Does anyone have this? I''d never heard of it before today, but found a local place that does it while searching for a regular asphalt place. We''re in dire need of having our driveway redone. It''s currently concrete, but the first concrete quote has come in at $22k

(It''s not even that big!) so we''re looking into asphalt. Someone is supposed to call me back to set up a time where they can come out and give us a quote, but the woman on the phone assured me that it''s still much cheaper than concrete. I''m thinking it could be a good alternative to just plain asphalt, but I''m having a hard time finding any information on it from places that aren''t trying to sell it.

I''ve never heard of stamped asphalt but I did learn in a construction class that generally Asphalt has no structural stability.

Concrete can bear a load but asphalt ultimately cannot. Asphalt is good for making something smooth but it ends up with many dents and potholes.

Also, its not so great to use form an environmental standpoint. It''s made from crude petroleum.

Definitely ask about the stability... there are some different variations and methods that may make it stronger.

do you have to remove the concrete prior to applying the asphalt? if so, the $22k for what you really want may not be unreasonable.

Thanks for the input Oobiecoo! I''ll definitely ask about stability. What type of driveway options are greener than asphalt? i''m guessing concrete is, but I really don''t know. I hate to say it, but if it comes down to a huge price difference, we just can''t afford to choose environmentally friendly over thrifty. $22k is just not doable for us.

Movie Zombie, the $22k quote was to have it redone in concrete. I''m guessing they''d have to remove the old concrete no matter what we have done, but I really don''t know. DH was there when the guy came to give the quote since he works from home now. I''ll rip it up myself if it''ll make it cheaper! LOL.

What part of the country are you in? And do you know the size and shape of the driveway? I have a construction estimator book and may be able to tell you how much they *should* be charging. Oh, and do you know what psi concrete they are using? And if they are building it to the minimum requirements in your city or if they are going above and beyond the minimums? Those would all factor into the price.

Whats wrong with your driveway now?

I''m in the Pittsburgh, PA area. I don''t know the size and I''m horrible at estimating, but I''d say it''s 3-3.5 car lengths long. We have a 2-car garage, but the driveway is only wide enough for about one car length from the garage. We also have a little area that juts out to the right a bit more so that when I back out of the right side of the garage I use it to turn around if that makes sense.

I have no idea what PSI they''re using or if they''re building just to minimum requirements. Who knew getting driveway estimates depended on so many factors!

.

I''m not sure when the driveway was last redone, but everything except the very bottom section is in awful condition. It''s bad enough that I''m worried that we''ll have a very difficult time shoveling in the winter because it''s so uneven right now.

$22K sounds really high if it is just plain concrete. (Stamped concrete is quite expensive.) We had a smaller driveway (about 1 car length long by 3 car widths wide) demo''d and re-poured, plus a 15'' x 15'' back patio demo''d and re-poured, plus planting beds cut out of the concrete front patio (previous owner was a concrete nut) for about $5K in San Diego.

Kay, was that recently? The quote we got was just for regular old concrete. We''re waiting on another concrete quote as well as the stamped asphalt and a regular asphalt one.

Fi and I are currently building a house. We're very fortunate to have family friends where the husband is a contractor and the wife is a real estate agent. We're saving about $30,000 by having them build it instead of purchasing a newly built home by someone else. We were told it would be $20,000 to have a concrete driveway poured. I'm pretty bummed because that will put us over budget (say, $20,000 over budget. lol).

Apparently here you purchase the concrete by the yard. So, what ever the space you're going to concrete over times whatever the by-the-yard price is.Our driveway wouldn't be that big either, and $20,000 sounds outrageous. I just don't want a drive way of crush-and-run rock.

Know any way i can make $20,000 in the next 3 months?

Nope, but if you come up with one, let me know!

i am not up on current concrete prices. the 20k sounds high but everything is these days. i would take a measurement of the area and have the number of yards figured. i can tell you that i think a concrete driveway is a real asset to property and if you can swing it i would try to go for it. i much prefer the look of concrete in most applications.

my parents had a concrete driveway for many years and when it showed some wear they were offered a good price to put asphalt on it. they agreed and it was a big mistake. the asphalt needs to be coated (yearly i believe) and that is a messy job of rolling on a black nasty product. over time it just seems to deteriorate. several years ago they had it removed and new cement put in. it sure does look better. i also think that you get heat off of the asphalt. my mother noticed that the temperature on her indoor/outdoor thermometer that was placed outside a window on the driveway side was always higher.

It was October 2005.
