VP Mike Pence and the far right must be jerking off right now.
Thursday may be a very very sad day for all Americans who value equality.

As they say, two steps forward one step back.

Of course in the long run this will backfire.
Equality is right.
Equality is too powerful to be taken away and hush up.

Freedom of religion cannot be the right to harm others.
What if your religion says you can own humans as slaves?
Actually the bible DOES say that.
Even in the new testament Jesus gave directions for slave ownership.

It's so discouraging, Kenny. I feel as though you could start a new thread of something crazy that Trump or his administration is doing, has said, wants to do.... on the hour.

My head just exploded. I'll be on the front line of the war against religion. And you know that EO doesn't include all religions right? Pretty sure "freedom" is weighted more toward christianity.

ugh this is disturbing and upsetting.

I feel like I'm just out of emotion. It's just depression at this point. :nono::nono::nono::nono:

How come other civilized nations are PROgressing in terms acceptance and basic human rights and we are so intent on REgressing?

And they complained about Obama and EOs. I do believe there will be lawsuits.

Well I may be religious and believe in God and all that but I do NOT force my beliefs on others which is exactly what Trump is doing.

Land of the free but only if your Christian! :angryfire:

Sort of reminds you of the muslim nations... you know if you aren't a Sunni muslim they will kill you. So, what's next fundamental christian vs catholics? meh.

There is going to be an even bigger backlash when all is said and done. I for one am sick of keeping my mouth shut and not speaking up in fear of offending someone about their religion. I have every right NOT to practice one and I'm tired of it being shoved down my throat everywhere I go.

(Stephanie my post is not at all directed at you, I don't want you to think I'm singling you out. I live in the Bible Belt and Christianity absolutely permeates almost everything here.)

I talked about an education/workforce initiative in the America is Regressing thread today. What I did not include was how religion plays a giant role in the resistance of the school and townspeople to change and improvement. And, oddly enough, (but not so odd once you understand the demographics) the very same town has the largest rural PRIDE event in the state of Indiana. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face--vote Republican, be for RFRA, gloat over it getting passed, and lose a ton of effing business because of it. Hoosier are a big pile of dumbasses for the most part.

I think this EO violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. This isn't about the right to believe. It's about establishing precedent for christians to determine how they practice their religion. No haircuts, wedding cakes, medical care, basic human rights and civility to LBGTs because it violates/offends a religious belief and prevents a believer from practicing a religion. The republicans are ignoring that the numbers of non christians and non believers in the US has been growing over the past 7 years. They need a comeuppance.

Before I have to get off my lazy a** (not that I really have to to do this reseach) and go look it up, what does our ACLU say about this, Matata? Do they think this executive order has a chance in hell (I won't use the term "a prayer" about this evil thing!) of making it? Or will some sensible federal judge strike it down instantaneously? kenny, have you read anything?

I was writing while you were posting, Matata. Thank you for the above.

Here's what ACLU said in January. https://www.aclu.org/blog/speak-fre...-freedom-still-discrimination-president-trump

Discrimination Under the Guise of ‘Religious Freedom’ Is Still Discrimination, President Trump
Following press reports that the White House was considering issuing an executive order that would roll back and undermine nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people, the administration made clear that President Trump would not repeal a landmark executive order signed by President Obama in 2014 that prohibits businesses that contract with the federal government from discriminating against LGBT people.

But this is only part of the story.

President Trump has surrounded himself with a vice president and cabinet members who have repeatedly sought to sanction discrimination against LGBT people and women in the name of religion, and nothing in the White House’s statement makes clear that these efforts are now behind us. During the campaign, Trump pledged to sign into law the so-called “First Amendment Defense Act,” the most sweeping, anti-LGBT bill in Congress. In addition, Trump transition officials reportedly gave private “assurances” to a member of Congress who was trying to attach an anti-LGBT religious exemption to the defense bill that the new administration would address the issue early in 2017. Needless to say, there remain significant concerns about what the Trump administration may be planning.

Religious freedom is a core American value that we cherish and defend, one that is protected in the Constitution. We all have the freedom of belief regarding God and religion, including the freedom to act on those beliefs. But freedom of religion doesn’t give any of us the right to discriminate against other people.

Any executive order that would sanction discrimination under the guise of “religious freedom” would be seen for exactly what it is: a direct assault on the rights and dignity of LGBT people and women. The ACLU has a message for President Trump: You cannot authorize discrimination by executive fiat. We won’t stand for it. Not now. Not ever.

If the administration continues to pursue policies that are unlawful and unconstitutional, the ACLU is prepared to continue to take them to court to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of everyone in this country.

Kenny, I'm sorry this is happening in your country. I know this was a hard won struggle and it's incredibly disappointing to see it be set back again.

Thanks.

Actually, I see some consolation ...
IMO four years of America swallowing Cheeto's spooge will be such a COLOSSAL disaster that the conservatives will be unelectable for a long long time.
Fortunately some of his legacy will be reversible, just as Cheeto has reversed Obama's healthier meals for school lunches.

Indeed. And just why I think my heart can't sink any lower...

and this is why I donate to the ACLU!

Should Trump sign such an EO I am sure it would be disputed in federal court within days. But the act of signing an unconstitutional EO that never goes anywhere will do great harm to our country and deepen our divide even more.

And they complained about Obama and EOs. I do believe there will be lawsuits.

But remember that the Supreme Court is majority (uber) conservative now. I'm actually very concerned that if all the challenges to Trump's EOs go to the Supreme Court, that the challenges would be struck down.

During the campaign I heard a lot of young people say there's no difference between Hillary and Trump and it brought back memories of Gore and Bush. I tried to tell them that there are long term consequences if Trump gets elected...we are starting to see the results.

I can't understand how people could be so ignorant -- those who voted for Trump and those who didn't vote. I can't understand how people could be so cruel to support policies that harm people. I can't understand how people could be so selfish to deny rights that costs them nothing to grant. It's all so depressing

It's all about being brainwashed into believing you are in a group that's superior to that bad group.

Sadly, equality ends their superiority.
Legislated equality must really really suck eggs when you've gotten used to feeling superior.

Hence ... what's happening now ... reclaiming "Glob"-given superiority.

Oh yes, you are right. I remember trying to change people's minds from being pro Nixon.. ( my mom always said there's no accounting for taste. I just find it all so depressing.

The more I think about this, the more I think that this is just one more opportunity for the federal courts to shoot down Trump. It is patently illegal. The issue was already decided. He cannot change Supreme Court decisions with Executive Orders. Yes, I very much fear what the b*stard can do, but he cannot do this. He can start a nuclear war.

I have, however, given enough to the ACLU to have gotten a membership card this year, as I told Matata in another thread. It may be time to give some more money, though, although now I have started giving to Planned Parenthood for the first time! (Such a tame cause. Who ever thought I'd be giving to them?)

Deb :wavey:

It's called 'Dominionism' and it is very real and VERY dangerous.

Land of the free but only if you're Christian.

It's been bothering me, but I couldn't edit it! :x

Here's something I have been wondering; if this happens to pass then it's a 2-way street, this also means that those from the LGBT can have 'freedom from the religious' and are able to discriminate against christians based on their own personal beliefs - correct?

You mean land of the free only if you are a white male Christian. That's what happens when you vote in an idiot with a heap of advisors that are severe right wing male conservatives that expect the whole country should take a lesson from their outdated points of view.

The thing I find fascinating is many of these white power hungry religious zealots are usually also the same guys that have the 16 year old girl friend on the side or visit hookers on company time or like to cross dress and steal money from the less fortunate when no one is watching, yet they see fit to impose their views upon everyone else.
