i would appreciate advice on a gift basket for a 12 year old girl. she is newly diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. i was considering putting in some jelly bellies until i read a site that said to avoid sugar. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Maybe you should stay away from food completely due to the nausea from chemo? Maybe some small toys, games, tinted chapsticks (for dry lips,) things of that nature?

Tinted chapstick is a great idea.. also maybe DVDs, books, magazines..

house cat and dannielle, thanks for your suggestions!

I would certainly steer clear of food. She''s going to be spending a lot of time at doctor''s offices and in treatment rooms. Anything to keep her entertained during those hours I''m sure would be appreciated. Books, movies, magazines are all great suggestions. Maybe even a book store gift card if you''re not sure what kinds of things to get. Any kinds of hobby things she might be interested in that she can do while at those places. Chapstick is a great suggestion, or any number of those girly make-her-pretty sort of things. I''m a guy and have no daughters, so I''m of limited help for specifics!

These are a lot of things I''ve seen while working at an outpatient cancer center for about five years, and in a pediatric hospital for the last year or so.

To tell the truth though, just being around and supportive is easily the most valuable gift you can give her right now. Just let her know she''s in your thoughts all the time. Good luck!

Also, some nice body lotion, hand lotion, etc. When I was going through chemo, my skin was very dry.

Also, great advice about non food gifts. She may very well suffer from nausea. I know I did.

Magazines, DVD''s are great ideas. Maybe a gift certificate, where she could order a DVD that she doesn''t have?

I wish her all the best, the poor little sweetheart. Sending her many healing prayers and hugs.

blackwave and linda w, thanks for your help!

A coworkers daughter was diagnosed w/leukemia last fall, and we sent down a lot of the stuff mentioned above. We also added things for her parents to do to-magazines, crossword puzzle books, handheld games, and lots of change for vending machines.

thanks, packrat! your suggestions are appreciated. thanks to all who responded. i have just finished putting together a package for her. hopefully she will respond to the treatment and begin the road to recovery. it is a very serious diagnosis for such a young girl and all of your concerns and well wishes are deeply appreciated.

DITTO! The non food items are the best...nausea is awful! I''m a chemo patient myself and I''m about to get a cuddly pillow for when I have to go lay down with the nausea. I want to hug it and it will bring me comfort...my current pillow supports my CPAP machine.

Can she wear nail polish? Fun girly lip gloss, hand lotion, etc. will help with the dryness....as others have said.

I''ll keep her in my prayers, too!

Lori

Not to hijack, but I actually have a older relative (in her 60s) who is just about to start chem for breast cancer, and I would like to send her something to, but am somewhat at a loss. I'd appreciate any ideas! So far I'm thinking of getting her a body pillow, and maybe some moisturizing lotion (although I wish I knew what she liked! Anyone have any recommendations?), and some fuzzy comfy slippers. I thought about jewelry (of course) that involved the pink breast cancer ribbon, but wasn't sure if that was appropriate (too soon?).

Hope everything goes well for you Lori! the cat is adorable by the way! yours?

Hi MTG!

I''ll keep your relative in my prayers for comfort and healing! The things I appreciate the most are body lotions, but the non fragranced ones...I don''t want to smell pretty when I''m nauseated....I don''t want to smell anything at all, actually. The lip balms are great since my lips are eternally dry. The body pillow is wonderful! Books, dvds, magazines....things to occupy her time while receiving the chemo (if she''s able to tolerate these) or for when she is home and feels up to reading.

A care package of basics is great, too....chicken soup, saltine crackers, a special soup bowl, etc. works for me.

Thank you for the well wishes....I''m in the middle of my chemo infusions. Yes, the cat is mine. Her name is Coco and she''s our shelter cat that we adopted from the Houston SPCA on February 26, 2008. I was VERY sick at the time and was extremely depressed. Something told me to go to the SPCA and I got out of bed and went...there was Coco...it was love at first sight. She adopted ME! She has made me smile through the pain and has brought such joy to my life!
