Terrorist attack in St. Petersburg, Russia

Thank you for posting this, ruby. I had planned to do so, but I was out for much of the day. It is a great tragedy.

Deb

This is terrible.

At first, Russian police published the photo of the "person of interest", looking Muslim. But now they said that he has been cleared and now they suspect a young Central Asian man. It was not a suicide bomber which rules out ISIL, it seems. There were three explosive devices planted, all seem to have been assembled in great haste and by people not well aware of the technology.

It happens when Putin is visiting St. Petersburg and during the week of intense demonstrations of young people against corruption in Russia. (And now, truck drivers have been on strike). So the situation is not calm.

RIP to everyone killed, 14 people so far is the count, and there is a 12-year old girl among them.

Arkteia, are you the poster who was known as Arkie1?

No we are two different people. And I am saddened to hear about this as well....

Arkteia used to post under a different name, however. I was going to tell you about her, but then I realized that perhaps she did not want her history known under her new screen name.

Arkteia, suffice it to say that I remember you and your accomplishments well. (She speaks Russian, ruby.)

I was not trying to be nosy. But after last week, I am a bit careful when I respond to new screen names until I can learn a bit more about them.

Ruby, I was posting here since 2009 or 2010, it seems. Interested in everything colored, not in white diamonds. I did change my name (did not like my old one) and may change again (nothing to do with this forum, though). I am ethnically Russian and interested in Russian history, as well as world one. Keep tons of history books at my bedside. History repeats with periodicity.

It is a pleasure to meet you.

My grandparents emigrated from Kiev, Russia.

Update (from "The New York Times"):

"ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — A man from Kyrgyzstan who had a Russian passport was responsible for the deadly subway blast in St. Petersburg, Russian and Kyrgyz authorities said on Tuesday, as the toll from the attack rose to 14 dead and more than 60 injured.

The Investigative Committee of Russia, the main federal law enforcement agency, identified the bomber as Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, 22. Kyrgyz officials said he was a member of the Uzbek minority in the southern city of Osh who received Russian citizenship in 2011 through his father. He moved to St. Petersburg around that time.

Russian forensic experts found his DNA on a bag left at the Vosstaniya Square subway station, the statement said. A more powerful bomb was discovered there and defused, soon after the explosion on Monday afternoon, on a train that had just departed another station, Sennaya Square.

The DNA evidence, as well as closed circuit television footage, led investigators to believe that Mr. Dzhalilov had blown himself up and had wanted to bomb the Vosstaniya Square station, the statement said."

Edited to add: Arkteia's link contained most of this information. I hadn't read it when I posted this. The only difference, I believe, is that this article postulates that the bomber died in the explosion.

My father's sister lived in Kiev for many years, it is a lovely place. :)

Let us wait till we get more info about him.
Unusual place, Central Asia. While it has become more Islamized after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it is still far from the fundamentalist place.

Incidentally, do you know what is the max size of pictires on the new-format forum? I did not find it anywhere.

Nice! Thank you! I think the forum automatically resizes pics for you when uploading. I never resize them beforehand.
