strmrdr:
I lost a powerpoint presentation file at the end of the day on Thursday, in exactly the same way that luckystar112 lost a word file a few months ago:

I opened the file from an email, and a co-worker and I spent well over an hour tweakin, revising, and reworking. I was saving frequently because my mouse was giving me problems. However, in the rush to get this done at the end of our shortened wowrkweek, I forgot to save it to a permanent file, but kept working in the temporary file!
I went back after hours and tried everything I know to recover the file -- I checked recent documents, retraced my steps, checked every visible nook and cranny of my hard drive, used the search function every which way.
When luckystar ran into the same problem, you suggested:
thing you can do is go to run and type %temp% and look there.
Could you please tell me how I "go to run"?
Many thanks!
