Wedding Stupid Postage question

Despite good intentions to avoid both problems... I got invites that are SQUARE and that have knotted ribbon so they are lumpy to boot. They are going to have to be hand cancelled and when I took the proof to the post office they qouted me 80 something each for them (have it written down somewhere).

For some strange reason I thought I could just order stamps with for the exact amount (at not additional charge) and just use those for the invites. But I went to the post office site and there is no option like that.

Are they hand stamped by the post office? Do I have to go there to get stamps with the right value? What do I do? Invites are hopefully gonna be in the mail next Friday (assuming they get here this week).

Well...they can print a stamp at the post office but it won't be pretty. They also will NOT be happy to have to put those on at the PO, you might end up getting sent home with them and putting them on at home.

You can also make up the value using other stamps, but again because of the weird value it might not be pretty. You could also combine some of the prettier stamps to make up the 80 cents, might waste a bit of money though trying to be pretty about it ya know? (I was thinking you can use 2 42 cent heart stamps on each one)...

It was $0.87 each. But that was before the rate raises in May. So I have to get them re-weighed. I think these will work too. They aren''t offensive looking, I''m good with them. I probably will order them. What do you think.

I found a place that does custom stamps, but it doubles the price. With express shipping... it''s over a hundred dollars for 60 stamps, and these ones from the post office are only about half that.

There might be another option, albeit a bit more expensive. (I don''t know if this is the same site Gypsy ) On Stamps.com you can personalize stamps with a photo of your choice and set the postage. Their not too bad but cost more then normal stamps. Just thought id throw the idea out there

More afforable stryeyes than the one I was going to use. But still 30 bucks more than the post office. It''s tempting though, very tempting. Thank you for posting the link!

I think that when they "print the stamp" for you it's just like an address label with the amount you need on it. At least that's what they were when I mailed my international ones. It wasn't pretty but I was more concerned with it actually getting there. Really didn't want to have it sent back beacuse of lack of postage! :p

I also had square evnvelopes with a wax seal on the inside so it was bit bulky. And my first batch the post lady said $1.00 each

but I trusted her so I sent them out at that price (with ugly $1 stamps). The second batch a different post lady said it was only $.58 cents so I got to use the nromal wedding heart one.

For me though, I didn't care as much about the stamps and I don't think my guests did either. But in your case I would just try to make the correct value using the stamps they have. Buying personalized stamps for the extra money wasn't worth it to me.

I just mailed my daughter''s invitations this morning....all 125 of them. They were large envelopes and had three cardstock sheets per invite woven together with a ribbon which was then tied, plus the direction cards and reception cards and return envelope and two larger envelopes.. The first time I took them to the post office, they told me they would have to go small package rate. I did not like that answer so took them to another person a day later. They said they fit through the little slot they use and they would need to be hand cancelled but could go for $.59. That was a saving of $1 per envelope....so try again!!!! We were able to get the heart stamps in that amount.

those custom sites have set increments. I know because my son''s bar mitzvah invite is a 7 by 7 square and has very heavy beveled paper. I need 1.85 in postage and there is no such amount. You can get a .90 some cent increment off of photostamps.com. I have to do two increments and put two stamps on my envelopes, not ideal, but there is not really another choice.

It seems mailing procedures totally depend on the post office.

We had our invites delivered to NY since we were staying there for a couple of weeks and wanted to hand them out to some of our guests ourselves. Afterwards we went to the post office in my old hometown and we were told our square envelopes would cost $.79 to ship. I assumed they''d print out postage and take care of it but instead the kid behind the counter started trying to find the prettiest stamps he could that would equal the .79 cents that we needed. At one point he tried to talk me into two fruits and a panther and I just about died laughing hehe. Luckily we had gone to school together and he was very nice so we chatted while he helped us put one of the .82 green heart stamps on each envelope (I told him I was more than willing to overpay to get the nicer stamp and it took some convincing but he finally agreed).

When we got back to TX Nate went to the post office to mail the rest and they took care of the postage for him, no stamps necessary.

You could always try another post office to see if they use stamps or print the postage themselves
