This is the first time I have ever worked in jewelry store/retail environment & I'm trying to find out if the way the store operates is standard. The store (Located in a casino) sells sterling silver & fashion jewelry some of it is in display cases most of it isn't. During business hours every single piece of jewelry in display or not is hand counted. The owner uses an old cash register where if an item is 13.00 you have to type in $13.00 nothing is scanned. Is this typical?

I worked in a mid-range mall jewelry store in college. We hand counted the pieces and had to enter in the dollar amounts manually.

We didn''t sell silver or fashion jewelry, though. It was all gold or platinum, and it was all in cases.

I don''t know what is typical, but that was my experience.

Haven thanks for answering! =) There is just so much stuff to count & it is spread out all over the store. Counting is done while the store is open so, I'll be at 260 of something customer comes in so I stop & wind up losing the number/piece I left off. I feel like such a dummy having to start over.

Love the job though I enjoy selling, helping customers find their sparklies & such. I guess if it was my store i'd want retail software, top of the line register, wireless scanner whatever I would need to avoid human error.

Counting while people are there must he really difficult! We always counted right before open as we were putting the pieces out, and then right after close while we were putting everything back.

Have fun working there! I always loved selling engagement rings to the young men, they were usually so nervous.

I worked in a department store jewelry (ten years ago) so its going to be a little different for me. everything was scanned and had description to every piece regardless of the item cost. The only items we counted as it was rather cumbersome were precious stone items (which were only sapphire, rubies and emeralds- at the time), certified diamonds and a handful of diamond jewelry over a certain $. We counted right before opening and again at closing then it gets locked away in a safe. I can''t remember how often we counted the entire inventory I think it was yearly though and that was a chore with several employees. I really loved working there, it was a fun job while I was in high school.

I''ve worked in department stores as well as independent/mom&pops. As far as the latter, I don''t think it''s typical to count while the store is open, but the manual entering of dollar amounts is. Only certain items were locked away at night in the dept. stores, but everything was vaulted in the indie store.

Thanks Haven, D&T, & Monarch. I''ve been out of work for a few years taking care of my kiddo so I''m trying to get back in to the swing of things. Working directly with the public is a heck of a lot better than talking to them on the phone that is for sure! Haven the men are funny. They don''t know what to get at all & will usually just buy the first thing I suggest.
