So, after having lived in our "new" home for almost a year now, we still hadn't had our place sorted out properly, there were so many things left undone, granted they were not big big things, but enough to bug me

. I got really fed up with DH not doing these things and also not being able to get handymen to do them (" job too small, gov", or the Singlish equivalent, LOL). I decided to take some things into my own hands and also "threatened" DH that if he wansn't going to tackle them, I would and if something went wrong, he wouldn't be able to blame me, LOL.

After having spent a month or so helping some friends sort out their accounting system and dealing with our place in the UK (you wouldn't believe the hassle we or rather *I" have been through) as well as taking care of my dad, I finally got some time to myself . The following are what I actually did all by myself:

1) paint the ceiling upstairs (boy, my neck aches just thinking about it - it took me a looongg time) and I had to overcome my fear of vertigo to climb up the ladder. Also, repainted the spare bedroom and several other walls in the house.

2) sand the staircase railing and re-varnish it (boy, my nails are reaaaally suffering). It looks almost as good as new.

3) kill the spiders and get rid of the web, EVERYWHERE!! and I am absolutely TERRIFIED of the darn creatures!!

In addition, I've bullied DH to put up the glass shelf, mirror, toilet roll holder and towel ring in our guest bathroom.

Next are the glass shelf, mirror and towel ring in our master bathroom and then all the glass shower screens. Now, the shower screens are going to be a real challenge but we're so determined to get them done.

I am so proud of us!!

. Hubby said "who would've thought a dainty little thing like you was capable of these things"!!

. I told him I'd practically painted, wall-papered and planted all the flowers and plants in my first home (a 6-bedroom house with a 100-ft long garden) in London and now does he believe me, finally?!!

YAY Congrats! I have to do the same thing this weekend. I moved in with FI last March and our rec room is full of my crap. I have to get it pulled together for family to come for Turkey-Day next week. This involves putting up shelves, installing our surround sound, painting, and general unpacking and organizing.

Good for you Lien, sometimes a good shove works. LOL What a nice feeling to know its done now.

We have so much still do to around our place & have been here for over 3 yrs. But to give you 2 examples of how I took matters into my own hands, I picked the paint colours for the entire house (2,00 sq.ft so not an easy task), trotted off to a store that was having Benjamin Moore Heritage paint on sale, about $18 dollars off a gallon (couldn''t pass that up). Well, $1800 later I come home with a trunk full of paint & supplies. LOL LOL My hubby was like ahhhhh, did we talk about this? I said yes, dont you see my face is blue!

I made him drag the paint to the basement till we got started.

THEN I called in my father (who is retired) to come help me & he did most of our house. The rest, I made my hubby deal with it & the lazy guy hired a duo team to finish it up. Fine, I paid for the paint. LOL Worked for me & the house is done.

Voila...no more arguments.

Next thing I did was call a company called "MR. Handyman Connection". Was fed up hearing how 4 new faucets were going to take "my entire weekend off to do". YA...whatever. So my Mr.Handyman came out & 3 hours & $225 later, I had 4 new faucets installed. When DH came home, he was surprised & angry I just did it. I told him it''s a b****
to have a wife that can make decisions & have a job to pay for them too. LMAO He got over it when he realized I was right. Hmmm, always works out better when he admits I''m always right.

He just gets scared now that if he doesnt do what I ask, it WILL get done one way or another. I''m very resourceful. LOL Ya buddy, too bad I lived on my own for 10yrs before I got married.

Not to threadjack, but ladies, check your yellow pages under "handyman", I''m pretty sure that every city/country has one advertised. Very HANDY. LOL

There is a huge sense of satisfaction when you complete projects around the house. Good for you! It''s a wonderful feeling, isn''t it? Makes your home feel like "yours."

YAY, good for you! I have some similar tales to tell re some stuff around the house. What is it abt men and putting off doing things around the house?! I tell you, if I could pay for handymen to come and sort out all the oustanding stuff, i''d do it in a heartbeat! The construction and general handy work industries in S''pore are having a boom at the moment, everyone is fully booked several months ahead and nobody wants to take on little jobs worth only a few hundred dollars so it''s down to moi and my ability to both do the work and to bully hubby into the things I can''t do myself. Unfortunately, hubby hurt his back rather badly at the weekend so putting up shower screens is out for a while and I just can''t put the darn things up myself. Also, as I get older, my body is not as resilient as what it once was. When I was 29 and doing all the things I mentioned (cos I was too poor after having paid for the deposit and the renovation), I was able to go on and on for days. Now, after one day of work aroudn the house, I need at least 2 days to recover and rest this tired 41 (almost 42) year-old body, LOL!

Congratulations on getting your major project list almost completed. Don''t you just love that feeling of satisfaction? I hate having stuff half done in my house. I''ve been working on my master bedroom remodel for about 6 weeks now. I only have weekends to do it and lots of other things have been on the weekend to-do list too. This past weekend I put the curtain rods back up and hung pictures. I still need to do a final coat of paint on the crown molding but that probably won''t happen for at least another week and it was driving me crazy to have the pictures and curtains laying around.

My husband is very good at helping with household projects. Every weekend we make a list of all the "home" chores we want to do. We never finish the list but at least we work from it. I try to knock off the really simple quick things because those are the things that drive me the most nuts...if it only takes 10 minutes then just get it done!

I have also found a guaranteed way to get the house really clean. Invite some of my husband''s friends over for dinner. He cleans like a maniac when friends or family are coming. The house gets spotless and all I have to do is cook and entertain for one night. The deep housecleaning that hubby does for this lasts for weeks!

Thank you, IslandDreams. Well done to you also for doing those things in yr house. It does drive me crazy to have things half done or have things lying around that you KNOW should not take more than 10-15 mins. My DH is the master of putting things off, no matter how small.

Can I please borrow yr husband?

. It's so funny cos I've done the same thing. I've invited friends round for dinner but I still have to bully hubby into doing the work cos "otherwise, they'd think we're so lazy/ we live like peasants (no offense to peasants!! LOL) with all sorts of things lying around undone". But then, I still have to clean and cook!! Good thing DH has other good points!
