my boyfriend and i made this for his dad for Father's Day. since his dad loves anything with Oreos and his family are just a bunch of pranksters, we decided this was perfect! we actually celebrated today with an awesome cook out and after dinner, he kept on looking around for the dessert. we had set it in the middle of the table, and then my boyfriend's brother took a spoonful of "dirt" and ate it. in total disbelief, his dad screamed out, "what the hell are you doing?!" and we all cracked up at that point. he caught on pretty quickly and was like, "did you make that? that's my dessert?!". it was a huge hit...everyone loved it and it was so easy to make. i hope you guys get to try it too!here's the recipe:2 18oz packages of Oreos
1 8oz block of cream cheese, softened
4 Tbs unsalted butter, softened
2 3.4oz packages of Jello instant vanilla pudding
1 8oz tub of Cool Whip, thawed
3 1/2 cups of cold milkcrush cookies in a food processor or in a Ziploc bag with a rolling pin and set aside. in a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter with an electric hand mixer until well blended and set aside. in another bowl, blend pudding mix and milk with electric hand mixer until slightly thickened. add the pudding to the cream cheese mixture and blend until smooth. add in thawed Cool Whip and blend again until it is all incorporated.
in a clean plastic flower pot (medium sized and preferably new), start alternating layers of the pudding mixture and Oreo crumbs. make sure the top layer is the Oreo crumbs. cover with plastic wrap and chill for several hours or overnight. before serving, wrap some silk flower stems in plastic wrap or foil, stick into the center of the pot and enjoy! gummy worms are also optional. ^_~ for added effect, serve it with a new and clean gardening shovel. better yet, use real flowers instead of silk to really throw everyone off.feel free to use chocolate pudding and/or chocolate Cool Whip for a more "chocolaty" cake. next time, i'm thinking of using chocolate pudding with mint Oreos for a grasshopper style dessert. another variation is to use Nilla wafer cookies instead of Oreos to make "sand" and instead of using a flower pot, use a sand pail and serve with a sand shovel. you can even decorate with sea shell candy!
here's our cake! i actually could not find an appropriate sized flower pot, and while shopping at Michael's for silk flowers, i found some sand pails on sale that were the perfect size and shape. i got the orange one since it reminded me of a terra cotta pot and luckily, the handle was detachable. we had to wrap it in foil since you could see the layers of the cake through the pail...thinking back, i should have used wrapping paper to make it prettier.
