Storm is ripping my roof off!

Seriously, I live in the Northeast where we typically don''t see weather this serious. We watched in awe as our neighbors roof come off in a single sheet. Then we saw shingles in our driveway...ugh! Water is coming in through the attic. We called our insurance company and we''ll hear from an adjuster on Monday. We called several roofers - one answered and for a mere $475 they''ll basically throw a tarp up there...yeah, thanks.

Shoot. I laid awake through pars of the night up here in Ontario hearing the wind and rain going wild (extra loud since we have a vent from the gas fireplace in our bedroom to the outside), and with the occasional crazy blast actually shaking the house (it''s got 3 stories). Scary. Hope you don''t lose more of your roof and can get it fixed quickly before much more damage takes place!

My husband tarps people''s roofs as a courtesy. I''m shocked that a roofer would charge someone $475.- to throw a tarp on your roof. Brass you-know-whats!

The amount of rain we got today is unreal. Lots of flooded roads. It was windy this morning but apparently nowhere near as windy as it is/was in your area. Hopefully, the wind has died down now and the rain has stopped so there is no further damage for you.

$475 for a tarp... that''s just crazy. Did you have to do it? Is it still rainy/wiindy or has it stopped?

Thanks for your concern guys. It is really scary. I made my DH agree to set the alarm for the middle of the night to check the attic. Thank goodness we have the walk up attic so hopefully we can catch the water before is does any damage to our upstairs ceiling. So far buckets and tubs are catching what''s coming in. I think we''re gonna pass on the emergency repair so long as we''re able to keep this under control. There''s no guarantee our insurance company will pay for that...or any of this for that matter.

Gemgirl, i figured it would be cheap or a courtesy with the idea that I would then hire them for the repair but I guess not!

We recently watched the skies light up for about an hour as electrical transformers blew left and right. On top of that, I live on the water and we have the water up past the bulkheads with swells about five times the normal height...it''s scary out there!

Seriously Puppmom, I am so sorry you having to go through this stress. I so understand your situation and have been there myself. As others mentioned, stay safe, and DRY, hopefully the worst has passed for you. We are all thinking of you! Hoping for the best!

I live in the same place and the sumps have been pumping their little hearts out for the last 24 hrs. We''ve got to do a good clean up outside when this is over.

Straight line winds and toad-strangler rains just suck, no matter what generates them.

I dread the spring here, truly. And it (meaning my perception, not the weather itself - the weather has always been what it is) didn''t used to be so bad, but May 3rd, 1999 changed all that. After that tornado outbreak, our weather guys lost their minds. They got all new toys and now they preempt programming to follow storms for houuuuuuuurs and houuuuuuurs, down to the freakin'' street level. It''s a ratings battle and it just pisses me off. Not because of the program preemption, but it''s like they''re crying wolf all night long. "OMG!! THERE''S A RAINDROP IN MCCURTAIN COUNTY, AND WE''RE TRACKING IT FOR YOU!!!!!" And the storm chasers. Jeez, don''t get me started. I think they go overboard a lot and get people more upset and churned up than they should. They provide an invaluable function truly, but I think the level of coverage is waaaay over the top anymore.

For those who don''t know (which I expect is most) May 3rd, was one of the biggest tornado outbreaks in...maybe ever. More large tornadoes spun up here than even residents could imagine. One F5 scraped Bridgecreek and Moore Oklahoma (near to and part of our metro area) down to the concrete. The only way you could see that houses had existed, were the driveways and streets. The GRASS was scoured off. The tornado was 3/4 of a mile wide and tracked for hours across many multiple counties. Unfortunately it was only the largest of several really monster, long-track twisters. I''ve lived here all my life, and take the risk in stride, but that one pretty much is seared in my brain.

Hope the storms stop and give you guys time to get your roof back in shape. Hopefully it''ll just be a repair, and not a full new roof.

This did give me a laugh this morning and I needed it. I just checked and the tubs in the attic still seem to be catching everything and the rain is supposed to taper off soon.

I''ve never submitted an insurance claim before - I have a feeling I''m in for a big headache!

For those of you who live in areas that suffer this kind of storm regularly, I don''t know how you do it! Man, this is stressful.

I''m feeling better today about the situation. I''m in *go* mode. I''ve contacted several roofers and have a few estimates scheduled. We won''t hear from the insurance adjuster until tomorrow but we''re full speed ahead. This roof needs to be fixed regardless of who''s paying for it.

Pupp! OMG I hope you and your family are OK! Things have been absolutely nasty here in the Boston area. One suburb (Waltham) reported getting 7" of rain yesterday alone.

HH, I saw the forecast in Boston looked worse than here. Stay safe! We only got(haha - I said ONLY) about 3.5" of rain. It was the wind that really did us in.

We just met with our first roofer who said we have a couple of choices - he can repaired the affected area for about $400 - he''s not sure how this would impact our claim if he does it BEFORE an adjuster gets out here. He could put a tarp over it but nailing a tarp up isn''t ideal. Last, we could wait for the insurance company or hire a public adjuster.

Sooo..we called the insurance company and they said the area has been declared a catastrophe so it would be 3 days or 3 WEEKS until an adjuster gets out here.

We can have the work done and "they''ll apply it to our claim" - what the heck does that mean? How are we supposed to know what we''ll be covered? How are they going to know what they''ll cover if we get the work done now BEFORE they see the damage? What if decide we need a whole new roof and they say we only needed to patch it? This is frustrating!

Okay...deep breathe. If the area has been declared a catastrophe, there are probably people much worse off than we are...unless that''s just an insurance company''s way of saying "we got a lot of claims, so this is gonna take a while."

Pupp, could you take pictures or have an independent adjuster come out and inspect your roof? Spring in NE is not the time to have roof damage go unaddressed and if for some reason there''s additional damage done due to you not taking care of it, the insurance company could turn around and claim you were negligent.

We made it through OK and it''s sunny outside right now (YAY!). The river behind our house is very high, but about 20 feet or so from causing real problems. We did however have to drive through several flooded areas to get to work this morning. I thought my little Camry was going to float away at one point and we couldn''t even get into the local Dunkin Donuts for coffee because they had about a foot of standing water in their parking lot.

HH, you''re right. We need to protect our house from further damage. As you can imagine, roofers in our area are pretty busy so we''ll gather a handful of estimates and go from there. My worry is the insurance company will see that patch as a permanent fix but we''ll have to cross that bridge when we get there.

Good idea to have the roofers take pictures because I sure as hell ain''t climbing up there!

Funny thing - when we got the mail yesterday, there was a business card from a local roof in there! What opportunists.

OK...today is Thursday, the 18th. On Saturday, the 13th I went down to Greenwich Point and enjoyed looking at the wild waves during the rain and wind storm. It was incredibly beautiful. Spray and sand were blowing across the roads. The water was bottle green. Then at 7:00 PM we lost electricity. (I lost the Internet shortly before that.) We did not get electricity back until mid-day yesterday, which was Wednesday, March 17. I didn't get a chance to go back on-line until today, Thursday, March 18! So puppmom's storm is the same storm that hit me!

My father has lived in this house since my brother was born: 56 years ago. He said he has never seen a storm like this. Greenwich cancelled school all week this week, although they did it in stages (one day at a time until on Wednesday afternoon the Superintendant of Schools just decided that both Thursday and Friday the schools would be closed). There are too many roads blocked by downed trees and too many parts of town with with no power!

It was 52 degrees in the house the other day and sleeping was cold!

Scary stuff Puppmom.. The suggestion for photo''s to be taken by whoever is up on the roof, is a great one. We went through a storm in our little town in November 2008. We were lucky in that our roof sheets (iron) managed to only lift a little, but they got hammered by the tennis sized hailstones. The house across the road had it''s roof peeled off, and landed 2 houses down. We were without power for 23 hours and 45 minutes. I argued with our insurance company for far too long, and we finlly settled with them 1 day before the 12 month anniversary! Anyway, I don''t know how things work in your part of the world with insurance claims/assessors/companies, but maybe start keeping a record of when you call, who you speak to, what it was about etc.. just in case it starts to drag out a little?

Hope you have your roof all fixed asap.

Scary! I hope your house and everyone in it is ok! I live in Santa Cruz and it''s been a sunny 72 degrees here all week. But then again, when I was 12 years old about 40 buildings in town collapsed in the Loma Prieta earthquake. We don''t get much weather here, but we have other stuff. That''s California for ya.
