Swords?

Does anyone know anything about swords? My boyfriend's family has one that has been passed down, but they know very little about it.

With swords a good story that can be verified can raise the worth 20x and 100x if a famous person touched it.
Actual use in a famous battle can also raise it.

Pictures pretty please, and any provenance. I know crap about swords but one of the girls I work with at the antique mall adores pointy things and I could ask her, or look it up in one of the zillions of reference books downstairs on swords.
