Turkey prices

What are Turkey prices like in your area?
I picked up 2 20 pounders at 89 cents a pound which is the best deal so far here for the larger ones.
12 pounders are 85 cents a pound.

Our Albertson's is selling a Honeysuckle for 35 cents a lb if you spend $25 at the grocery store (which isn't hard to do). hehe I am not sure what Whole Foods is selling their turkeys for; I saw them the other day when I was picking up chicken but didn't check price. My sister cooks the turkey so I don't pay attention. I am bringing the pies and a side dish.

39c a pound is nice.
If I find them for that I will buy 2 more.

Karl, they limit 1 per customer according to the ad though. That is a good price but I don't really like turkey so I don't buy one. I wished I did because everyone seems to love turkey! eta: it will be interesting to see the prices around the US and which brands? Don't brands make a difference? Two years ago I saw a smallish turkey at Whole foods for $60.

yea its a loss leader to get people in the store.
I love turkey my brother and I decided we are going to get together and have a turkey once a month if we can find them at a reasonable price.
They last 6-8 months in the freezer so going to get 5 or 6 of them as budget allows between now and the end of the year.

After watching Food Inc. I can''t buy a cheap turkey. I guess that is good. I will only buy an animal that was raised on an organic farm in a pasture and not caged or even those advertised as "free-range". If the pricing doesn''t reflect the true cost...or fair cost...to a real farmer, than I won''t buy it. I don''t eat that much animal protein anyway, so I hope this new philosophy of mine is doable. If it does, I will eat less but eat better. Wish me luck. Actually this is only applicable to my own personal purchase. If I am eating someone else''s home cooked food, all deals are off. I am a good hungry guest. As long as I can buy a turkey for less than my pendant setting, I''ll be happy.

We just recieved the Trader Joe''s Thanksgiving flyer in the mail today, and they''re listing them at $1.79/lb. Sounds pricey, BUT they already come brined with sea salt, so that''s a huge plus!

We don''t spend TG here at home- we head east across the country to DH''s parents house in PA. Their turkey last year was less than memorable (OK, it was horrible!), so we were seriously left wanting. We were at our local TJ''s on the Sunday after (once we were home), and they were selling them for less than half-price, around $.50/lb. We bought a wee bird and had TG all over again that afternoon!

Ditto miraclesrule! Although I''ve been trying to eat ethically and sustainably raised meats since I stopped being vegetarian, not just because of the movie. I can get a turkey through my buying club for $3.10/lb, which is a good price for free-range birds raised using organic practices (though the farm isn''t certified organic, which doesn''t bother me). I still haven''t ordered, though, so I may end up with a Whole Foods bird if the farm is sold out.

Either way, it''s worth it to me...especially since I boil down the carcass for stock, so I get a lot of use out of one bird.

Oh Octavia, you are so lucky. I am trying to arrange my own "buying club". I think $3.10 is a great price. I have been an organic farmers market food freak for years, but more recently have become even more concerned due to food safety issues.

But I would still to honored to join Karl and Soon2be''s for TG weekend at their place and eat turkey and talk about the "other" Octavia over appetizers and dessert.

I will have to check out the prices next time I go. My market gives you a free one , after you have spent such and such. I always donate that to someone that needs one. I know the people there going on 23 years, and know they have helped make TG a great holiday for many families. That''s what it''s all about.

You are right that is what is about; that is awesome Lisa!!! i am proud to have you as my friend!

It is nice to hear how people helping others out during the season.

I love when schools adopt a family for Thanksgiving or for the holidays, etc. I remember in middle school we would do that and it felt good to help and of course still does.

I got one at WF this weekend for a dinner we threw and it was $3.39 a lb. Heidi but not sure if it was Organic... I just wanted to go for the smallest one they had, 10.4lb.

But a friend tonite at the dinner told me about the TJ''s ones, already brined, organic for $1.79! I am going there next time for sure. I even had to brine it myself. Boo. Turkey sure was good tho.
