Hi gang of all knowing PSers. Late last week my 21 month old son came down with a weird rash. I searched all the rashes i could find on google and nothing seemed to fit the bill, but this morning my mom was over and she took one look at it and said "yeast". So until i can get in to see my Dr. (she's away till wednesday) i am wondering what i should do.

Here are the details
* rash is on the back of thighs, below the diaper line, worse on one leg
*but also a bit on his forearms and top of hands (nothing on torso or anywhere else)
*rash started out as small red, slightly raised dots and remained that way on arms but clustered and got inflamed into a larger patch of red dots on legs. It bled a teeny bit once when he scratched.
* seems to be itchy and worse after a bath but really not bothering him that much, (scratches when i remove clothing, but not much during the day) but he is a mellow kid, so he takes a lot to get him aggravated
* No other symptoms that would indicated measles etc. and not likely to be eczema as i suffer from this and know what it looks like
* he was swimming in a public pool last week, but does not look like hives etc.

So, i googled "yeast infection" and it does visually look the same, some sites said to get a topical cream that a woman would use. Should i try this now ? Any other suggestions? Brands? What causes it and should i be worried about a recurrence?

thanks everyone

i really hope u dont have a 21 yr old son that u''ve been hiding Jas!

im sorry im not much help here but hope one of the other PSers can come in with some good advice..we''ve got some really great Drs on here too..

Poor Co! T had a yeast infection a while back and her doctor said to keep it dry (he even suggested fewer baths) and to use an over the counter topical cream that a woman would use. Worked great but took a day or so to see any improvement.

haha MSB--i edited. I''d have bigger issues on my hands if my 21 year old was still in diapers, getting baths from mom eh?!

Burk--okay, the cream is what i''ll start with.

I also read that fruit is to be avoided for a few days to prevent growth. Read this after a weekend of being on the go and snacking on tons of fruit to make sure Co got some good stuff in him-thinking he was getting sick with something

figures.
Thanks for the input.

Sounds like my DD a few weeks ago, slightly raised bumps, but it wasn't Roseola, it was cocci--something can't remember the term, but it was viral and not much you can do unless yours is accompany with a fever (mine did not have a fever) but my Dr., just said for me to try to use cortizone over the counter for a bit, it may take five to seven days before it goes away slightly, sure enough it went away. It didn't bother my DD and she didn't scratch at the rashes, it only appeared on the exremities, hands, and feet and not in the diaper region as my Dr had suspected. She also gave me a blood order to check platelet, if DD had anymore blood blister like (she had a few spots on the ear) but it didn't spread- it quickly went away in about two days, so we didn't go in for any blood work.

Yup! monistat or something similar applied topically and keep the area clean and as dry as possible. It will resolve itself in a day or two.

hmmm....sounds interesting. it would be a kind of funny location for a yeast infection (usually they are seen in the skin folds or underneath the diaper where it is moist and wet). VERY rare to have it on the backs of the legs in a healthy kiddo like co (but not unheard of). my first thought in ANY kid is eczema (it can look so different on different people), and the location is better for that... there is certainly no harm in trying monistat or something like that. or just try hydrocortisone.... i''m not much help without seeing it...sorry!!

Jas, applying a topical antifungal won''t hurt, so I''d try that first. I''d also check inside his mouth and his feet to see if any of these spots have shown up there because it could be hand, foot and mouth (coxsackie virus). Since hand, foot and mouth is a virus, you really don''t have to do anything for treatment.

If he scratched some of the sores open, please do keep an eye on them because they could get infected with staph or strep. I learned this the hard way -- my younger daughter fell and scratched up her hand and ended up with blisters and peeling! It took a while to heal and she was on antibiotics, but it did eventually clear up.

Hope it goes away soon and doesn''t cause any problems for the little guy!

LIA-- i guess like you said, it could be eczema, but it came on suddenly in the same spots on both sides of his body (b/w knee and bum on legs and on forearms and top of hands on each arm). It looks very similar to a roseola rash, but i don''t think it is that because some areas are really inflamed, itchy and more clustered. Also he has no other symptom of roseola (no fever, etc.)
We put on some antifungal this aft and it actually looked better this evening, so hopefully it continues to work...

I agree with this! Oh and Aquaphor--it seems to solve most skin problems C''s had so far and I use it for myself sometimes too!

Hope he gets better soon--at least he doesn''t seem to be in pain or discomfort..let us know what the dr. says!

Aw, hope Co gets better soon Jas!

Haha...yep, J was a grease monkey for the most part of the first year.
I still applies on her thighs every now and then else she''ll get these little bumps on the side of her thighs and she''ll make it worse by scratching.
