Wow! This is scary stuff for me on a personal level too. Our son and his family booked a vacation to Los Cabos about a week before all this came to light. I''ve been forwarding updates as I see them, but ultimately it''s their decision.

What''s a worried mom to do???

I would ground him. They are never too old to be grounded

Seriously though, I would beg and plead and threaten if it was my kids and their family. I wouldn't want them to go and I would do all I could to stop them if it was really that dangerous.

Thanks for your input, Storm and Maisie. ITA that it would be ''nutz'' to go down there.

I will do as you suggest, Maisie - beg, threat and reason

Reasoning works best with him so I''ll try that first.

I just read my post back and I think I came across as a really controlling mother! I''m not really but I would do everything I could to persuade my son not to go.

I hope he listens to you reasoning!

If this makes it''s way towards my area I''m yanking my daughter out of preschool.

This is scary stuff. If it reaches our area up north, the grandboys will be yanked out of school.

This is dreadful.

Why isn''t anyone in the US dying from it? Are all the known US cases treated or is it too early to know?

From what i''ve heard, it is not a ''big deal'' flu. Standard OTC drugs like theraflu handle it just fine. The people who have been dying from it are from impoverished areas that don''t have access to standard medical resources, and are in (generally) poor health to begin with (making it harder to recover on one''s own).

Probably because there haven''t been that many cases here. It is possible that the people who died in Mexico had other complications or didn''t get treatment they needed.

Scary stuff indeed. As someone who lives in LA, takes the crowded buses, and goes to a school environment everyday I definitely worry about things like this. I also have a friend that lives in Los Angeles, but works in Mexicali every Mon-Thursday and I definitely worry about him. I''m hoping the deaths are due more to lack of resources to get care than the degree of danger of the flu.

That was exactly what I was thinking.

Not that I am trying to be indifferent or "It won''t happen to me," but it doesn''t seem like I should panic at this point.

No, you shouldn''t.

No one with access to a pharmacy (or hospital for a worst-case scenario) should worry at all. Of course, it could always mutate, but that is not a major concern at this point.

In the paper, two articles have said that the swine flu is causing deaths among healthy 20-40 year olds. That's causing their concern.

That said, I think people are freaking out and panicking. It's even crossed my mind that since flu vaccines have come out, companies who make products like Tamiflu aren't making as much profit and may be hyping up the piggy flu to boost sales.

What''s a worried mom to do???

The map Karl''s post linked to does not show any cases in Cabo San Lucas. The only cases in Baja California appear to be in Mexicali, which is worlds away from Cabo, really.

I know that nothing will really quell a worried mother''s concerns, but I hope that helps a little bit!

Thanks for the reassurance, VRBeauty. I saw the map that Karl posted and noticed the same thing about Los Cabos; however, they''re not scheduled to leave until the 18th of May and a lot can change by then.

Maisie, I really didn''t think of you as a controlling parent at all

Actually, I heard in the earliest reports about the deaths in Mexico, that these were young and otherwise healthy individuals who died...which is what made it even more frightening. I guess the elderly and very young (in Mexico anyway)had fared better than the young adults have. (whoops, I missed the earlier post saying the same thing! Sorry!)

I am another concerned mom, my 19 year old son has been living in AZ the last 3 months and is heading home this week...he has to drive through Texas and meet up with someone there, not too close to the current outbreaks, but who knows where it will be spread next! I hope he doesn't bring anything home with him!

And I SWEAR my SIL had this, last week! She had been vacationing in Mexico with her sister and their kids and came home with some kind of bad flu bug (they flew and she thought she caught a cold or SLT on the plane)...she sounded HORRIBLE and felt horrible for several days...but is getting better now...this all happened about 2 days before the news about the swine flu broke... I urged her to go to the doctor, to see if it was in fact this swine flu, but she said she's 'fine' now and doesn't need to go to the doctor...ugh. That's not the point! If it WAS the swine flu, someone needs to know about it for tracking purposes!

I really hope things get better by then for your son''s sake and my own. We''re scheduled to leave for Mexico 30 days from today (along with 31 guests) for our wedding.

Oh boy, this is when it sucks to be a doctor in San Diego.

Work will be interesting tomorrow....I wonder if I missed any cases this week. I didn''t even hear about it till Friday.

I''ll keep my fingers crossed that things settle down soon! CDN, are you headed to the Cancun area? It''s clear so far...

We had 2 cases of this about 30 minutes from here... I''m hoping it doesn''t move this way!!

Thanks VRBeauty. We''re flying into the Cancun Airport but staying in Playa Del Carmen. I feel so horrible worrying about this when people have died or are sick.
