Had my tonsils out yesterday morning, everything went fine. Had the same anesthesiologist as I did when I had my hernia fixed. That time, he had asked me about the bad experience I'd had when I was in high school and had my wisdom teeth cut out..as I was telling him I heard myself going lllmmmmhhhfff and had enough time to think ohhh he's sneaky and woke up in recovery. This time, the nurse was telling me to think good thoughts, and I said oh I will be, I'll be thinking of what JD's going to buy me. The anesthesiologist was behind me and while I was talking w/the nurse I thought ohh I feel tingly..he's back there being sneaky again...and then woke up in recovery. I did however have nice gemstone dreams and when JD and the kids came in to see me instead of complaining about how awful my throat felt, I told him about my jewelry dreams haha.

I was worried that no one would be helping me, and I was right, but if I do things after I take my Tylenol, it's manageable.

However, last night, we went to bed around 11:30. A little after 12, Trapper woke up crying and I thought ok, time to bring him in with us so I went in to get him. I noticed the corner of his mouth was dark, so I figured the scabs were coming off and they'd said there would be a little blood when it happened. When I reached for him, he was crying, and it started coming out of his mouth, so I hauled him into the bathroom and got JD up to help me. As we were washing his face, he started throwing up blood. I couldn't keep up with it. Kept flushing the toilet, rinsing out the rag, using toilet paper, he kept pouring out blood. I had JD call the ER in the town the Dr who did the surgery is out of to page Dr, and while he was on the phone w/the ER, I was in the bathroom with Trapper. I'd gotten him a glass of ice water since that was what the instruction sheet said to do first. He was sitting on the side of the tub, sipping, and I started to clean up the mess. He didn't cry thru any of it, was a little shaky but no crying. We managed to be calm and soothing, like it was no big deal, even tho it was scaring us. Suddenly, he stands up and my little almost 4 year old son projectile vomited so much blood and chunks of who knows what, that was the end of mommy being calm. I shrieked, JD came running and it was a mad dash up to our ER. Had to drag poor London out of bed..Trapper was so pale and trembling, she saw the blood all over the 3 of us and was instantly frozen.

Thankfully we live about 2 blocks from the hospital but I tell you, well below zero, no coats, iced over windshield and icy streets, it seemed to take forever. He vomited several more times in the ER but nothing like at the house. It seriously looked like a murder scene in there. We spent a little over an hour at the hospital. We were a little irritated that no one said there could be a possibility of that happening. They said "there could be a little blood" not "you might be bathing in it and you might wonder if your child will need a transfusion".

I called mom and she did come in and sit with us to help keep London soothed, and she came and helped JD clean up the bathroom afterward.

So..that was my surreal experience after having my tonsils out. 6 hours after they came out I was picking up the house, doing dishes, helping London finish her homework. 15 hours after they came out, up at the ER praying our little boy was going to be ok. He's been pretty good today. No whining or crying, playing like normal, tho still pale. Fingers crossed we're not going thru this again when London's and my scabs come off!!

I'm so sorry to hear about this Pakrat. I can only imagine what you and your husband were thinking and how scared your son was! What surgery did your son have done, in order to cause this?

Thanks Mer! The kids had their tonsils out last Wednesday. We'd been told to expect that when the scabs came off after 7-10 days it would be uncomfortable, possibly painful, and there could be a little blood..we figured no problem, when scabs come off there is usually a little bit of blood. We had no idea it could turn out that way and were not expecting it at all. Quite a shock, I'll say!

oh YUCK!! One of my sons has really chronic bloody noses and one time he swallowed a lot of blood and was puking huge long clots of it and omg I just gag thinking about it... truly scary moment, I feel for you, I can't imagine having it over and over again.

yukkayukka :P Hope you are all feeling better soon!

How awful! I'm glad T is doing better. He must have been miserable. JT vomited a tiny bit of blood when his scabs came off but not more than one wash cloth could take care of. I would have freaked at the projectile blood vomit. I hope L's and your scabs don't do that too!

OMG Packrat, I hope T's doing better. I can't imagine staying calm like that. You're amazing! And so is T for being so brave!

I hope everyone stays healthy and L's scabs are just minor.

That's scary. I'm glad your mom stepped up to the plate and came to help. I hope you and the kids have a quick and full recovery.

Thanks everyone! It really was such a frightening thing to see..It was this odd feeling, like you're watching a slasher movie or something, this couldn't possibly really be happening to my little boy. It was scary too that he didn't cry or get overly upset about it. He was just so pale and shaky and half asleep looking, that made me think there was more of a problem.

He slept pretty good last night and has been acting better, so I hope that was the last rough patch!

That sounds absolutely horrible. I had my wisdom teeth out and as soon as I got home I started throwing up blood. I thought it was terrible but it was only once. And it sounds SSSSOOOO insignificant compared to your poor son's experience. I cannot imagine.

That sounds terrible! Its so scary when something is happening with your kids. I can only imagine how you were feeling :errrr: .

Oh the poor little sausage, how terribly frightening for you all :(( We do alot of ENT at work and I recover lots of kids who've just had their tonsils out, and it's distressing enough for them and their parents when they vomit blood immediately post-op, let alone a week later! I hope all's well, and hope you're doing well too in your recovery!! Thinking of you all xxx

That sounds pretty frightening. One of my friends got his tonsils out during our first year of med school (we were classmates), and he nearly died of a bleeding complication. He had to go back into surgery. Goes to show you that even a simple/routine procedure like tonsillectomy isn't without risks.

ETA: DandiAndi, are you a PACU nurse? I don't know too many people who use the word "recover" in that context.

I got a real shock when I read this! I don t want to scare you (as its past now in any case), but it does nt sound like his scabs coming off.... It sounds like a hemorrhage. I was warned about this. The doctor said- any blood AT ALL and straight to the ER. Its super dangerous (like fatally dangerous). I am not a doctor, but it sounds like what I was warned about. I am so happy everything is OK now.
I am so sorry this happened to you. Also, sorry if I am freaking you out....

Been thinking about you and your kids- is all OK now? Healing finished?
Hope all is good!

Thanks Mousey, that's sweet.

It..blows. That's about the nicest way I can put it. I've never had to take tylenol/ibuprofen for this long, ever. Couple days when I had C-sections with the kids, couple days when I had my hernia fixed, couple days when I had my wisdom teeth cut out. It's been 9 days and it still hurts. The pain is just not manageable yet, tho I can talk better now. My voice still gives out and it makes the pain worse if I talk too much..which is sooo not easy when you have kids.

I force myself to eat and drink b/c my body needs it. Mom did come in one afternoon b/c I got so nauseated I almost passed out a few times. She wasn't happy about it but she came for a couple hours until the anti nausea cream the office called in for me started to work. Went to get checked out Monday, thought for sure I had bronchitis or pneumonia..coughing non stop for 3 days and boy oh boy did that hurt! Lungs clear, and the recommendation was SLEEP. Nobody to help w/the kids so..sorry about my luck.

Hopefully it starts getting better soon. I know it will be worth it if we're not getting sick all the time anymore.

The kids bounced back wonderfully. Trapper had his issue last week but after that, he's been fine. London we had a couple times where she was really in pain, and I could see the tears in her eyes and we had some snuggle time so she could cry w/out anyone seeing. She handles things the way mommy does. I'm glad theirs are out and they won't have to worry about it when they're older.

I am SO sorry about that Packrat. I know this sounds odd, but in a way I think they are paying you a compliment- they genuinely think you are such a strong person that they can t even fathom the idea that you need help! You are the strong Mom- thats how they see you.
You WILL be fine. Its hideous- I remember the pain. Just pure awful. But when it starts to clear, and you can eat again it will be the best feeling ever. Also, the relief of not getting sick 3 or 4 times a winter, and not feeling that familiar tonsillitis feeling will be SO worth it.
Sending good healing karma your way.

I was popping in hoping to see that you were all better. Sorry that you're still so sore. Don't you just wanna go back and smack the dr who said it's not that bad!? Obviously resting isn't really going to happen with the kids. Maybe a movie weekend? Or plan a sleepover at least for L this weekend?

Lots of healing dust for you *************************

Sorry jstarfire hon, I just spotted this! I do some PACU, but mostly scrub/scout and anaesthetics. Sorry, that (recover) probably sounded a tad odd :rodent:

Ah, I see! I'm an anesthesia resident, which is why I asked.

Packrat, I hope you're feeling a lot better by now! Tonsillectomies are especially hard on adults.

Yep, we're all doing well! My throat still feels weird and it hurts the back of my tongue when I try to drink a lot at once, so I just can sip. I had Dr. look at my throat when I was at work Wednesday and she said it looks good..just will take me longer to heal I guess. Glad it's over and done with and I never have to do it again!
