Thinking of Letting Go of My Datejust 41 for a Daytona – Am I Crazy?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been going back and forth on this and wanted to get some outside perspective. I currently own a Rolex Datejust 41- the two-tone with the Wimbledon dial. It’s a stunning piece, versatile enough for everyday wear but still feels special on the wrist. Honestly, I get compliments on it all the time.

That said, I’ve had my eye on the Daytona for a while now, and I’m seriously considering selling the Datejust to make the jump. The problem is, part of me feels like I’d be insane to part ways with such a classic. The Wimbledon dial is only getting more attention, and I can see it becoming a future icon in its own right.

So I’m torn. Do I hold on to the Datejust and save up separately for the Daytona? Or make the move now and not look back? For those of you who’ve owned both - or gone through a similar trade-up decision I’d love to hear your advice.

Am I overthinking this, or does it make sense to keep what I have?

I wouldn’t call you insane at all. This is a dilemma a lot of collectors go through. The Datejust 41 with the Wimbledon dial is a fantastic reference and has been gaining traction in the secondary market, especially in two-tone. It’s versatile, timeless, and easily one of the most recognizable Rolex designs. If you let it go, chances are you’ll miss having that “do-it-all” piece in your collection.

On the other hand, the Daytona is in a league of its own. If you’ve always wanted one and can realistically make the move, I understand the temptation. Just keep in mind that the Daytona wears smaller than the DJ41, has a very different wrist presence, and isn’t as versatile if you’re thinking daily wear.

My advice: if you can swing it, keep the Datejust and add the Daytona later. If that’s not possible and the Daytona is your dream watch, then trading up isn’t crazy. Just be sure you won’t regret losing the Wimbledon. A lot of people who flip them end up trying to buy them back down the line, usually at a higher price.

New or pre loved Daytona Nigel?
Often the new costs less than some older collectables.
Why not save up and have both?
Work some extra shifts or do something your bosses love and get a pay rise?
