Tell me about your neighours, PS!

My neighbours are pretty cool for the most part. . .

Next door is a couple in their early 30s who just got married 2 years ago, and got pregnant right away. Very cool people, she's a financial consultant and he's in technology. They just gave us their grill when they bought a huge 4 burner. They have a new Passat and an X5, so we talk about VWs a bit. They actually met our neighbours across the street at the nearest VW dealership, and they told them about the house being for sale since the original buyer fell through.

On the other side of me is an early 50s single woman who is just the sweetest woman. Has a Yorkie, and she just lost her Cairn Terrier to cancer. She loves to cook so I bring her fresh herbs from our garden every so often. She watches our cats when we're out of town.

Across from her is another couple in their very early 30s. She's in fashion design, he works for Cisco, and they are originally from the Bay Area. They were shocked when they found out how much house they could buy in Dallas for not much money. He has an A3 S Line, and she has a Passat, and we have a GTG at their house about once or twice a quarter.

Next door to them, is a REALLY old couple who are newleyweds. They dated in high school and college, then broke up. Both of them got married to other people, who both died of cancer. They reconnected about 4 years ago, and got married, and bought a cute little corner house with a great yard. He's a former NFL talent scout, so he has some great stories.

We're in rear entry homes, so we have an alley that backs up to our house. Our neighbour behind our house was a total jerk. Lived by himself, listened to techno as loud as he could when he was home. He was the only neighbour we would ever hear. He was in traveling sales for Lowe's so he was gone quite often. His house is on the market now because he foreclosed in February. I was kind of happy to see the Uhaul in front of his house last week. I'm a terrible person for thinking that thought.

My neighbor to the left is an older man and his 20 something son live there. They both smoke like crazy and we can smell it in our apartment as if they were in it. They have 2 cats, 1 of which they let roam free. Hence our area outside has been infested with fleas since they moved in 4 years ago and we fight a battle against them every summer in our apartment. His son is also the most ill tempered man I''ve ever seen and recently called his dad a "mother f*cker, you stupid p*ssy." To which his father replied *F*ck you!"

My neighbor to the right is great. She''s a Chinese lady living alone (but married as her husband must work in Asia). She has 2 college age kids. Religious woman.

She also just moved (or was evicted) out last week because I heard she hasn''t paid rent for 11 months and owes 1000s of dollars. Too bad, she was a nice neighbor for 6 years.

No, I swear I don''t live in a ghetto.

I lucked out with this little pocket. Other areas in the same development would have me pulling my hair out.

Down the street some, we have a huge Indian family who lives sort of tucked into this curve, a fake cul-de-sac if you will. So, they have the longest driveway behind their house. However, they insist on parking all of their cars in front of their house, nose into the curb. There are seriously 7 silver cars jammed in front of their house, and both of their neighbours. If I lived on that half of the street, I'd have a complete temper tantrum about it.

Also, why is every single one of their cars silver? I don't get that!

I also live in an apartment. The area we live in has a lot of young couples, but our particular building is full of a ton of old women (like 90+ years old). Our neighbor on the left is an unbelievably sweet 85 or 90 year old woman who invited me inside once just to show me her apartment and all the pictures of her deceased husband and her beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. She''s very nice.

Our neighbor on the right side I''ve never seen. We''ve lived here for 6 months and have never heard anything from that apartment or seen anyone go in or out. We know someone DOES live there, but we have no idea who.

Wow! We don''t know nearly as much about our neighbors.

I only know the neighbors who have dogs and actually walk them, or who have small children and walk them around in strollers.

Most of the dog people are lovely (I have a theory that 99% of dog owners are just plain cool) and the baby people are, well, they''re okay. DH and I have noticed a bit of snobbery around here, but not with everyone.

Our next door neighbors are a bit older, and their grandson lives with them and his young son. We talk to the grandson more than anyone, he''s nice but he smokes on his front porch which drives DH mad.

The house on the other side of us is unoccupied, so those neighbors are just wonderful. Perfect, really.

My neighbors are a 29 yr old woman and her husband (mid to late 30''s) and their three kids. The guy builds houses and has offered DH help working on the garage. The mom stays at home and she and her friend babysit kids. The kids are always at my house playing with my little boy. Their youngest son brought my little boy his old Scooby fishing pole the other day.

On the other side there is a middle aged couple who park their RV too close to my driveway. But, they''re very nice and the lady brings me veggies from her garden. In return, her husband is always borrowing tools from my DH.

Across the street we have a couple and their 2 yr old son. He likes to run in the road a lot.

I''m pretty lucky...as it turns out.

I had a falling out with my neighbor over landscaping this Spring, but we''ve patched it up and are all good again. She''s extremely nice, a single mom and a teacher. You can tell her divorce left her hurting, so we often buy her or give her things we have that she needs -- like I found out on Saturday that she didn''t have home phones...so I rushed out and bought her a set. I watch her daughter occasionally in the evening if she has a track meet...and in return she watches my dogs or waters my plants.

Our other neighbor is high up at Toyota and is hysterical. He''s super nice...always offers to help Mark with "garage stuff". Very friendly and his girlfriend is a peach.

The neighbor directly next to me is a doctor. Helpful, I know. He''s always very sweet (although he flooded our basement twice, grrr) and actually spends his Sunday mornings roasting coffee for all of us in the court.

The lady directly behind us is a Persian cat breeder. She''s really funny. She is always offering us kittens! I''m always accepting! Mark is always dragging me away!

A few doors down there is an older man with his wife. She is sick and I go over every week and style/cut or perm her hair for her. Behind them lives another older woman. I just found out that their children married a while ago, but sadly the son of the older couple died of a heart attack.

We consider ourselves lucky. We really do. We have big fire pits where we roast marshmellows and hot dogs, and just chat. We know that our court is "safe" and people are watching out for each other.

I actually know a PSer is sort of a neighbour. Not in the same exact area, but she bought from the same builder in the same town.

We just bought our house this year and live in an area where people keep to themselves

so we only know the next door neighbors and not that well. I''ve been trying to change that by saying hello to everyone we pass when we''re out running or at the neighborhood pool. It''s not working yet, but I''m very persistent.

The neighbor on one side of us is a single lady probably in her late ''30s. No kids, but I believe her sister and two neices spend a lot of time at her place. She works a lot and I think travels much of the time (for business). She''s very quiet and very friendly...everything you''d want in a neighbor!

The neighbors on the other side are 2 sisters. One is in college and the other is maybe a year or two out of grad school. Their parents own the house, but live in another city for their jobs. The parents come "home" almost every weekend. The older sister''s boyfriend spends a lot of time at the house as well. They are also really friendly and quiet.

Our neighbors are way cooler than we are. The apartment above us is a couple in their early 30s; he''s an actor and she''s a playwright. The couple below is is late 20s/early 30s; she''s a writer and he''s a singer/songwriter/comedian. They all get really interesting trade journals/magazines.

I live in an apartment with DH and our three cats. The only neighbor on this floor is a nice, quiet, single guy. Well, he might have a GF or something, but he lives alone is what I mean. He''s nice.

Our upstairs neighbor is an Ahole. He''s loud, stomps around, and has the squeakiest bed in the world. I actually yelled "STOP IT. SHUT UP!" last night because he is so annoying. I just got back from being in the hospital and he is having his own personal party up there. The landlord has already told him that he is being annoying, but he won''t stop being loud. I can''t believe one person makes that much noise!

We''re in a set of rowhomes.

On our right are my most favorite neighbors, a mother, son, and teenage grandson all living together. They are so nice to chat with and will look after our pets in a pinch, take in our packages when UPS leaves them out on the stoop, and generally good neighbors.

On our left, the home is for rent right now. We are praying for good neighbors. The people there before never kept up their lawn and made the whole block look terrible.

Neighbors to the left are nice though the man of the house worries about our yard too much & really grasps at straws to find something to bring up. Neighbors to our right we say hi to that is it, I don''t know much about them. Neighbors across the street are husband/wife veterinarian team I see on the news pretty often. Neighbor to their right does something with golf courses in Vegas. Neighbor next to him I don''t know anything about he is really good looking, though

. There is a neighbor up the street that drives a porsche, walks his dog in scrubs at dusk, lets it do it''s business in my yard

& then throws his cigarette in my grass. I told my husband I''m going to collect the butts & leave them on his doorstep.

I rent a condo that used to be an apartment, so it has that same apartment style setup.

Our next door neighbor is an older, retired lady. She has a little dog, not sure of the breed, and 2-3 large parrots. She invited us in to see the birds, and they''re so cute! I''m also shocked we never hear them through the walls, because the bigger the bird they louder they screech! We talk birds a lot because we have a cockatiel also.

She''s super friendly, and has offered to watch our bird when we''re out of town. The across the hall neighbors I haven''t really spoken with. They''re friendly and say hi when we cross paths however.

I bought my condo in Leisure World so I am one of a very few residents who goes to work, and certainly one of the youngest here. It''s a gated community of about 6 thousand single level condos, and you have to stop at the guard shack to enter = totally safe. Crime is practically non-existant. We don''t have any druggies or thiefs in their 70''s

It''s the first time I''ve left windows open when I run to the store. My neighbors are all in their late 60''s to mid 80''s so I''m the "kid" on the block. I''m a night owl (but quiet) and it''s weird that all the lights are off in everyone''s condo by 8:30. Sometimes I walk the dog around midnight and you could hear a pin drop. The good thing is that they all walk or bicycle for exercise - the bad thing is they all do it wearing dark clothes. Duh. You know those upside down tomato plant things they advertise on TV? I think they sold ALL of them here.

BTW, they work. If I actually were retired it''s a pretty cool place to live. Olympic swimming pool, spa, private golf course, some 200 clubs (art, woodworking, pottery, yoga, you name it). Unfortunately for me, all the fun stuff happens from 8am to 4pm. I haven''t really gotten to know any of my neighbors beyond a quick hello yet, as I''ve only moved in a couple of months ago.

All of our neighbors are wonderful, we have been here since 1985. Except...... one couple who just moved in next door. GAH!!!!!!!!!!! They drive hubby and I nutso. They don''t keep their front yard up, don''t pull weeds, they let their lawn die, etc. Their house, makes our street look awful.

Everyone on our street, is not happy with them at all. Their house stands out like a sore thumb.

The house on our right is an older couple-semi retired now. She was the receptionist at the Dr. I went to for years, so I''ve known her for a long time. They''re both wonderful people. The kids love them.

On our left..they''re odd. They''re about my parents age or so, and we''ve known the kids since we were in school (we all went to school in neighboring towns), who are our age and younger b/c they were a bit infamous back in the day..for being uh..intimate with each other. JD calls the daughter Scabby Legs. They don''t come around a lot anymore, so it''s mostly just the mom and dad. We''ve lived her for almost 8 years and maybe exchanged a couple "Hi"''s and that''s it.

Across the street is a family we like-the mom is super friendly and I think was probably a cheerleader when she was in school. They have a son who was like..8 or 10 (younger maybe) when we moved in, so we''ve seen him grow up from a chubby little shy boy.

My Gramma lives kiddy corner from us and family friends next door to her-I called them my In Town Parents when I was younger. It''s nice-we can walk up and go swimming at Gramma''s, and if something happens, K & B are up the street and around the corner. The kids call them Aunt and Uncle.

The other guy upstairs is a photojournalist for the local paper and I never see him either. Across the street are the Catholic church and the convent, and the priest''s home. Directly to my right is a restored historic home that was formerly inhabited by a couple from Brooklyn...they''ve since moved out and the house is for sale so no neighbors there. No problems with anyone.

We live in the country, and only have two houses close to ours. To the right lives a middle-aged couple with 2 teenage daugthers who are usually away at college. They let their 4 chihuahuas out all the time, adn let them run wherever they please. Our driveway is very long and goes past their house and when we drive down it, the dogs come racing out the house chasing our cars, and sometimes even down the street. I am shocked that none of them have been run over yet! The wife always "forgets" that she let them outside at night and goes to bed, so many times we''ve knocked on the door with the herd of dogs at our feet! The husband is very nice though, he likes to chat with my husband about guy things.
The lady that lives to our left is probably in her 50''s, and since living here for a year and a half, I''ve only seen her a few times anf we''ve never chatted much. Her boyfriend recently moved in, I think, and parked his dumpy camper next to our driveway. My husband has been over there a few times when she''s asked for help with moving things, etc.

I wish we had neighbors that were closer to our age (20s) but we love our house and the setting it''s in.

On one side, we have family with two young kids. The couple is GREAT - they''re a little older I think (like maybe early 40''s instead of early-mid 30s). He seems to know everyone and will strike up a conversation really easily. They''ve helped us with quite a few house things that we first-time homeowners didn''t know how to do, like hooking up a gas stove. The kids are really cute and mostly well-behaved.

On the other side, it''s a rental with college students - the college students are actually great. Very quiet, take care of the house/yard, no loud music, no parties. I''m hoping they stay for grad school and take yeaaars to write a dissertation, haha. Apparently, the students in the past have gotten a little rowdy, but since it''s a family neighborhood there''s really good university-neighborhood relations and the police are pretty no-nonsense. Problems seem to get cleared up very, very quickly, so we''re not too worried about future tenants there.

I live in an apartment and there are only 2 apts. on each floor. The guy next to us is a painter, and he uses our shared deck to store his materials. It's kind of fun to see his new paintings every few days. We've only said hello though -- he's not much of a talker. Oh yeah, I forgot that one of our downstairs neighbors is very verbally abusive to his wife/girlfriend. I've been tempted to call the police but haven't yet. We haven't heard them in a while.

We're moving soon to a bigger condo soon and we met a couple when we went to check the place out. They're really nice and they have a great chocolate lab. We spent a while talking to them and it seems as though we have a lot in common. It would be fun to hang out them once we move in if the occasion came up.

ETA: Where we live now seems to have a lot of recently graduated guys and girls who are still in the partying phase. I eavesdrop sometimes to some of them who I run into at the pool often, and they talk about drinking and going out to this club or that one a lot. I can't wait to move. We're moving to a great area of the city and the new complex seems much better.

I have a question. I think it''s a nice gesture to introduce yourself to your immediate neighbors when you first move to a new place, but my husband thinks that it should be the neighbor who knocks on the door and introduces him/herself to the new couple/family. What''s your take?

To the extent there was ever a rule, the existing neighbors were supposed to go over and welcome the new neighbor by introducing themselves. These days, I''d just introduce myself to the neighbors and not worry about who is "supposed" to do it.

I''m very shy in situations like this and it takes me a LONG time to get up the nerve to talk to neighbors (yet I can strike up a convo with a TOTAL stranger at Starbucks-go figure). If they speak to me I''ll say hi, otherwise I''ll just lift a hand and smile as I drive by.

We have a dirty look war going on with a neighbor at the end of our street. He doesn''t clean up after his dog, even after being asked nicely to do so, and it irks us to no end. We see him every morning and we give him dirty looks when we drive by.

Our neighbor to the right is a middle-aged single guy. He''s nice. Sometimes he''ll snow blow our driveway after a big storm or mow our lawn if we''re out of town. We do the same for him. The people across the street are interesting. It''s a duplex and the guy who owns it decided he didn''t want a front yard. So he paved it. The entire front yard is paved with asphalt and crushed stone. He and his stripper gf (Destiny) live on one side and his mom lives on the other. His mom is a very very sweet lady and I like her a lot. Her son is nice as well, he looks out for the neighborhood, but more like a street heavy (walks outside with a gun if he sees anyone suspicious) than anything else. He hasn''t been around in a few months and DH and I suspect he might be in jail or on the lam.

I have one real neighbor. We don''t speak to them because they killed a bunch of our cats with poison (including one that had just had kittens, so we had to hand raise them) and their "Christian" children tried to run me over with their car in high school. They are rarely home anymore (thank goodness), and their grown children never stop by. I don''t blame them. Crazies.

Across the street is an older woman living with her 5-6 year old son and her 20-something middle child. There are always a bunch of ghetto people over there with their 5 kids but they are quiet and don''t bother us. One has a baby girl that is ADORABLE, and the mother always waves hello when we pass.

Behind us is one house with a couple kids that we caught lobbing rocks at our air conditioner once, and I told their mother, so we never see anyone at all from there anymore. Right next to them is a house that USED to have a bunch of crazy party people that were loud and obnoxious at all hours, until the cops finally came and arrested the guy that lived there, so the many girlfriends moved out. The lot on the other side of us is empty.

We actually live in a decent neighborhood, no crime or anything, but some people are just crazy. Thankfully everyone leaves us alone. I used to start my car and leave it running in the mornings to warm up and no one ever touched it.

It is interesting to see how well people do or do not know their neighbors! You can put me in the group that doesn''t know her neighbors well!

When I bought my house, I spent about 4 months redoing stuff and fixing it up before I moved in. I got to know the neighbor to the left right away and he seemed pretty nice. He''s a single 30-ish year old, long hair, long beard, kinda creepy looking, actually.. Anyways he was really friendly but the day I moved in he came out when the movers got there at 11 and was already drunk. He kept going back to his house and coming back to mine and each time he was drunker. It got really creepy because a couple times I would go to leave and he was just standing on my front porch!!! I just ignored him and walked past him. I think he got the hint because I haven''t seen him since.. and it was about 1 1/2 years ago!!

The lady on the right is a super nice old lady who lives by herself. She keeps an eye on the street and calls the city and police about anything that needs to be taken care of (ok, the street is kind of shady!).. She has a cab that picks her up every once in awhile.. She also has family/friends visit frequently but usually just on the weekends. She has a nice new car but I''m pretty sure she doesn''t drive it..

The family across the street is super nice. I really haven''t gotten past the general greetings and comments about each others yards (nice ones, not rude!). The wife works part time and spends a lot of time in the yard so we used to be out there a lot together when I had time for yardwork. They have a daughter who looks to be in high school.. She usually sits on the front porch while the parents do yard work!
