Try not to worry. Like you said, it''s out of our control.

haven''t chased up Strm''s latest newslink yet, but on the news over here just now, they are saying it is really important to get medical assistance within the first 48 hours of the flu symptoms being noticed.

My nanny asked me to day if she should take Amelia to the park. I was like, huh? My answer was by all means, if it made her uncomfortable, don''t go. But I was perfectly fine with Amelia going out to the park. I just recommended to take the hand sanitizer and use it for both of them then.

As of yesterday, 20 cases were found in the US. 20 out of over 300 million people. I''ll start panicking when there are 50,000 cases in LA.

Ditto TG.

OK, now I'm panicked. The cases have doubled to FORTY.

You had better go stock up on Tamiflu for your nanny....

Hm. They just confirmed a case up here in Northern CA, near where I live.

I think I''ll remind the kid to wash his hands before eating lunch and to stay away from kids who are sick. It''s a little concerning, but not overly so.

My SIL, who vacationed in Mexico a week and a half ago and came home sick, is finally at urgent care tonight...she''s had flu symptoms for over a week...she''s feeling better, but she finally agreed that it was best to be checked out to see if she had the swine flu or another virus of some kind. I hope for her sake it''s not swine flu, just because it would be pretty freaky to have had it, in an ''official'' kind of way...

My DH is the manager of a plant nursery store and many of their employees travel back and forth to Mexico and beyond to visit their families. I''m home with SLE Lupus and am in the middle of chemo infusions. My immune system is non functioning. I''m praying that the friends/employees are safe from this horrible flu and that my DH doesn''t become affected by it and that he doesn''t bring it home to me...it could do me in.

I know the cases in NY were reported to be not that bad but it freaks me out since I work in hospitalls in the NYC boroughs. Yikes.

Ann...let us know how your SIL is. I sincerely hope she just has a cold.

Okay, so now there are reported outbreaks in Australia...14 suspected cases in Qld...

Oh Lori ! Of all the stories posted in this thread, yours is the most compelling. I do know what lupus is, but have never heard of the SLE part before.

You should be in the hospital, dear. With your immune system not functioning, isolation sounds the safest for you right now.

I know that we all heal better faster at home, but this situation could definitely put your life in jeopardy.

Oh Lori, please take care and don''t take any unnecessary risks. I hear this virus can exist on inanimate objects, such as money etc. You must read all you can about taking precautions. But take heart that no-one outside of Mexico has died so far and I hear the worst affected seem to be healthy young people. Never thought I would be pleased not to be in that group.

I''ve been watching the CNN and BBC World news all day and I really don''t like what I am hearing. BTW, I''m glued to the news because I have no internet AGAIN
emangry.gif
. Apparently we''ve got router/modem issues now - where will it end. I''ve come across to my neighbours house to check my e-mails and I thought I would flit through PS and came across this thread.

Where I live we have tremendous traffic between here and Mexico, it''s only a matter of time. My son has a second job at a big sports stadium in town. He works a concession stand. I''ve been trying to impress upon him the need to wash his hands as often as he can.

Take care of you Lori

Geez, how could i have missed this post?? I''m so sorry, Loriken, to hear of your current circumstance!! I know from a close friend who is caring for her m-i-l throughout chemo, that the doctors do tend to keep a close eye on family illnesses... my friend is expected to go on antibiotics the instant a sniffle is detected!

Apparently this flu is able to be treated, quite efficiently with current drugs (according to information that I have read through the media, that is!) if the flu is treated within 48 hours.

THANK YOU for the support and concern! I''ve been sneezing all afternoon, but I believe it is allergies from the crazy weather we''ve been having lately. I''m going to call my rheumatologist in the morning to see what he thinks I should do. My next chemo infusion is this Friday.

I mentioned the situation to my DH and he didn''t seem very worried, but he keeps things to himself.

yes, it can be a very effective way for men to operate, can it not? Or... not!

Three confirmed cases in my region (N.California), all schoolkids. Apparently the outbreak started with one student who traveled to Mexico during spring break. My employer has banned all travel to Mexico for now -- almost a moot point since budget constraints have pretty much had the same effect.

I feel bad for the many people in Mexico that work in the tourism industry. I was there a few weeks after 9-11 and the resort areas were really hurting. At that time they said tourism was down by about 80% -- I imagine it will be as bad this time around.

Lori -- please take care, and tell that taciturn hubby of yours to take extra precautions too!

Lori, I hope you can avoid getting this! Make sure hubby washes his hands a lot! And the hospital is about the worst place you could be actually, your lowered immune system can not fight off the MANY germs you'd be exposed to in a hospital setting! Stay home, but limit visitors and make sure hubby stays healthy too.

I heard back from my brother last night and thankfully my SIL doesn't have swine flu, but she does have bronchial pneumonia! She is getting better though.

And I am VERY concerned about my son and his GF...they are driving through TX tomorrow and staying over night with his GF's step dad, on their way home from AZ. There is a woman in my county who is being tested for the swine flu and she had also 'driven through' TX recently, she didn't even stay there, but they are pretty sure she has it. I just hope my son and his GF come through alright! And we sure don't want it brought into our house either! I'm recovering from a health issue as well, I've had a long 4 months of recovery and this has me concerned a bit. I've told the kids too, to keep washing their hands and to use Purell!

BTW, I heard on the news this morning that "Purell" and the Red Cross brand of hand sanitizer are the only brands that are effective against this virus and bacteria. They both have a higher alcohol content, 60%, the other brands do not kill as many germs because they have a lower alcohol content.

Take care of yourself Lori. I hope that everythings ok.

My mother's getting chemo too. It does worry me because she catches colds really easily right now.
As for me and my husband and daughter we are just washing our hands a lot ( there are two confirmed cases in the county next door) and if we feel symptoms we won't hesitate to go to the doctor asap. I'm in San Francisco.

I can't tell if the media is hyping this or if it's something to worry about?

That is how I feel. Is it serious because typically we would be past flu season? They say most cases are responding to tamiflu.?

I'm only worried about my daughter, she has been sick ever since starting preschool in March. She probably only feels good 2 maybe 3 days before something else comes on.

Well, this is what I get for mocking it...no, I don''t have swine flu, but what I DO have is a cousin who has been planning a trip out here for weeks with my favorite aunt. My aunt is staying here for a week while cousin and his family are taking a cruise to MEXICO.

I''m thinking maybe I won''t bring Amelia around to see them when they come back through. Or maybe I''ll stop being paranoid and come back down to earth.

I heard that Carnival has canceled their cruises to Mexico...maybe your cousin's trip will be called off?

As far as the media hype, I think they kind of have to tell people where this is moving and if people are dying from it...again, because the ages of those who are dying isn't 'typical' - the whole outbreak is atypical and I'd rather they err on the side of hype, than not say enough. But it's up to us to not lose our heads, just listen to the info and take appropriate measures. That's all anyone can do at this point.

And I also heard about Tamiflu, they don't have ANY access to it in Mexico...

I was watching the news this evening and my husband was very dismissive of the whole thing. He said nobody from round here goes to Mexico. I said what about the flights that go from our local airport every day to Mexico carrying holiday makers. His response.. well I don''t know anyone who is going so we will be fine!

Not yet from what I can see on Carnival, which is what my cousin is taking.

Funny, today I am sick with upper respiratory symptoms....chest congestion, cough, headache, aches... and all I can think about is swine flu. Waiting for a fever to get it checked. Any other time I would shrug it off.

Sorry, it must have been a different line that canceled, I JUST heard it on our local news that one of the big lines announced it today!

I''d sure think twice about going to Mexico...at least at this point. Hope it all works out!

I''m still worried about my son and his GF coming from Texas this weekend! I''ve never had to deal with anything like this before, being close to something like this...makes it more real when your own kid could be affected. I don''t blame you for protecting your daughter either!

You weren''t totally wrong...Carnival canceled Mexican ports of call on three of their ships. They are deciding on the rest. I can''t imagine them not canceling, actually.

There are NO confirmed cases in Canada, with the exception of 2 cases that may be related (but still looking into it , and there doesn's seem to be much to concern), no deaths fortunately.
They are however, recalling some food items such as pork and bacon (some brands), that could be contaminated and if eaten, contribute to developing swine flu. My best friend just got back today (she stayed at a 5+ resort on the Mayan Riviera) and all seems fine!

Thank you Ara Ann!

Thank goodness your SIL doesn''t have the flu and that she''s getting better!!!

My DH told me last night to be sure and wash my hands with Purell. He''s watching the news after all!

I''m all stuffy and ache all over today, but feel that it is allergies and my lupus flaring. The sneezing has increased, but that is allergies, I''m sure. We''ll move my chemo infusion to a day next week. I''m going to bed and will stay there until I feel better.

Hope we all stay well!

Lori
