Oh wow. When I first started reading this thread, I thought that it was a diamond 3ct blue diamond we were talking about.

I pray that this all turns out well for you though. It will probably get there fine. I posted on here many times with my concerns when I was having my future wife''s engagement ring made. It can definitely help to calm you down and gives much needed reassurance.

In my experience it is not unusual for registered mail to take 7 to 10 days, and I have seen some packages take up to 14 days.

Rich I always remember a post of yours from years back about reg mail, it greatly reassured me when I needed it and I always think of it when others are in a similar situation - thank you!

I believe Registered Mail can be combined with both First-Class Mail and Priority Mail. In the future, you may want to combine it with Priority Mail, which only takes 2-3 days.

We have done this before and it does make things go much more quickly. I hope your package has not been lost, pierrone!

Thanks Lorelei. I should have mentioned that usually it seems to take 3 to 5 days, depending on what part of the country it's shipped from. Sometimes I've had in-state items make it to me in 2 days. But again, 7 to 10 days is not unusual.

I was not aware that you could combine Priority and Registered until I saw Shrute's post. Sounds like that would be a real plus, if it works.

I gave up mailing packages through the US Postal Service years ago. I just couldn't handle the long lines. Here in Sarasota you've almost always got a 15 to 20 minute wait, minimum. I use Fedex for everything now.

An interesting sidenote- In 30 years of shipping packages, I've only had one loss, which was a Registered Mail loss. The Postal Service paid within 60 days with very little hassle.

Yes, I''m sure the package will arrive safely. Not to worry. I once thought a very small registered package was lost on its way to
my p.o box, but was later found stuck behind the clerks desk. I was relieved, but it was a 12 day ordeal from NY to Boston.
Like Rich, I use FedEx exclusively with declared value exception insurance as needed and have never had a loss..fingers crossed.

Hi pierreone,

Just got back from a long weekend away with my daughter. I would not be worried at all at this point. This is not the first time that there has been absolutely no activity in the USPS tracking system and a package is safely delivered to us. I will let you know the MINUTE it shows up.

Hi, pierreone.

This actually happened to me the other day. Although it was the other way around, with the seller sending the stone to us. The tracking said that they''ve attempted delivery, and that I should arrange for a re-delivery or pick it up. But when we checked with them, the package wasn''t there at all. They were very helpfull, called the central office, and even the postman who was on duty that day. They looked everywhere for 2 days (during the weekend) with no positive result. We left a number for them to contact us if they found it, and they gave us a number to call first thing Monday morning to escalate the report and for them to start an investigation.

When we made the call on Monday, we were asked to assume the worst and that it was stolen, or lost (it was insured). They were going to involve the police later that day if nothing happened. About half an hour after that we received a call from them saying that the package had been found. It was a very innocent (but nerve wrecking) incident, where the package fell to another person''s box. The honest box owner deserved an applaud for being honest and returning the package to the post office.

It was a happy ending for me. The staff at USPS were very helpfull, and they responded really quickly. Have your paperwork ready to aid the investigation (if necessary) so you''d save some time. I hope your package turns up soon.

Does this really work? I recall reading in RT that it doesn’t because Registered is under lock and key all the way so going Priority would not make any difference.

Oops, looks like this thread got moved. Didn''t mean to post in the wrong forum.

Anyway, great news! Just got a call from the post office, and the package has arrived in Houston. WHEW! Sorry for the premature freakout, but thanks for all the reassurances.

SO happy to hear it. YAY! Can''t wait to see the final product.

No need to apologize. If their tracking system worked like a normal one does, and the workers you spoke with weren't imbeciles, there wouldn't have been a freak out in the first place. I would have freaked too by the way, if I didn't already know how lousy things can go.

I am SO happy for you!!

Please come back with pics when this is done, I really want to see it.

p.s. Just a thought, since you've had trouble with this office before, maybe use a different one the next time.

hi pierreone :) just some info for next time...

i had a package (ring) from PA to NY sent registered mail, and the status was NEVER updated for the full 2 weeks it took to get there (and, frankly, i coulda walked from PA to NY in that time!). apparently, packages that start with a certain letter combination don't get updates, and mine was one of these. there is NO indication of this on the USPS website and i assumed that the status updates applied to all packages, but they don't. i called and spoke to a supervisor who explained this to me - that it was only packages with a tracking number starting with certain letters. i can't recall what got one package graded one way and a different package graded another way. but as i said, mine was a ring also, and it didn't get the status it needed for the sort of grading that gets daily updates.

you should have been told that when you went to enquire, but i hope this makes next time less harrowing!

I wondered about this too Chrono as I didn''t think it sounded right, so I had my hubby, who works for the PO, ask one of the clerks. He even printed that page out and took it in. The clerk said it would already be considered FC and PM, and that it does not move it any faster (and if someone tells you that, it''s wrong). It can''t, because of how it''s handled. Apparently they just got lucky with the delivery time. As did I when I sent things to WF from IL, they got there in two days, as did a shipment to FL. However, OH and NY took way longer, with NY taking almost 11 days.

yep, doesn't make a difference (only monetary difference), Actually the two times I sent registered mail first time I sent priority, and got there in 5 business day. The second time I sent First Class mail registered and got there in three business days

they were both to WF, but leaving from different Postal Hub (which was only five miles apart from each other since I finally figured out which office was closer to my work). No idea why there was such a delay on the first but not the second?

YAY....thank goodness the package made it!!!!

I am SO Happy that your package arrived safely. I surely didn''t want you to have to go through, what Freke did.
Please post a lot of pictures, when your gorgeous ring is done. I know it will be beautiful.

Hi nyc, how would that be? USPS is the only one who ships things under lock and key.

What is up with USPS?! I''m glad everything arrived safe and sound, but really...after my ordeal, I''m not sending anything through them again unless it''s got a bajillion dollars worth of insurance on it. At least yours didn''t take a month and a half and having to involve the dang postal inspector!

Meh.

NO. DO NOT USE FED EX for jewelry.

Jewelers can use it cause they have separate private insurance. Same as my company does, to cover for loss. Fed ex is not that reliable AT ALL otherwise.

I got an email from Lesley yesterday that the post office did not deliver it to them. She mentioned that if it doesn''t show up today, she would actually go to the station (wow, that seems way above the call of duty.) I haven''t heard from her yet today, so I don''t know if it showed up or not.

Freke, I read all about your postal nightmare. I would have been a furious basketcase. Glad it worked out.

threadjack...

I know you posted briefly about your Pyrenees...but one picture is simply not enough! Please distract yourself from your post office woes and post some more pictures of your cutie in another thread! He''s adorable!

So glad your stone arrived safe and sound!

Hi Pierreone,
