Sour dough for me, please!

Sweet French bread?

Please inform this former pastry chef as to what you''re talking about. Just non-sourdough bread?

I don''t even care. I love all bread. I mean it. Bread is my favorite. My husband hates taking me out because I always fill up on bread because I love it so much. If I had to choose between those two I would choose sour dough.

I have been known to buy a loaf of fesh italian bread and eat the whole loaf in a day. mmmmm

mmmmm, ME too. I like either, as long as it was warm and soft inside and crusty outside.

I''m with Freke. What''s sweet French bread? If you mean just regular ol'' French bread, that''s what I like best. Especially if it''s warm.

Hmmm w/o going deep, it is possible to get sweet ie pain moulé made with sourdough

My guess DF is talking about enriched ''french shape'' made w/american wheat.
100% sourdough for me....yeah I''m biased

I''m from SF and I love sourdough but most of the country and world just doesn''t know how to do it correctly... some are better than others and some are downright disgusting. The wrong texture is usually the problem... it just isn''t supposed to be dense or doughy.

Hmmm . . . sweet French bread? . . . works for me.
Both.

lol, there is this white honey bread I love from the County Line but I only have it on special occasions. hehe

for those asking about sweet vs sour ... here in CA we have thick baguettes that are labeled sour and sweet but they are both listed as sourdough. the sweet is just not sour... it''s maybe ''regular''?

i am a fan of sweet toasted with butter. and cehra, people outside of SF have said the sourdough here is much diff and better, but i have never had it elsewhere so i don''t get the diff!?!

In other states you''d be surprised what goes for "sourdough" and often it''s more the texture inside of country white bread with an artificial sour taste. it''s truly revolting. Some are better than others but all of the best I''ve had are in SF or the bay area in general. I''ve found one brand here in Portland that is good enough to sit aside a SF loaf and a couple that are good enough to eat, but even here you have to be careful. Some are just too doughy - the texture is all wrong. When I lived in NY I couldn''t find one worth eating anywhere. Though I think if that''s all you know maybe that''s fine... maybe they come out to SF and think what is this weird sour french bread? lol

oh and I heard once it had to do with the bacteria in the air, the climate, the elevation for rising... etc. People who get a good... what is it called? fond? frond? I don''t remember - anyway when they get a good one they keep it under lock and key. Understanding how they make sourdough bread is a little creepy - along the lines of blue cheese lol

Cehra, yes the process is a little freaky. I am going to tackle ''breads'' this winter for fun an I don''t know what Greg will think about me growing my sponge on top of the fridge for like 3 weeks. Oh and then we have to let it live in the fridge after that. Sounds yummy.

I kind of like just buying bread.

I only know that supposedly SF sourdough tastes sooooo much better than everywhere else because Greg''s Mom raves about it when she comes to visit and we have to get her a loaf a day while she visits, which she consumes entirely. And then we send her home with 2 loaves, and I have her indefinitely signed up for the Boudin bread club. She''s in heaven.

I love making bread - but for me the bread machine is just - ew. I love the kneading of it - it doesn''t take long before you find a way you can do it that doesn''t feel like effort plus your hands get stronger... it''s such a relaxing rhythm. I think you''ll really enjoy it! Knead is a fun book :)

SWEET!

Sour for me too with butter!!! When I was young we used to have a deli around call Schirmers and they made sour Jewish Rye bread. My mom would buy a
loaf and sometimes that would be dinner. Big hunks of bread with butter.

My kids would all do that too! They are bread junkies so it must be genetic. I have never done the bread for dinner thing with them though!

both... I don''t discriminate!

I make bread at home all the time. Warm and soft with that crunchy outside. Butter. MMMMmmmmm.
Sometimes I''ll slice up some cheeses and we''ll have bread fresh out of the oven with slices of cheese for dinner. And a nice wine.

Can''t stand sour dough. It is awful. No amount of butter or anything else can make it into something I''d consider eating.

Of course I don''t live in CA and have never had sour dough from there. So maybe I''ve just never had a loaf done right.

well one basic thing you can note - is the texture like that of french bread or of sandwich bread? Because sourdough is supposed to be like french bread with a springy light texture... if it''s dense... ewwww I can still remember eating that dense white bread with the sour flavor it''s horrrrrrrrid.

I adore all bread, but if I had to choose it would be sour dough

sourdough please!With melted cheese...or butter
