Hiya Josh

I just realized you could prolly answer a question for me, since I feel foolish asking the GIA.

Hey Win..All the info you need is at the link below...

www.gia.org/education/271/gia_distance_education__graduate_colored_stones_diploma.cfm

Is the colored stone course just one course or a series? I noted it said something about the long distance course being $300. but I wasn't sure if that was just one portion of the 'colored stone' area of study or not.

I am currently finishing up the Colored Stones Essentials Portion of the course...

Win The course for your graduate in Colored Stones Diploma is actually comprised of 5 parts. 2 of those 5 being extension classes where you will have to travel to a location where GIA is hosting the extension class....they have a schedule on their site...

Another Note: If you are going to pursue these courses you will have to have access to some gemological equipment...A good site to look at for materals is www.Kassoy.com

Just wanted to say thank you for that excellent explanation!

Josh, it's great to hear all about you. Thanks for bringing Alaska to Pricescope. I am simply in awe of the breathtaking photos. It is a dream of mine to someday visit the wilderness of Alaska, and maybe even do a little salmon fishing.

//I'm still trying top get my hands on a scanner..Promise Pic's soon

Well you might either have been military, private contractor (Constuction), or a teacher?

Out of all the places I have traveled, I would like to back to visit Adak, Alaska...//

Josh-
Good guess, but, actually I'm a diabetes doctor. It turns out that American Indians have the highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the world. The Alaskan Natives, however, had an enigmaticly low rate of diabetes (lower than the US National average) - our effort was to document this, and attempt to explain why people were or were not developing diabetes.

Closer to the topic of jewelry, I did acquire amazing pieces from the villagers- mostly the bracelets/earrings from carved fossilized mammoth ivory...but also some amazing Athabaskan beaded earrings.

I'm sure you've considered the fact that there were no natural sugars in the USA (contiguous states), other than maple syrup/sugar until the arrival of the European permanent settlements.

Amerinds seem to display a serious sugar allergy, which triggers incipent type 2 diabetes.

As far as why Alaska natives haven't shown this problem I can only hazard a guess...could it be the high concentration of fish/wild game protein in their diet? Actually this would almost support Atkins contention that its a combination of carbs and protein in diet that make folks more prone to diabetes or make them fat. I've noted I feel better when I keep my diet to mostly protein, with a minimum of carbs.

Winyan:
You're right about the rarity of diabetes pre-Westernization of Native Americans. However, it is less likely due to the absence of sugar previously, are more likely due to an overabundance of food today (read - obesity). The protein diet is not necessarily good, but fish oils likely are. We are what we eat by definition, and there is a theory that the parts of us that must be made from fats, if made from fish oils, rather than saturated fats, work better.
But, I don't want to get too tangential when we should be discussing Josh's life!

Funny thing about life handing down miracles...Our daughter April is older than Regina's little sister which is 7...

Regina just hit 30 and her parents had Jenna unexpectedly when they were close to 50...

They are both real sweethearts and are sitting in the cockpit of a 737-200 on the way to Disneyland last year...

Hi Josh...

Looking at the lovely pics of Regina and April, I would think Regina is partly or mostly Aleut?...She has the delicate facial features.

Josh, I am delighted to finally put a face to the name. Please forgive me if you have posted your picture anywhere else here and I have missed it.

You and Regina are a beautiful couple. She is gorgeous and looks full of life. How fortunate you both are to have found each other. And the girls are darling. I know several families who have age relations such as April and Jenna Lynn.

Nothing like a little late surprise in life. They usually turn out the biggest blessings of all.

Thank you for sharing your photos. Do keep them coming.

On another note, since you are the colored gemstone nut, I am contemplating putting a ring together using diamonds and something pink (sapphires or tourmalines), or even teal colored (I saw some fabulous emeralds yesterday). I will be contacting you to pick your brain if that is OK with you.

Wow, the pictures are amazing. It's my dream to visit Alaska and see the Northern Lights. I think that I'll save that trip until I have chilren and until they reach an age where they can appreciate it. It just feels like an experience that would be great to share as a family. Beautiful!

Josh, you will need to run a Pricescope/Alaskan tour for PCQ, Sumi and myself.
