"The guys are coming over tomorrow to demo the bathroom."

We had discussed renovating the back bathroom for a little while, but never made any definite plans. Since he didn''t have any work for 2 of his guys today (he owns his own electrical contracting business), he sent them over to demo the bathroom.

It''s pretty hideous, with green and white linoleum floors, some weird green counter top, black tiles in the bath area with handicap bars (for no apparent reason - there are no ramps or any other modifications making it handicap accessible), and a toilet that never stops running (which we suspect has caused a mold/decay problem underneath the flooring). Now that it''s being torn apart, looks like we''ve got some decisions to make!

Tomorrow. Okaaaaay, you have some fast decision making to do!

What are your plans? Oh, and do you have another bathroom in the house? I ask because it could be a day or two at best before that one is useable again.

Good luck, take loads of during and after pics.

I would be excited. If you have the chance tomorrow you could go to home depot and see what they have so that you can get some ideas of what you would like in there. By the time it is ready for any of the fun stuff to pick out to go in you would have had time to decide what you want.

We just renovated a bathroom. It was a huge job. It was supposed to go October to Thanksgiving. It ended New Years eve. You are lucky the guys are coming over to demo... A great project for sure, but it goes on and on.

Good luck with your reno! We''re looking to reno our main bathroom but decided to hold out a little until we have more money saved. Be sure to show us some after pics!

Haha! We did ours just last week!
Sooooooo...do you have a timeline? We just have a small bath and it took all week. We bought everything at lowes and home depot in one day, got nothing special ordered. I picked everything out, and pretty much everything was preassembled.
We found out that our subfloor needed to be replaced, as well as the electric needing to be moved, so it turned out not to be just take one thing out and replace it. And, we also found out that a lot of the newer fittings didn''t fit in older ones.
Keep us updated! Let me know if you have questions...its fun! And I love my new bathroom!

Yay! I love home remodeling! Have you made all your decisions on what''s going in?? I love the black, but I agree with you on the weird green! I feel so lucky that the bathroom in our house was already awesome... we did the kitchen, though!

Also, the "handicap bars" don''t necessarily mean someone wheelchair-bound lived in the house. My father had a mini-stroke two years ago, and although he recovered almost fully, his left leg is not quite up to par, so he can be a little unstable on occasion. My parents installed a second banister on all the staircases in the house for him to hold onto, and bars in the shower so he has something to hang onto when getting in/out. :) I bet they''d be helpful for anyone in a similar situation, maybe even including certain muscle/ligament repairing surgeries that keep people from being 100% sure on their feet!

Luckily there''s no rush on decision making. We have 3 full bathrooms, and it''s just the 2 of us living in the house. J''s best friend is a plumber who''s here right now discussing options. He thinks we should change the layout all together...

Could your husband send his guys to my place next? I''ve got a bathroom that''s still stuck in ''Miami Vice'' colors from the 80''s. The bad part is I picked those colors myself. I''ve learned my lesson though. Never go trendy again!

I was going to respond yesterday, but this was my suggestion and decided against posting it since that may have not been what you wanted to hear.

Any pics of post-demo?

We are doing the same thing to our main bathroom this year but DH is doing all the work. Not changing the layout though, but tearing up floor tile, tub tile, new countertop, etc. Honestly, I don''t know where to begin in choosing materials that are going to be inexpensive but look neutral and upscale for resale.

Can''t wait to see what you choose!

Hubby and his (plumber) friend were all gung ho about changing the layout - possibly putting the tub against the wall with the window. But when I asked if the window might need to be moved, it was determined that it would be, and that would mean refinishing & painting the outside of the house, as well as the inside. Seemed like a lot of work for a bathroom that had previously only been used for doggie baths. :)

A new option presented itself, though. The little wall between the tub & toilet will be taken down to about 3 feet, and they will place glass the rest of the way up. That way it will open the space up a little bit to make it appear larger, while keeping water from splashing elsewhere.

Here''s the current state of affairs in our back bathroom.

Wow, looks like you are having fun over there! I like the idea to make it a short wall with glass extension. It will really brightn it up and mae it look bigger like you said. Cant wait for more progress pics!

I agree. Not sure what other layout would work but the glass half wall would let in a ton of light and make the whole space feel more open and bigger.
