Just a small vent. Rose was wonderful at her first show, a little goofy but to be expected UNTIL it was time to go home. Opened the trailer up to load to go home at 3pm.... got Rose on the trailer at 7pm.

We were literally the last people at the show grounds and we had to call friends and we ended up PICKING her back end UP and placing her on the trailer. No fear from her, just down right dirty stubborn.

Hey does anyone have any good weight gain supplement recommendations? My oldest is having a hard time this year

Hi DF,

What do you have your old man on now? Do you know the fat, protein, fiber break up for it?. How much hay is he getting/access to good green grass?

ANNND have you had his teeth looked at recently? My TB mare is a hard keeper (Older Mare 17 years old) in addition to senior feed (high fat and protein feed) so its easier for her to digest, her teeth need to be done more than normal, like x2 a year. She has a weird bite that has worsened as she has aged that my vet said was fairly common in older horses. Also the older ones are prone to wave mouth... basically more food falls out then stays in during the chewing motion and they get sore chewing for hours at every meal and don''t eat it all...

There is a supplement pak from smart pak that I think Irish recommended a few pages back in this tread she had gotten for Red (I think) and it has helped keep the weight on my mare... its like 50-60 bucks a month which isn''t too bad.

Once you figure out the feed there are a few other ''old timer'' tricks my FIL uses for his barrel horses to keep them fat and slick

DF, Red is on SmartFlex Senior and SmartCalm Ultra, both by SmartPak. I think my SmartPak bill is about $61 per month. The SmartFlex Senior really helps keep the weight on him, and it''s a great supplement for him because it deals with all of his senior horse issues as well. In fact, he''s on the SmartCalm Ultra because most horses who start the SmartFlex Senior find that it works almost TOO well and you suddenly have a colt on your hands! LOL!

Also, when I first got him, he was VERY thin and I needed to put a lot of weight on him. At that time, I was giving him "Mid-Atlantic" by Blue Seal. Many feed stores don''t carry this, but if you specially request it they should be able to get it for you. It did a WONDERFUL job of putting weight on him without making him hot. Oh yeah she''s a total summer lush now ... doesn''t hurt she has been at my parents farm that is what I equate to "granny''s house for the summer" she is getting more treats and turn out then she knows what to do with, HUGE grass belly. But with what she has been through she deserves every moment of being a happy safe gluten

And thx again for the recomendation... the smartflex has helped A LOT!

DF, please keep us in the loop. I find that Blue Seal typically has the highest fat content pelleted with out any sweat feed in it. My mare is on pellets only as any sweet feed makes her H_O_T!!!! (no to mention it isn''t particularly good for them)

oh and DF, a cheapy way to go to add some weight on is corn oil and beet pulp.

Just make sure to soak the beet pulp before you feed it.

I usually give a cup- 2 cups in the winter over feed because it helps with insuring they get enough h2o in their system when they typically don''t like to drink freeeeeezing cold water. I just take a cup dry, put in bucket with 1-2 cup water and let it soak, add on top of grain like a mash and the horses love it. It is GREAT and easy way to insure weight is kept on your horses. Esp if you guys are in FLA where it is super hot... insure that they stay hydrated. the corn oil makes their coat super slick too

I thought I'd share, my youngest figured out how to shake pears out of the pear tree. He has now emptied all of the lower branches and the horses have had a slurpy crunchy pear feast.

So much for preserves.

Autumn - I missed your post. Blue eyes are gorgeous on horses. Unfortunately they are harder of seeing though. I ride a mare who is pure white with blue eyes.

Hi all,
We boarded a Champage horse with green eyes for about 2 years... as he matured they turn to a beautiful hazel, his skin also changed to a purplish shade, gorgeous!

We have one now with amber eyes. He's a rocky mountain/qh. Looking in his eyes is SO STRANGE, esp b/c he is just so smart!


Generally horses have blue eyes when they carry a white skin gene. Cremello, "white", paints and appaloosas are the most common carriers of blue eyes. GENERALLY the skin around the eye is blue. I have seen exceptions to this though. My neighbor had a paint with a solid face (safe for a stripe) but two blue eyes. His white paint markings were white/pink skin. Hope that's informative (or at least somewhat interesting.

I've personally never owned one. But the mare I ride is beautiful.

My Paint has one blue eye, it is really quite beautiful.

Speaking of the paint. The old boy is lame as of Sunday. Not sure what he's done but it had a little heat and some swelling in the fetlock area down to the coronet band. I hosed it for about 20 minutes and Monday he seems a little less lame (he's not hopping lame).

I am so ready for fall, it has been TOO hot here to ride!
