I got married last Wed. and I''m working on getting my name changed on pertinent documents. So far I still have my original marriage license that I''ve just been showing and most places give it back, they just want to look at it. Today I''m going to have it filed with the clerk''s office. Here''s my question. When you go to order your new social security card do they keep a copy of your marriage license or just check to see that you have it. When I file ours today I''m going to get 2 or 3 certified copies, just trying to decide how many to get. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

I was in IL - to get my new social security card, I first went to the DMV with my marriage certificate and got my name changed on a new DL. Then I took the new DL to the social security office (I think with the certificate also) and they sent me a new card a few weeks later. I was really surprised how easy that part was.

Oops - sorry, I didn't answer your ?. They just look at it and hand it back. No filing.

I think it''s different in every state...I know when we got our marriage license we also got instructions on changing our name with the ss office, and in PA we have to mail in a certified copy of the license.

I''d get a couple certified licenses. It''s always easier to get them now than find out you need them later and don''t have them, there were a few places that wanted certified copies for us.

It''s definitely different by state. I was in CA and I went down to the SS office with just a piece of paper from the county clerk (my real marriage license hadn''t even come in yet). The clerk gave me a piece of paper specifically for the SS office so that I could change my name on my SS card. Changing my name on my SS card made life so much easier. After I did that, I was able to change mostly everything else. Hope this helps!

The SS office will hand it back to you, but the passport office requires you to send it in. I''d get a few copies, just to make life easier.
