Taking Paypal payments for things you sell

I have just gotten a payment through Paypal for the first time. Bought using it several times. My question that I can't seem to find an answer to on their site is what is the % of each payment transaction that you receive or it is a set amount?

Can anyone help me to understand?

indeed. When I found out my last buyer was international she had no problem pay the extra fee+extra shipping

Thanks, I would have no problem paying the difference if I was the International buyer.

PP fees are a rip-off! I recently found this out when I listed things for sale here . I arranged for wire payments instead. If both parties are comfortable doing that, that's what I'd do.

I totally agree. I am going to see if my buyer will wire transfer me the balance of our transaction.

How is a buyer protected with a wire transfer? I've always used paypal and add the ebay fees to that and it's about 10%, love DB because it cuts out the ebay part. If you buy and do a wire transfer but never receive the item, how can you get your money back?

You have to go to court, it's a civil case, there's no protection with wiring funds, checks, or money orders like there is with paypal.
I'd prefer to pay with paypal for security reasons, if it's something I really want I'd be willing to pay the paypal fees if the seller had it as a stipulation for selling Internationally.
I buy and sell on ebay regularly and I have never asked a buyer to pay for fees, nor have I been asked to pay a seller's fees, yet...

With the higher international fees, isn't it if they are in a different currency? I live in the UK, but if a buyer invoices me through paypal they can pick the currency. As long as they pick USD and I pay in USD then there is no higher fees for international transactions on the seller's side. At least that's my understanding. Is anyone able to confirm this?

you don't!, so you better be real comfortable with the seller before wiring him/her the money.

Paypal is risker for the seller in terms of buyer fraud but offers the buyer protection. Wire transfer is great for the seller but offers the buyer no protection. I generally consign higher ticket items for this reason because I got tired of worrying about a sale until it was finalized. And I personally wouldn't pay by wire transfer. Actually I don't even pay that way for business because it can be an issue if they go out of business before you receive the goods or if there a problem with things I'd rather have my credit card protecting me.

I scanned this thread and didn't see it mentioned, but if the buyer uses a direct bank draft instead of a CC I believe there are not any PayPal fees. The fees are only associated with credit card use (at least I think this is the case domestically).

If I were in an international buyer I would not have any problem paying an additional bit to help you out with the fees.
