Everyone in the neighborhood loves our long-time UPS driver. He''s a wonderful person and recently got married after meeting his now wife again at his high school reunion. She''s expecting twins (a boy and a girl) this fall. I was going to give them an individual gift, but I know they are financially stretched, and thought it might make more sense for a bunch of us in the neighborhood to give a group gift. I''m comfortable I can raise at least $500 and maybe more. I was thinking a twin stroller or car seats, but thought I''d go straight to the pros.

What would you recommend if we have $500 to spend?
What if it''s $600?
And what if people are really generous and I have $750?

Thanks for any info you can give me!

Honestly? Gift certificates for diapers!

Or here are some other ideas:

-Carseats with a Snap N Go double stroller (this is a LIFESAVER in the early months)
-Cribs and mattresses
-A Maclaren double stroller (these rock, they fit through doorways and are super easy to fold and store). They twin ones can be used from birth and are a great all-around stroller for after the snap n go.

Those are a few of the big purchases we've made and loved. If you know they are runners a double Bob would be nice...but it's a big bulky stroller so if they aren't runners I would skip it.

I would stay far away from the really overpriced twin strollers if they are strapped for cash. I think they would much prefer one of the more practical gifts I outlined above than a really ridiculously priced stroller IMO.

Thanks, NF!

I''m thinking the Maclaren twin stroller because they could use it longer. Does that make sense or would you rather have had the Snap N Go?

I''m not a twin mom, but I''m a mom :)

I think if they are cash strapped, gift certs are the best because you don''t know what they might have already or other gifts. Gift certs can be used for essentials like diapers or formula if they are using that or clothes ore whatever. Or if they need bigger items like stroller or cribs, they can use for that too. I would do gift certs for a babies r us if you have one near by. That store was a lifesaver when my kids were babies. Or if there is not, target has that kind of stuff too.

What a caring and thoughtful thing to do.

Well honestly you can buy both with your budget! They both have their purpose-but you might want to check with them to see if they have a stroller picked out too-it''s a personal thing sometimes.

I also recommend gift cards or diapers if you don''t know what they want/need. You would not believe the amount of diapers we went through the first few weeks...

I hear you on the gift card. That''s normally what I would do, but I think based on his personality he would have a hard time accepting a gift card for $500 or whatever the amount is. He''d think it was too much. And I don''t know if it would violate a UPS rule or anything because it''s almost like cash. So that''s why I was thinking a gift gift instead of a gift card. Or just getting a gift card for whatever amount we have left after buying the stroller(s) so he''d be okay with it.

If I''m really off base though on buying a stroller, please let me know. I don''t have a registry to check because I don''t think they''re doing that. She moved across the country to marry him, doesn''t know anyone here, and these are "late in life" babies. Both have teenagers already.

Hmmm i hear you on the giftcard thing...but you could get around the UPS gift rule by giving it to his wife!

Could you try and elicit from him what they have already and what they don't have? Or whether they have picked out a stroller already?

It's just really hard to know what type of stroller/system they would want-a lot of people are very very picky about strollers.

That being said...I really have never heard of anyone that doesn't love their Maclaren or Snap N Go (twin or singleton moms)...but there are always firsts! You could easily buy both with your budget. Here is the Maclaren we have and we love it:

The coffee brown is what we have and it comes with different seat covers and straps to mix and match which is fun. But it's very unisex which is great for a boy/girl combo. I LOVE mine. Might want to make it easy and buy from someplace like Babies R Us so they can return it to the store if it isn't working for them. Many places sell them.

I love the coffee brown for the Maclaren because it''s the color of the UPS truck. How perfect!

As a new mom of boy/girl twinks here''s my 2 cents...I would def try and work around being able to give a BRU gift card bc that''s what is really needed!...a stroller is a great gift but very personal imo ...I wouldn''t want a stranger picking such am impt thing out for me...I want to go and look and see and research which stroller is best. I wish the gifts I received were gift cards lol. But whatever u do decide to give ...I think its very admirable of u to go to such lengths and appreciate him and his family like that!

Not a twin mom but I love the gift idea (and I have seen NF''s beautiful stroller). Just include the gift receipt and then you are set. They could return it for store credit if they need or want to.

I like the stroller idea, or two carseats.

A lot of parents want safe carseats and they can''t always afford the really nice ones. Two Britax or Peg Perego seats would come out to maybe $600.

hehehe, as soon as i read this, i was reminded of this and had to grin because i thought it was so cute. anywho, back to your question, i agree with the gift card camp because there are so many things that babies need a LOT of but that people don''t typically buy a lot of as a gift--diapers, bottles, bibs, pacifiers, etc. people tend to go for the "nicer" gifts and forget that parents, particularly those of twins, are going to spend a heckuva lot more money on diapers than on a stroller, so the help is great. i threw my friend a baby shower last year and made a HUUUUUUGE diaper cake as our gift to them. not only did they get a couple hundred diapers out of it, but we decorated the "cake" with other baby necessities and a little stuffed animal. if you feel funny about giving a gift card, this could be a good way to go, too, and not as personal should they be wanting to pick a specific stroller.

Lol. I didn''t even think about that! It''s a very stylish stroller if I do say so myself...I have the two blue/brown striped seat liners on mine right now. I get a lot of compliments on it!
