A Canadian casino mogul and his actress wife were accused of posing as motel workers in order to receive COVID-19 vaccines meant for Indigenous residents of a remote Yukon community.

Rodney Baker, 55, and his 32-year-old wife, Ekaterina Baker, allegedly chartered a private plane to Beaver Creek on Jan. 21 to get doses of the Moderna shot, the CBC reported.

“Effectively what they did was they put our community and our isolation team at risk,” Yukon Community Services Minister John Streicker told the outlet Monday.

“I’m pretty angry at the whole thing.”

Staff at a mobile clinic had been administering the vaccine to the about 100 residents of Beaver Creek, most of whom are members of the White River First Nation.

The wealthy couple allegedly lied to workers at the clinic about where they lived and worked, according to the Yukon News.

But the pair raised suspicions when they asked for a ride to the airport after receiving their shots, Streicker said.

Clinic staff alerted the authorities after the motel confirmed that the Bakers weren’t actually new employees.

Officers first looked for the couple at a location in nearby Whitehorse where they were supposed to quarantine — and eventually found them at the airport, preparing to fly back to Vancouver, the reports said.

“We just didn’t anticipate that anyone would go to this length to effectively deceive the team to get vaccinated, and I think we all felt pretty offended at the whole thing,” Streicker told the CBC.

The Bakers were hit with two charges each under Yukon’s Civil Emergency Measures Act, one for failing to self-isolate and the other for failing to follow a travel declaration.

The maximum penalty they each face is a fine of up to $1,150 and/or up to six months in jail.

Rodney Baker, who reportedly made $10.6 million in 2019 as CEO of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, resigned on Sunday.

The company, which owns several casinos across Canada, has been embroiled in a probe looking into allegations of corruption and money-laundering since last year.

The mogul married Ekaterina, a Russian-born actress, in 2017, according to the reports.

The White River First Nation condemned the couple’s actions in a statement on Saturdayand called for the pair to face harsher penalties.

“We are deeply concerned by the actions of individuals who put our elders and vulnerable people at risk to jump the line for selfish purposes,” Chief Angela Demit said in a statement.

The community, she said, was selected to receive the vaccines “given our remoteness, elderly and high-risk population, as well as limited access to health care.”

“While we understand many want to have a vaccination immediately, it is not appropriate to skirt the rules put in place and approach our community in this way.”

Absolutely disgusting people. And with wealth like theirs, a small financial penalty like that is no deterrent at all. Hopefully the prison time is applied, and their wealth can't buy their freedom. :angryfire:

They sound like a lovely couple :x2. The penalties should be much higher.

Not sure how they thought a young Russian woman would pass for a First Nation citizen, either??

If it’s pay a fine or go to jail, then it’s only a crime if you’re poor I guess. Hate it. I think fines should be percentage of salary.

In the absence of any actual jail time for this couple, I hope they’re at least publicly shamed and wherever they go and introduce themselves people go “oh you’re the couple that stole vaccine from the indigenous elderly”.

WTH is wrong with people?!

Given they aren’t in a high risk category even if they did get Covid they are almost certain to be utterly fine.

Absolutely mental.

Precisely. We have lots of friends in the Yukon, and this just stinks. They've been so careful with keeping COVID out.

Last year, other wackos from the east coast travelled to the far-far north to one of the most remote places (Old Crow, YT) to "get away from and wait out" COVID. Fortunately, the town governance sent them packing right back to wherever they were from, immediately.

And yeah, that kind of fine is absolutely nothing to people like this. Jail time would never fly, here. I like the idea of a fine commensurate to one's overall financial worth. That might get their attention. Social peer pressure may also work well. People can be such selfish IDIOTS!

I did see another article that stated that these two twits will have to wait their turn for the second shot, which will be months and months away, and a very long time after their first shots. Pox.

Honestly if they had a mental illness I would feel compassion towards them. No, they knew exactly what they were doing and didn't give an F about anyone else but themselves. Jail time should be mandatory for these two. And a huge fine. And making reparations to the people they harmed.

I read that in the Times in UK a couple of days ago, and thought they were very selfish. :x2

However, it would not surprise me that are plenty more people like them about. :roll2:

Currently, in UK, the roll out of vaccination is managed by the NHS, and stocks for all the approved vaccines are only available from them, with no option to purchase for use on private non-NHS patients.

That's my understanding.

There were reports of private doctors advising their non-NHS clients to register for NHS if they are eligible to do so, in order to receive the vaccine while being stuck in UK unable to travel back to their home country etc...

DK :))

@missy The more I see these stories, the more enraged I get.

I have mentioned on here before that my husband is FDNY. They had a call yesterday morning for cardiac arrest, and when they get to the address, it's a studio apartment where the man in arrest, his wife, and their 11 year old daughter live. The firefighters start performing CPR as they wait for the medics to show up. The wife and daughter are screaming and crying, of course. The man was Covid positive, and most likely arresting for that reason. 38 years old. They performed CPR for 45 minutes. The daughter watched her father die. Turns out the man had had a kidney transplant in the summer, making him high risk as he was immunosuppressed.

We also lost another legend in the Chinese-American community this week to Covid. https://www.cnn.com/style/article/corky-lee-photographer-obit-intl-hnk/index.html
Corky was very active in documenting life in NYC's Chinatown, and preserving the history of Asian Americans in the US. He was a big, creative, energetic personality, and will be greatly missed.

THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD BE GETTING VACCINATED RIGHT NOW!!!

What a tragedy :(
And I completely agree. These are the people who should have been vaccinated already!

Thank you and your DH. He’s a real hero, as is your family. ❤️

Oh they're being shamed alright! Second page of local newspapers and in international news. He lost his job, or that's what we're being told. Dufus.
Monied entitlement as its finest. Can only imagine the cue jumping going on in the world beyond this public one.

Yeah a cynical part of me thinks money will find a way anyways, so maybe we should just put aside 5000 doses and sell them for $50k a dose and donate the money towards covid relief or some other related charity. At least then we raise money for charity and then butt brains won’t travel to try to sneak them. Pretty sure millionaires wouldn’t blink to pay 100k to be vaccinated and brag about it.

Let’s just see what happens. I have a feeling he and his girlfriend/wife will end up getting the second dose within the appropriate time frame. They should be in jail.

I’d like to see Hollywood and rich politicians and powerful people put their money to this good cause in getting everyone vaccinated. They all talk a good game. Actions speak louder than words.

Bill and Melinda Gates committed 70 million dollars towards fighting covid and ended up being centered in conspiracy theories about how they’re putting microchips in vaccines. What in the world... It probably says something that some people don’t think actions can just be kind and philanthropic, they must be motivated by something nefarious.

I think covid has overall increased my cynicism.

Yeah. It’s sad. People (in general) suck. :(
And no good deed goes unpunished. :((

But the true good doers don’t care about their public image and they do the right thing even when no one is watching/paying attention.

Early on in my area only health care workers could get it. I asked if I could give mine to my 91.5 year old grandma. Nope.

Now there is a long queue, but she has since tested positive. Thankfully only a runny nose and no other symptoms for 10 days. She wouldn't have even gone to get tested but my uncle insisted because she was exposed. This is the craziest virus, for sure.

There was a case here of a 46 year old man who refused to believe Covid was real, wouldn’t wear a mask, wouldn’t social distance, and yep, he got Covid and died this week. Apparently his friends kept showing him scientific evidence that this isn’t a government conspiracy to control him.
