Well, my brother called me today and we had a good talk. He told me he saw the pictures of my MOH and BM dresses I sent him and they were now feeling guilty. And it turns out it''s (as it often is) nothing more than a communication problem. I thought I was being clear when I said it was a "very simple" wedding, and I thought the fact that it''s a morning wedding spoke for itself. However, I suspect my brother and his FI are not familiar at all with formal etiquette when it comes to weddings, and they didn''t have the same perception of a "simple morning wedding" as us etiquette-savvy PSers do. I went shopping down "bridal alley" in Montréal today and I definitely understand where their skewed perception comes from. You ladies would not believe the frilly dresses in there... Compared to those dresses, my BM dresses are not "simple", they are downright "plain", and the “Christmas ornament dress” is, believe it or not, relatively “simple”.
So my brother said his FI was ready to find another dress if I thought the gold dress was too much. Because of his skewed perception (caused by bridal alley’s frilly dresses), he was having a hard time figuring out what kind of dress would be more appropriate, and I ended up showing him a picture of my wedding dress. He was stunned! He said it’s gorgeous, but he didn’t know wedding dresses that simple even existed! He finally understood that what his FI needs is a summer dress. It can be a long dress if she wants it to be, but a summer day dress that she can wear again and that will be definitely easier to find than a plainer evening dress.
I was thrilled that we finally understood each other, but I felt a bit bad about her spending money on a dress she won’t wear (even if it’s not my taste), but my brother assured me that as he is a Naval officer, they will have very formal occasions to attend where she will be able to wear the dress. Apparently, she says that her wedding dress is so big that she’s thinking about changing for the reception (that kind of boggles my brother’s mind – and mine), so she might even wear the gold dress then.
And finally, I lucked out big time on my stroll down “bridal alley”… I found a discontinued sample of a 300$ Bari Jay evening dress in chocolate brown – for 89$!! It’s beautiful, in my size, and definitely won’t upstage her prom-like apple green BM dresses. Pictures to follow!
So all’s well that ends well! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU everyone for helping me get through the breakdown I had last night. I owe you all a lot, you are an amazing support group. I don’t know any other brides-to-be in RL except for my brother’s FI and we’re not really close (she’s an ok girl, we just have nothing in common), so it’s great to have a sounding board of people who know what I’m going through.
