lobster in maine... yum!!!

I LOVE that show too! And I had the same issues thinking about it - it''s not fair though, they get a category. One I saw this week was something like "Salty Delights" - that way each episode they can have a different favorite. haha.

I had some of the best food in the Cayman Islands, one was an italian meal and one was ahi tuna. Probably some of the best I''ve had so far.

Oh, and the bread pudding from St. Elmos in Indy. Probably one of my favorite desserts of all time.

LOL cammy yeah the category narrows it down big time, but i like the DIFFICULT nature of pinpointing one thing!! it really makes you think about what you tend to eat/consume, where you have traveled, what tickles your fancy.

i am spoiled by where we live, we have a lot of really amazing types of food here. so when we have traveled to certain places, i am not always impressed by foods elsewhere, even if supposed to be exceptional.

circe, i will have to look up and see if i can find that place in SF and try it next time!

greg said one other thing that has stuck with him for the last few years is this amazing roasted foie gras he had at a local restaurant. it''s since gone out of business, such a pity since the food was great, but it was v. expensive and the economy just couldn''t sustain it.

Hard to pick just one!

When were were in north tahoe for our honeymoon, they had this very small sushi joint that did all you can eat sushi on week nights..... THAT was the best thing I ever ate. I really really want to go back. ;-)

Also....

A ravioli dish with some kind of cream sauce that I had in a little cafe that over looked Notre Dame.

AND a dish my DH makes that is a soy sauce and mustard chicken! mmmmm......

ONE is impossible!

When I first read the question my mind jumped to some of the amazing meals we had in France or Italy, but I''d be lying if I said that anything there beat the truffled tater tots served at Grill 23 right here in Boston. I don''t know why I love them so much, but I could eat them all day, every day and never get tired of them.

I went to a new year''s celebration at my college roommate''s parent''s house. They are Indian and there was this appetizer of chick peas, cilantro, mint, garbanzo - oh gosh I don''t even remember and you scooped it with these pointed bread things. I could have eaten the entire bowl. Have no clue what it was.

Second would be this pumpkin, squash, white pepper, curry soup that my brother''s friend, a hotel chef, made for Thanksgiving. I didn''t have a square inch left in my stomach and yet I ate more of that soup.

Last, to cover all the food groups, my Dad''s homemade turtle cheesecake. He''s a cheesecake master of all flavors.

Absolute best thing I have ever eaten was in a tiny 12th century hamlet in Tuscany called Castello di Gargonza. OMG, best balsamic glazed duck breast on EARTH! Ever!!!! It was perfectly medium rare, and try as I might, I just can not recreate that perfectly crispy skin with that gorgeous balsamic glaze. God, I get goosebumps thinking about it. W and I adored it so much we went back to the same restaurant the next night and ordered the same exact thing.

Starset that sounds like hummus...it's very tasty, there are a lot of recipes online and you can get it at TJ's or WF's also. I *love* TJ's spicy red pepper hummus. The pointed bread things are typically a type of Pita..also avail at the stores!

Oh and Heather, thanks for the well wishes!! XO.

Hmmm ... I have a lot of favorites, but I think it may be scallops. I can think of maybe two restaurants where I have had the best scallops ever - one was a restaurant in Martha's Vineyard and the other was Redd in Yountville, CA. You just can't beat perfectly cooked scallops and I really remember the meals where I had amazing scallops.

eta: I just thought of something else. In Portugal, in a town outsdie of Lisbon called Cascais, there is a little sandwich shop where they serve grilled type sandwiches. My mom and I went there at least 3 times a week for a month to get their sandwiches - my favorite was one with tomato sauce, chicken, and cheese. It totally sounds like a standard chicken parm type sandwich, but there was something magical about it
18.gif
Never had anything quite like it since. I think their fresh bread was the main selling point.

A few years ago my friend''s grandmother came to visit from Japan and I was asked to come over for dinner. Her grandmother made sushi, maki and nigiri, but made her own spicy mustard from scratch. It was the most amazing sushi meal I''ve ever had.

Someone else I went to Johnson&Wales with (she was culinary) made this dark chocolate torte/fudge/brownie thing and one bite of it was like having you-know-what. I don''t even remember what she called it but no other chocolate dessert I''ve had comes close.

I have had many many many great dishes, but the first thing that sprang to mind was...

...a turkey sandwich.

But it wasn't JUST a turkey sandwich. It was October 2003 and my parents and I had just toured the grounds of The Culinary Institute of America. October in NY on the Hudson can be really really cold, and this one was. So we had wandered around the campus, this mecca of food where celebrity chefs are common sighting and often even instructors, and we had seen what we needed to see. But we were hungry and didn't make reservations at any of the restaurants.

So we went to the Apple Pie Bakery Cafe, which is NOT staffed by professionals, and not by aspiring chefs, but by aspiring pastry chefs. The sandwich was thinly sliced roasted local Hudson Valley turkey (not the processed stuff that comes in a big log), with smoked applewood bacon (also local), heirloom tomatoes (also local), freshly made herbed mayonnaise, on a freshly made sliced wheat bread with pumpkin seeds. At The CIA, you aren't going to get Ruffles potato chips as a side. The side that came with the turkey soup was the most incredibly velvety fresh (and again, local) cream of mushroom soup. That stuff that comes in a can might as well be inedible pig slop compared the absolutely exquisite creation that was that soup. The simplicity of the ingredients and the preparation and the perfect meld of ingredients put me into a trance, and all I remember of that meal was taking each bite and savoring it...
Thanks to your post I will have to give the apple pie bakery another try. Compared to their restaurants I always found it just ehh, but next time I'm in the area for sure I'll be there! Sounds delicious

ETA: Oops never answered! The first thing I thought of was this amazing steak and risotto I had in Rio last year, I'm not a huge meat eater but it was to die for. Other favorites include the tomato and egg dish we would often have when I was in China, it was just egg and tomato but it was so delicious, I would get so disappointed if it wasn't at dinner that night. I also loved this thin egg rollup they had on the street in China if I remember correctly it cost about 10 cents.

ETA again: I also have to add the butternut squash soup at our wedding and the cranberry creme brulee, they were beyond amazing!

The one best thing I ever ate had to be my first plate of bananas foster ever

I know what hummus is, but this was defintely was more of a cold salad of beans, stewed tomatos and quartered potatos. And the points were more like Irish soda bread, but maybe it was just a better tasting pita then I''m used to.

Truffle ravioli at this place called osteria de giovanni in florence!

I don''t think there is a bad meal to be had in Florence. Such wonderful food!
Ditto!

Over the years I''ve had lots of yummy meals, some in very nice and often not so fancy restaurants around the world and in my own backyard.

DH and I had an incredible meal in a London Indian restaurant about 20 yrs. ago. So much time has passed, but I can still
remember the explosion of flavors, colors and tastes. The restaurant was a bit of a dive, but the food immediately took
your mind off your surroundings.

That little ice cream place in Paris - forgot the name. The raspberry ice cream - intense, I''ll never forget it.

Mahi Mahi prepared like I''d never had before at Nick''s in Maui - devine stuff - melted in my mouth.

But - my favorite restaurant is Mark''s in Houston. Every meal I''ve ever had there tops the one before. Pure perfection.

(the best crab cakes in Houston are at Vic and Anthony''s ;-)

I've experienced mucho dining pleasure, but I have to say hands down the Best. Thing. Ever. was a very undignified Taco Bell burrito supreme the day I got out of the hospital due to having mono and strep when I was 14. I'd been on a jello diet for two entire weeks and was starving. My only request was that stupid TB burrito but MY GOD was it good. Most memorable food experience ever, not kidding. Hey, I have simple tastes.

Chocolate Souffle at Craft Steak in LV.

I about died.

that''s a really hard question but I think it would be grilled cheese made with old cheddar and homemade bread that I eat waayy too often when I can''t think of anything else to have for supper

I'll name a few.

Kerutuk with tofu at Bentara in New Haven. It is my favorite dish ever.

Tofu Rancheros at Claires in New Haven. Sooooo good.

Super-thin-slightly-blackened crust pizza at Sally's in New Haven. I had it once with an olive-oiled crust, paper thin sliced potatoes, a bit of rosemary, maybe some parm. Simple, yet perfect.

Blitva. A Croatian side dish of swiss chard, garlic, delicious sunny Croatian olive oil and potatoes. We try to make it at home, but it is never as good.

Gosh, I don''t know the answer to that!

I like that show, but I take it with a grain of salt. FN has several series of shows that are essentially advertisements for mail order food companies and restaurants (Diner''s Drive-In''s and Dives, How''d that get on my plate, etc), and I think this is another version of that. There''s no way Giada is going to eat a taco off a roach coach in middle of nowhere idaho.

LOL DH just had dinner at Grill 23 last night and woke me up in the middle of the night to rave about his meal! He said it was one of the best steaks he''s ever had. Those truffled tater tots sound heavenly!

Mmm, but the fondue from Artisanal and the Sweet & Salty Brownie from Baked that were both featured on that show (Cheesy and Salty episodes, respectively) are both amaaaazing.

While there are many tasty things I love to eat, and a number of 'favorite' restaurants, the best thing I ever ate was in New Orleans.

At Bella Luna, I made a meal out of two appetizer's: crab cakes and a wild mushroom fettucine topped with fresh (shaved at my table) truffles. OMG!! Now I know why gourmands everywhere rave about truffles! In a world where most dishes are over spiced and over salted, this pasta was sublime in its delicate just-right flavorings. It was already scrumptious, and then they added fresh truffles and tossed . . . heaven on a plate.

Hah! I see truffles made quite a few posters best meals! They really are that good.

The best meal I've ever eaten, we ate so many things I can't remember anything specific! Other than pork where it was a little bit of pork, some fat, and then the fat was crispy and crunchy on top. OMG so good. It was a new Asian fusion restaurant in Thailand, with 9 kitchens or something ridiculous like that, and everything we ate melted in our mouth and just kind of exploded with really unexpected flavours. Mmmmmm.......

OMG this made my mouth water....

This is such a tough question to answer!

I have a few:

1) This amazing lamb we had at a restaurant in Queenstown, NZ
2) Super super fresh sashimi in Tokyo
3) The best Spicy Tuna Crunch roll EVER - Toro Sushi in Chicago
4) And, in NYC''s Chinatown, hot pot at Grand Sichuan. Amazing.

Very recently, something I still taste when thinking about it...baked eggs with foie gras I had in a restaurant by the Eiffel Tower! *drool*

The first thing I thought of was chocolate lava cake. YUM!

I also LOVE baked brie with French bread. I''ve had it several ways, but I especially love it in a puffed pastry (en croute) or baked with brown sugar and walnuts on top.

I can''t decide what the third thing would be. It might be my favorite chicken dish that my mom makes.

You should be a food critique... This description has my mouth watering.... YUMMMMM.
