The Reuters article identified below about the swine flu has a thought provoking statement therein. "Close analysis showed the disease is a mixture of swine, human and avian viruses, according to the CDC."
http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE53N22820090424

And . . . have a look here: CDC to mix avian, human flu viruses in pandemic study. This was originally published on Jan 14, 2004 in CIDRAP.

Not good.

Has anyone begun to worry seriously? I have, based on its similarity to the 1918 flu.
not really, it is mild compared to the 1918 strain, It is just that world travel makes it spread out more.
How dangerous a flu is based on how bad the 5th and 6th generation is.
This one doesn't look that bad, so far the later generations are weaker.
Which is why there are so few deaths compared to earlier cases.
The real risk is a generation gets stronger and spreads easier with worse symptoms and that isn't happening.
I think we are past the point where that is going to happen but it can sometimes happen at any generation which is why cdc is worried.
If it mixes with yet another strain then there might be far worse problems but that is rare.

The biggest danger is coming in contact with a first or second generation case and they are close to being past the point of infection at this point.
Avoiding the first, second and third generation starting points aka Mexico is a good idea otherwise im not that worried.

not even remotetly and I work in NYC, call me crazy but I still remember all the bird flu hype, and the tv movies that came out of it, and it wasn''t nearly as bad as predicted

I''m worried enough to take the appropriate precautions, but not enough to be alarmed. It''s beyond my control.

no wonder there''s hand sanitizer everywhere I go at work!!!
Gosh, that is unsettling

. What city are you in?

I''m in Calgary, Canada....

Not worried, at all! It''s so funny how hyped all of this is. I''m a doctor and I''d estimate we''ve mentioned this whole swine flu twice this week, in joking. We did get a fwd email today though about a few local college students suspected of having the virus.

However, by all means- prepare however makes you feel comfortable.

I have a picture I want to post, but are we allowed to say b@stard here?

Lol. You just did.

I too am hoping that the virus mutates into a very mild strain!

Harriet- I am starting to worry. The school district that I grew up in just closed it's doors thru May 9. That is an 80,000 student school district.

Also, FI leaves for Vegas in about 2 hours for his Bachelor party, and I have been worrying about people he'll be sitting/standing next to at craps and blackjack tables... and on the plane. He'll be around so many random people, and they are saying that it could get much worse in the next 48-96 hours.

Interesting. I just read on CNN.com that Swine Flu is not, in fact, a new flu.

"Swine flu was first identified in 1930 when researchers isolated the virus in a pig. In 1976, more than 200 soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey, got swine flu. From 1976 until 2005, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received approximately one report every year or two of humans with swine flu. From December 2005 until January 2009, there were 12 cases of swine flu reported."

I''m not too worried about this. ONE person has died so far in the US and it was a TODDLER.
20.gif

They''re dying so fast in mexico because no one has decent healthcare and there''s like 35 families to a house down there. (Don''t get me wrong, I LURVE Mexico, but it ain''t no NYC.)

I''m watching the stories, but I''m not gonna freak out because of a new strain of the flu. There are a couple of products that are working quite well against this, and it''s not like your asymptomatic and then BAM, you''re dead. Just go to the hospital if you think you are flu-ey!

Now, a new strain of rabies? THAT I would be scared of. Anyone seen Quarantine?

I''m on icekid''s page. I feel like it''s severely over rated right now. Normal flu strains kill over half a million a year.... HALF A MILLION and we don''t freak out over them..... it''s a good distraction, and it''s more scary b/c it''s new.

Its reached my city now.

Maisie
That sucks hon! Stock up on some vitamin c and be safe ok?

I am being such a big girl I know. I just flap over stuff like this. And I worry about my Dad. He has a weak chest and wouldn''t cope with a bad flu. He was seriously ill the last time he had it and that was ten years ago.

It's in my state now and notices are being sent out from schools. One school has been cancelled for a week.

My husband thinks it's a conspiracy leading up to a worse and dangerously deadly flu. Kind of like "The Stand," by Stephen King.

There is a toddler in Reno who has it & apparently her symptoms are manageable. She was in daycare so I bet the other parents are

My daughter is out sick already for the week so I will see what Monday brings us. She has been picking up everything under the sun & I would hate to add flu to the list

I''m not worried about myself & my husband already had the flu this year. Crossing my fingers he doesnt get anything else.

The first case in the Boston area was just reported (Cambridge)...

Here''s the info on the CDC site:

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/index.htm

The lab confirmed cases are so small, that it is hard to decide how concerned to be. I just wish we didn''t have non-refundable tickets to NYC in 6 weeks.

I think the media definitely blows it out of proportion. Thousands of people die annually from the "regular" flu and nobody makes a big fuss about it. I work in a pharmacy and I just tell people to wash their hands frequently and use common sense. I have had SO many doctors call in prescriptions for Tamiflu for their family members and friends as a "stockpile," but the thing is, it doesn''t cure the flu, it just helps with symptom relief if taken within 48 hours. We only had 4 packages available (also on backorder), so I asked all of the physicians if the patient had symptoms consistent with the flu, if they had been in contact with a confirmed case, or if they had done an influenza test on the patient. After asking those 3 questions, about 3/4 cancelled their orders.
20.gif

Just be diligent with hand-washing and stay home if you are sick. If you have any questions, definitely call your local pharmacy. I am always happy to answer the questions of everyone that comes into my store. Best of health to everyone.

I have been sick the last 3 days with a "flu". Today I went to the Dr and because I am a healthcare worker AND there are 2 reported cases in the town I work, I had to have a swab done for swine flu. Trust me, the swab is NOT pleasant! The result will come Sat., but the Dr isn''t too worried because I have no fever.

April I hope you feel better soon.

I guess it is good that I don''t get out much.

We have a big Salt Lake City fly-in going on for my business on Monday and my local people are afraid to go because I guess Park City has closed some [all?] of their schools because lots of residents had traveled to Mexico for school break and they are worried about the flu. [Apologies for the wonky grammar.]

Not at all worried, tired of hearing about it.

I''ve postponed my chemo infusion that was supposed to take place early Friday morning. I''ve got a sinus infection and it has moved into my ears and may be headed into my chest, but I don''t think it is the flu. Unfortunately, my tummy has now become upset and I''m running to the bathroom quite a bit....TMI....I know. Just watching to see where this ends up. I have chills and body aches, but no fever.

I''ve had the flu before and it was the most horrible thing to go through...and that was when I had a healthy immune system. Is the Houston/Texas government overreacting? I don''t know. They''ve closed schools and cancelled sporting activities.

My DH''s 50th birthday will be on June 28 and I had hoped to take him somewhere as a surprise (if I''m up to it.) Should we not fly or travel to a public place? We love to go to casinos and they are full of all sorts of people in close proximity.

What would you do?

Lori

Hi Lori,

it sounds like you may also be getting a flare. I would take it extra easy and stay away from crowded area/public spaces as much as possible. With a compromised immune system, it is better to rest when your body calls for it - even if the flu virus was not the issue.

Take care of yourself!

I''m sorry but your comments about "like 35 families to a house... it ain''t no NYC" didn''t make any sense to me. Sorry. Whatever you meant, it went right over my head.

Hong Kong used to be this dirty overpopulated city. Street vendors were selling meat that was covered with dust, and the only clean restroom was at my relatives'' places only because they are neat freaks. I think the only time people washed their hands was when they took a shower.
Ever since the SARS breakout, they put plastic covers on elevator buttons which were changed many times a day. Janitors to clean the buildings regularly, immaculate bathrooms, and people give you a dirty look if you so much as sneeze.
I hope this current flu will encourage Mexico to make the same changes, but it will be hard because it''s not a tiny city like HK.

Your post is interesting because I've never heard Hong Kong described as a tiny city, but I know what you mean about Mexico City's size- it's staggering how many people live there.
