Do you think a three stone makes a center diamond look smaller or bigger? Has anyone gone from a three stone to a solitaire?

I kinda think it makes the center stone look smaller. A solitaire setting seems to make a diamond pop, whereas a three stone creates more of a power bling look.

I''d rather have one big stone to dominate, than three stones working as a team. Plus, you can always add to the main stone, but when you''ve got three, not much else place to go with that design.

Yep! Exactly what I think.

I think a 3 stone will make the center diamond look smaller.

I agree, even with rather small sidestones relative to the centre the centre looks smaller to me.

I think it makes it look smaller in most cases. However, some people do prefer because it gives more finger coverage.

totally agree with MC!!! but both can be really pretty.

that said, I think three stones with gem stone centers often look bigger than gem stone solitares b/c the diamonds add sparkle.

I think it can depend on the size and shape of the sidestones. If you''re talking 3 of a kind, I do agree it takes the spotlight away from the center. If you go with different shapes, I think it can enhance the center stone.

I think thin sidestones, like baguettes or bullets, do not make the center look smaller. (Usually thin bands in general make the center pop).

If the sidestones are too large, it may make the center look smaller but it'll have super-bling.

However, I've also noticed that three-stones can be set higher than some solitaires... if you're thinking of resetting to a 3-stone and are worried about the perceived size of the center, then make sure all three are set a little higher. They'll all look bigger.

And what are you thinking of getting?

ditto lyra

but I would always put my intial money into the biggest and best centre stone I wanted - you can always turn it into a 3-stone later :)

I originally had a three stone ring. After a tradgedy which I can''t bring myself to post, I now have a 3 carat solitaire. It''s beatiful, but something about it just isn''t "me" . At first I thought it was because I was waffling between a princess and a round. Then I thought it just needs the shadow band, but now I think it''s because I miss my three stone ring. I keep looking at old photos of my ring and missing the amount of finger coverage. My old 3 stone had a 2.29 diamond and I''ve gained almost 1mm in size. It originally seemed over the top big to me, but now it''s "normal". I have been toying with the idea of getting a three stone again, but worry that I won''t like it... It''s nothing that would happen before Jan 2011, just something I was thinking about.

Would you be trading in your current ring for the three stone? Why are you worried you won''t like it? It seems that if you miss your old three stone, you might enjoy a new stone.

If you''re interested in mixing it up, you might try a three stone with sapphire or ruby sidestones.

I agree with Lyra.

I think both can be beautiful, but in three stones I prefer a ring with different shapes as the side stones.

Depends on the proportions of the ring.

What kind of three-stone did you used to have? (if you don''t mind talking about it). I think with your princess, you can add anything to its side and your center will definitely not look small.

I've been pondering the same issue as you, I've been wanting to put my 3ct in a three stone but in the end decided against it. I think the 3ct can stand by itself. However, if you have been missing the look of a 3-stone, then I say why not try it with yr 3ct? I don't *personally* think the 3ct will get lost in a 3-stone ring, I just don't think it needs to, but it'll definitely be very very blingy indeed.

Someone I know IRL has a 3-stone ring with a 2.75ct centre and 1.50ct each on the sides. It's one of the most breathtaking rings I've ever seen.

I dont think that it makes the center stone look smaller or larger. I think they give good finger covereage. I think solitaires look lovely on most people, but I am not one of them. I have large hands-Not like man hands, but I have long fingers and my ring finger is a 6.5 - 7. Solitaires seem to be lost on my hand. I have even tried larger solitiares and they still seem I guess the word is lonely on my hand.

I went from a solitaire to a 3-stone back to a solitaire. Having had different styles of settings I think my current setting (which is a half-bezel style) out of all that I''ve had, makes my center stone look the largest. I think a 3-stone setting gives more finger coverage and a "wall" of sparkle if you will. Whereas a solitaire gives off more of a targeted sparkle. Both can be gorgeous but it''s all about preference.

Smaller... absolutely.

ETA, I just took two pictures to show you what i mean, BRB

Just for you sizzle

The left side is a hair bindy. When I do this, I SWEAR the stone looks so much bigger as a "solitaire" than a 3 stone.

Wow, that''s a good comparison Swedish Bean!

Haha.. I probably do this to my ring at least once a week just to see how much bigger it looks without the side stones :D

swedish bean, your method is so much more effective than trying to tape bits of paper to the sidestones... thanks for the tip

I have a solitaire but I do the same thing to my ring when I''m bored at work! I think it makes my solitaire look bigger too though so think just the idea of bezeling the diamond makes it seem so much bigger.

Hi Sizzle....

I had a solitaire for 6 years and I absolutely loved it and never thought of changing it. Then I had baby boy #2 and to celebrate, we made my 3 carat rbc a 3 stone ring by adding .75 sidestones and then downsizing to .55. I love the meaning of the 3 stone, I guess I just fell for the DeBeers hype of Past, Present and Future. I have never thought about going back to a solitaire. I look at this ring everyday and it has such meaning to me, I fall in love with my little family all over again.

Go for it. If you don''t like it, you can always go back to a solitaire.

and THIS is why I LOVE this board!

Hi Sizzle, if you don''t mind me asking....was your previous three stone all princess cuts or were they all round brilliants? If switching back to a three stone will give you a good warm fuzzy feeling then I say go for it! But if it will bring back memories of what happened to your previous three stone, then I say enjoy that 3ct solitaire bad boy and maybe get a blingy eternity ring to go with it!!!!

Agreed. I prefer solitaires for this reason, not that I don''t appreciate a lovely three stone setting too
