:

1) Where would you be happiest?
2) Where would you be the most inspired?
3) Where would you be the most inspirational?
4) What career level do you plan to be in someday?

Congrats Zoe!!! Good luck deciding!! How wonderful to be offered both jobs!!!

Two offers is exciting! I don''t have any real advice but it is a good problem to have!

Congrats!! So happy dust worked for you!! I''d pick job B if I were you since it''s the closest to your career. Good luck, Zoe!!

Thanks so much Crown1, HH, Skippy, Steel, Wyndham, Lorelei, SS, and Kaleigh!

HH -- I''m leaning towards the second job because as you said, it offers more stability and it''s part time. It might be hard to fill the other 2 days, and even if I sub, there''s no guarantee that I''d be needed during one of those days. The other thing that I thought of was that because the second job is salary based (and pays more), I''d be paid for vacation weeks and holidays off, etc. With the first job (since it''s hourly), if I don''t work, I don''t get paid.

Hi Wyndham! I do feel really good about this. I''ve had a h*llish year so far, so it feel awesome to have two good offers. I''m sure I would have a good chance of being considered for something else in the school if it comes along and my interim position ended in March. If I take the job, I can also let the principal from the first school know that I may be available at that time. I''ll definitely ask her to keep me in mind.

SS -- good questions to think about! Thanks for taking time to write them down. While I need to sit and really think hard about all of them, I can say that the reading interventionist job would be great if I was looking to make the leap from the classroom to working as a reading specialist. Honestly though, I''m not. This would be a good opportunity for this year, but it''s not one that I''d like to have for years and years.

Okay, after all this typing, reading responses, questions, and my own answers, I think I may have made a decision. I''m going to the first grade school to observe on Monday morning and get a feel for the kids and the environment, but if it looks good, I think I need to go with that job.

I know I''ve been rambling, but it''s been helpful to get my thoughts out. I appreciate your help!

Thanks Tacori and Luckyeshe! Tacori -- it is a GOOD problem to have right now. You know what I''ve been working through this fall (school and non-school related), and this is certainly a welcome "problem" to have. Thanks friend!

I really am so happy for you! I think observing the classroom is a good idea. Hopefully it will prevent another bad situation. D must be thrilled!!! What a relief. Just think of that bedroom furniture!

Yay Zoe! Congratulations! I say go for the full time job provided you like what you see in the observation.

Ha! You know our new dining set? The bedroom set is the same dark wood, plain, simple design. Love it. It will have to wait though, sadly.

D IS thrilled. We're going to celebrate tonight while we figure out which one makes sense to take. I know it's going to be the first grade job though (in M-----); I can feel it. Knowing him, he's going to whip out the computer and make a spreadsheet to analyze it all. Nerd. Oh yeah you're right T, M------ is a hike from here. 40 minutes back roads the whole way, in the middle of nowhere. Oh well.

Thanks Thing2! I'm excited for Monday morning.

Zoe, I have no great advice (and it sounds like you''re going with option B, anyway!) but I wanted to give you a big ol'' congratulations!!!! I know it''s been a rough year and leaving your last position was a brave move, but I think this is going to all work out for the best and I''m just really happy for you!

Thanks NEL! I appreciate it a lot! I''m not 100% sure yet, but I''ll have it all figured out soon.

I''d take B as it keeps you at a professional level. I''m sure you''ll make the right decision.

Yay for First grade!! I think you made a very wise choice Zoe!!! Congrats!!!

I am not sure I can count on job B for more stability. However, as it is full time instead of part time, it is considred more "professional, so it carries more weights on your resume and will better help you land your next job which will be much better in terms of growth, stability, and pay.

Zoe, congratulations!!

I think if you''re feeling one over the other, that''s a definite indicator of which is right for you!

Zoe, it sounds like you''ve made your choice so I''ll just say congratulations! Awesome news on the job front for you. I hope it turns out to be a great position and that you''re happy at the new school

Thanks April, Kaleigh, FancyDiamond (welcome to PS!), Yssie, and Kimberly! I appreciate it! I''m not going to lie -- it has been nice having a few weeks "off," but I''m looking forward to getting back to work and bringing home a paycheck again.

Congrats, Zoe! I would pick B, too, but I think it is best to see how you feel after the observation. I hope that it goes well!
