I am finalizing my travel plans and I realized I have over an entire week open. I am free in Asheville (NC) on 12th of June and I need to be in Calgary on the 21st of June.

Any ideas or suggestions on what I can do in this mean time? I have some free time in Canada afterwards, so I was thinking of some travelling in the US, but there are soooo many options. Any favourite places or ideas?

Asheville is gorgeous! I was there a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it.

Do you like the beach, mountains, cities, wilderness....there''s a lot out here to choose from!

That is exactly the problem - way too many choices!

I like history, cultural sites, archeological sites, people watching. I like nature in moderate doses - a day or two of hiking, not a week of camping. I don''t like to laze around a pool or a beach, I prefer to see things and learn.

Asheville is fabulous. Make sure you have time to do the Biltmore. I love, love, love the Grand Bohemian Hotel if you don''t already have accomodations. Tupelo Honey is a great for lunch or dinner and the Early Girl Cafe is fabulous for breakfast or lunch.

Not too far from Asheville are the Smokey Mountains. Great driving and some beautiful scenic places.

The coast of North Carolina is wonderful- espcially in the Northern portions.

Not sure how much traveling around you want to do, but Washington DC has great museums, tours, etc.

What about historic Williamsburg (VA)?

If you go to the Biltmore estate in Asheville, there''s a winery you could tour. I haven''t done the tour but I''ve heard it''s fun. We went to Asheville at Christmas time and besides touring the mansion, we went to dinner at the Deer Park restaurant, which is right on the grounds. There was a fabulous buffet. I''d highly recommend it.

You are in an excellent geographic location to fill in your travel schedule!

You lucky duck!!!!!

You are going to meet so many interesting people to do things with if you are going to be there, I would think.
You do plan to post some photos for us, don''t you? Penland is amazing. (My stepfather is from Asheville.)

I have been dreaming of going to Penland for a long time. I originally wanted to do the full 2 months, but the timing wasn''t good and it was too expensive for my budget. I really want to meet all the great people, see everything possible and, of course, learn a lot.

I will certainly post pictures for you, but you may have to be a little patient.

You can get a great dose of CHEESY America and go to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg! They are a few hours away in Tennessee, but can provide some entertainment. I second going to Great Smokey Mountain National Park...it is beautiful. And there is a lot of Cherokee indian history in the area, look up the town of Cherokee and you can see some great historical stuff, and live indian reservations.

And I second Tupelo Honey!!!!!!! I''ve actually eaten there for dinner, and had amazing mahi mahi, goat cheese grits, and asparagus. I still think about the great food there!

Have a wonderful time...that''s a great area. And ill talk to DH''s friend...he lives just south of Asheville.
