Hey Sumbride, I see from an old post that you use Crate and Barrel''s Classic Century Dinnerware as your everyday dishes (or at least you did back in 2006 when you wrote said post). Quick question for you- how has it held up? I know earthenware is prone to chipping, but I am hoping that maybe (based on the price) this line is a bit sturdier?? We are just starting our registry and love the serving dishes, coffee pot and other "accent" pieces in the Classic Century line, but am concerned about durability of the plates and bowls for everyday use. Thanks!

((shameless bumping of thread in case Sumbrides logs onto PS this morning!))

Hi Havernell! sorry I didn''t see this earlier!

I still LOVE LOVE LOVE this line, BUT we have chipped one plate and one mug in the 7 months we''ve been using them. The mug was DH''s fault. He DROPPED it into the sink. The FIRST time we used it. The plate, well, I''m not sure, but it was either him or the dishwasher. It WASN''T ME!!! We''re still using the chipped plate because I haven''t gone out to get a new one yet. And really, I think it''s ok considering how much we love the plates. I haven''t seen any crazing or metallic lines like we had with our stoneware from Pfalzgraff. They are lovely to use and easy to wash. We have 12 place settings, and there are just two of us, so I imagine we''ll lose a few here and there and cope with it just fine. And I don''t think C&B will discontinue this line anytime soon. It''s a really big deal that they have it. The original Eva Zeisel dishes are in the MOMA.

We don''t have all the serving pieces yet, but we love what we do have: the footed bowl, the sauce boat and the medium serving bowl. We never put them away... we just fill them with fruit and such and leave them on display. I need to get some more pieces. And I think I''m going to get several more salad plates because they are the PERFECT size for a buffet and we''ve been hosting lots of breakfast board meetings for the neighborhood lately. I don''t like using paper, and these meetings typically have 18 people or so. I think I could use a few more plates.

Just be careful with them, but get them, use them, enjoy them! It''s art you can USE.

Hey! Thanks for responding. And don''t worry about not seeing the post earlier- night time is probably not the smartest time to post since most of the PS traffic seems to occur during the day (when we all should be working!)

Anyway, glad to hear that you love the line and that you haven''t experienced too much chipping. And I am sure it WASN''T you who chipped that one plate! :) I too love the art-like quality of the pieces and the modernist design. If the footed bowl were cheaper, I''d get 20 of them and use them as the centerpieces containers at the wedding!

Thanks again for the review- I really appreciate it!

Happy to help!

I just got some birthday money and I think I know what I''m going to do with it... I''ve been itching for that tea pot!

Did you know Eva Z. is still alive? She''s 101! And I read somewhere that she won''t sign a plate on the front, only on the back because "You''re supposed to be using this!!!" I love that! It''s so much more interesting to have dishes with a story behind them rather than "they were on sale at target".

The footed bowl was our FIRST wedding gift, from my dear friend Emily. Everytime I look at it I remember how exctied we were to unwrap it and how much Em means to me. It looks great filled with fruit, but sometimes I show DH that it fits perfectly on my head.
