So, I am on the fence about the whole stimulus cheque thing, but since we got it, is anyone using it for jewelry purchases, or are y'all banking it? That is, assuming you don't need it for home repairs etc...

Omg you're so lucky haha I wouldn't mind a stimulus cheque to spend on jewellery :evil2::evil2::evil2:

What is a stimulus cheque?

It's a COVID relief check sent to US Americans and persons living in America making less than 75,000/150,00 a couple. Designed to help people make it through these times. Also to keep the economy boosted. It's happened three times since COVID. This check is 1,400.

I’m planning to pay off my car insurance for the year and stock the kitchen if I get one. Boring!

We will not get any such animal.

Paying off the last of our credit card debt. We should have never had it in the first place but live and learn.

I sure hope the checks are going to the people who really need it to pay outstanding debt, rent/food etc.....and not going towards jewelry purchases! Ducks head.....

I would think so.. these are given according to income

The last one was spent on car repairs.
This time, it goes into my checking account, probably for the upcoming car insurance bill.
So yeah, the car makes sure that I have no extra $$$.

I just wondered. Ours will pay for a generator we got and a hot water heater (we think the power failures did something) plus we need a new AC...Not using it for jewelry. But everyone should spend it as they see fit...one thing I am not is a financial advisor!

You’d be surprised how many people around these parts who are heirs to huge inheritances and businesses abroad who claim to have little or no income in the US. If these people are getting stimulus checks, I hope they are giving back to food banks and other charitable organizations. Getting off soap box.

I would like to add this tidbit.
Does the US government think that people who make $75k/year are hurting?
Cause if I made 75k/yr, I'd think I was rich.
Those senators are all out of touch with the working class.

Also, the basing stimulus checks on prior year's tax return is a not smart at all. How many Unemployed, homeless people file tax returns? I had a couple of friends (single moms) who made over 75K in 2019 and lost their jobs in 2020. Guess what? they didn't qualify for the first 2 stimulus checks, and did they need it? Most certainly, to keep up with mortgage payments, keep their kids fed, keep utilities on so their kids could go to school online.....

I always joke that I am the poorest PS’er. People would probably be shocked at our income that supports four people. We have never gotten any type of government assistance either. I really have no business being on a luxury forum of any kind ;)

Oh honey, I will fight you for that title!

I agree but I know lots of people getting the stimulus payments that are working full time and don’t “need “ the money. That being said, if they want to buy something from a retail business that may be struggling, I can’t disagree with that.

I fall into this category. I was underemployed or unemployed for half of 2020, but since they based the first 2 rounds of stimulus on 2019 tax returns I got almost nothing. I just rushed to file my 2020 taxes in the HOPES! of getting in on this latest round, but I know I will have to file an amended return in the future, because of the changes they're making to to federal taxes on unemployment payments which aren't finalized yet. It's a huge PITA.

Also, please pass this info along to your friends who didn't receive previous stimulus payments, even though they should have qualified. They may be able to receive a credit on their tax return.

The stimulus check is not entirely need-based. In fact, to think so is a misunderstanding.

They are dispersed in order to "stimulate" the economy. No one should judge or finger-wag at anyone based on how they spend it. Whether it is for savings, utility, survival, or to buy a trinket otherwise un-purchased.

Given how much COVID-19 put so many businesses in a tailspin, let's thank our lucky stars that there are enough people who will get these checks who have disposal income to keep certain businesses alive, and consequently their employees employed. While jewelry may seem frivolous, it isn't to the small-time jewelry business who needs those sales to keep their lights on and water running.

I don't mean to give a lecture...but more so to share a different POV.

COL varies though. I was reading something about people who make $90-something thousand/year being considered low income in HI. And obviously there are more expensive cities (San Francisco, NYC, etc).

I live near Seattle and while $75k is def comfortable if you don’t live in Seattle itself, I’m betting that changes dramatically for people who have kids. Daycare is the entire stimulus check for some. My
coworker was paying regular rates while her kid was at home so she could save his spot in case he had to go back for a bit there.

I’m going to agree with @Cerulean here. People will pay bills or buy stuff, hopefully helping companies that have had less cash flow in the past year.

Depends on where you live. 75 a year in NYC...you might have a room mate or 2. Same with Boston,San Fran or other places in California, ....there are people making 6 figures living in their car.... some places are just expensive to live.

Its a bit of a yes and no thing, and they have to cast the widest net possible. Also lets remember that some of those people though they made have made money last year, might not be making a dime now.

You pay tax dont you ?
So Just enjoy it

I think for the sake of the economy its important to spend it and help keep workers in jobs

The idea didn't develop into anything here

$75k qualifies as low income for certain housing in the areas surrounding Seattle. Expenses are crazy! At a different time in my life, I was looking at daycares in the $1,800-3,000 per child per month range. Absolutely astonishing how expensive that is!
