Like I needed another reason to hate dentist's appointments ....

At the dentist today, my hygienist was lovely. She had good hands, she gave good advice, and she liked jewelry. ;)

She complimented my earrings! By saying, "I love your earrings! They're so pretty! So small! So shiny!"

I like compliments. I like "pretty." I love "shiny!" But ... small? I realize I might be coming off like a dude whose endowment has been insulted, but ... ouch.

Intellectually, I know 1.40 tcw isn't small. Emotionally, my ego smarts a little. And practically? I want earlobe lipo, yo. Y'all ever gotten any compliments of similar ilk?

I once had someone who worked in a jewelry store say, about The Brick, "How cute!"

Cute?

O..........K..........

Circe, don't even think twice about it. Your earrings are LOVELY. And BIG. And *CUTE.*

Ugh, how annoying.

She's probably like that with everyone and everything.

It took me years to stop taking people's insensitivity (or boorishness, or just plain jerkiness) personally. I learned they're that way with everyone.

She probably blurts out nonsense to everybody. And she was probably jealous, and threw in the last bit as a barb.

just be glad you don't have to live with her.

1.4 isn't small. That's the truth of it.

I would be miffed too. 1.40 ctw is NOT small, by any means! perhaps she is used to seeing the huge CZs

Are you sure she was referring to all of your earings when she said that? Didnt you recently get two sets of additional holes (which have smaller studs in them -- which I  BTW),.. I am thinking maybe she was reffering to those?
I cant see how anyone would call 1.4 tcw small... but maybe she really is that dense, haahaa

She was on my right side, where I had to yank the studs to get them repierced (going tomorrow, yay!), so while she could have been speaking generally ... I'm guessing it was the studs that got the compliments. The little stars, Mozart or no Mozart, sadly do not twinkle - so no shininess there!

I'm not massively miffed or anything, just kind of "Dangit!" at my great big fleshy lobes. That said, in a world where The Brick gets tagged as cute, it's obvious a lot of people just don't think before they speak!

Um yeah your earrings are not small-she either wasn't thinking or the green-eyed monster got the best of her. Or maybe she was impressed with how sparkly they were considering their size? (Trying to help her out!) Who knows...people say the weirdest stuff when it comes to diamonds and jewelry!

I think she probably meant that they r incredibly sparkly for their size. Mosg ppl aren't used to seeing such well cut stones!

I think it was either in regards to a great cut in a small stone, as aforementioned in this thread. OR She's so used to seeing honking fakeys that yours really do appear small to her. Either way, You have some beautiful stones and I would gladly take them if they're too "small" for you! :naughty:

People say such goofy things sometimes. Honestly, what she said doesn't even make any sense! She clearly liked the earrings and was very complimentary about them, so I don't think she'd deliberately throw in an insult. I really think she was trying to convey that they have a lot of sparkle and it just came out wrong. Sounds to me like she just wasn't really thinking about what she was saying. No way are your earrings small!

Sorry, but she sounds inconsiderate and immature. Maybe she was thrown off by the bezel. I have small :naughty: bezels and the low setting can look less impressive from the side. Especially if one is used to seeing honker CZ studs erupting from the earlobe.

People are weird.

My ring got called both "dainty" and "the blingiest ring I've ever seen" within days of each other. Both people were talking about the same 1 ct ring.

I have to say, I really don't mind what people say, as long their tone is not rude.

Anyway Circe, I'll raise you.

My sister took one look at the three stone ring in my avatar, screwed up her face and declared "it looks fake!"

She couldn't have sounded more jealous if she tried. I ignored her coz I couldn't care less.

What do you wanna bet? Good point! Blow her off. (But I'd kind of squirm too, silly chick.)

Have we had a thread here yet about "weird 'compliments' you've received on your jewelry," if not, let's start one.

For me, I used to hear a lot of comments that my engagement ring was "cute." It was smallish by American standards, a .68 pear-shaped diamond that I have since turned into a pendant. Puppy dogs are cute, I would like a different adjective used for my ring, please.

Oddly, a hygienist once grabbed my hand that was draped across my chest as I sat in the exam chair and said about this ring, "oh my gosh, your husband much love you SO MUCH to buy you a rock like that." Uhhhh, thanks? Anyway, yeah, people are clueless.

I'm realizing now that when I do get my 10 year upgrade engagement ring (in 3.5 years), I'll probably get a lot of "wow, I want one like that, only REAL" and other uninformed statements like that. Not everyone gets it. That's why I'm so grateful for this forum. :praise:

That was my first thought --- that she's used to seeing honkin', ridiculously large fakes. And possibly, that by "small" what she really meant was "appropriately sized"? (I'm probably one of the few people who thinks there is such a thing as a too-large diamond stud - especially for everyday wear.)

Not small at all.... she was probably gasping in admiration, envy and shock

Your earrings are not small at all! Actually Circe, I went back to your SMTR thread of your earrings 3 days ago just to show my sister an example of the most beautiful milgrain bezel earrings. Her comment, "Wow! Those are beautiful and huge."

Wow, that's an annoying and brainless comment!

I swear diamonds are weird-magnets. Wanna see who doesn't think before they speak? Wear jewelry! Works every time, I swear.

I get asked on a pretty much daily basis if my OEC is real. I hear it so much I don't even think twice about it, anymore. (The answer I give varies :naughty: depending on if the person asking freaks me out or not, haha.) I once had one woman flip out- as in get right up in my face and start screaming, when I wouldn't tell her what I paid for it. That was freaky. I was polite the first ten times she asked...

I know I've mentioned it before on PS once, on the last weird-stuff-people-say-about-jewelry discussion probably, but it's the ultimate, never to be topped bizarre comment. When I was at work once a male customer asked me who I'd f*cked to get my e-ring. Wow! (Um, my husband? I did think about saying that briefly, but instead just stared in slack-jawed awe at teh crazy.)

But seriously, your earrings are gorgeous and not a bit small. And why is it dentists and hygienists must start conversations while your mouth is occupied with instrumentation anyway...?

This is why I don't compliment strangers on their jewelry. What is meant as a compliment is often taken offensively. What the hygienist probably meant was that the diamonds were small considering how much sparkle they gave off. She's probably used to seeing huge CZ's that are dull, white and opaque.

Good thing we've got PS to get the REAL compliments from folks who know what they are talking about!!
