Hi everyone! Ive been lurking for about a year (admiring everyones sparklies and getting wedding info) and my fh and I got engaged about 6 months ago (yippee!!). Im finally posting because you ladies in the bridal forum seem very knowledgable, so heres my question. Im looking for a wedding site outdoors in the so cal area, to host an intimate wedding (30 people max) with a formal sit down dinner. Every site I love seems to be geared towards larger weddings? can anyone offer me some suggestions please? thanks

first off, congrats!

i''m not from the so cal area, but i would suggest looking into restaurants with a nice outdoor area. we had a similar question when we first started looking for a venue, but quickly realized that wedding sites are indeed geared towards giant parties. look for less conventional sites, like a favorite restaurant, or an old mansion, etc.

good luck!

Is there any particular area of L.A. that you''re interested in? Beach, Westside, Valley, South Bay.....

crown jewel: thank you for responding! a restaurant sounds like it might be just the trick, will they allow decorations centerpieces etc.?
msb: thanks for answering also, I am interested in a beach location, cliffside if possible?
thank you ladies!!

ABSOLUTELY they will let you decorate as you please!!! you just have to find the right place! we had our wedding at a French restaurant (it''s a popular spot for intimate weddings), and they let us have candles, floral centerpieces, a DJ, etc.

crown jewel: thank you so much, that is so good to know because I want the venue to still look weddingish (is that even a word? haha) but fh and I agree that food is most important to us, and as we both do not dance, a restaurant should be perfect

thanks again.. now to start looking..

I recommend herecomestheguide.com

That site is amazing for southern california locations. Tons of photos and information. You just need to find a place that doesnt have a minimum and you should be ok.

Our place didnt, and our wine cellar room can only hold 50 people max but it isnt ocean side.

I am getting married at the Chart House in Redondo beach next year. I believe that they do have a room (the Sunset Room i think its called) for smaller parties, but i think it would have to be an evening reception. You can have your ceremony right on the beach next to the restaurant. :)

If you have any questions, I can do my best to help you.

(I wasnt sure if you wanted the reception to be outside, too...or just the ceremony.)

There is also a small park in either Rancho Palos Verdes or Palos Verdes Estates that is on a bluff overlooking the ocean. A co-worker of mine got married there years ago...it was beautiful. No chairs though, we all stood. It was an extremely simple, short and small ceremony. The reception was at a restaurant. Sorry, I can''t remember the name of the park, but if you did a Google search I bet you could find it.

My cousin just got married last month at the Chart House. She had the ceremony on the beach. It was very nice. You can see some of their pro pics on www.joeyikemoto.com under ceremony location "Chart House 9/14/08".

WIth that size of a party, you could always consider renting a boat to be married on.

other options...

Capistranos at the embassy suites Mandalay beach resort has rooms that cater to smaller crowds though and beach side views:

I really like this Cliffs at Laguna Village http://www.herecomestheguide.com/location/detail/cliffs-at-laguna-village

Colettes Oceana has rooms that only hold a max of 60 so getting a room for 20 - 30 shouldnt be too hard http://www.herecomestheguide.com/location/detail/colettes-oceana

Cypress sea cove has a lower beach patio that can hold up to 50 (good size for you and a dance floor. The views from here are pretty stunning http://www.herecomestheguide.com/location/detail/cypress-sea-cove

Descanso Beach Club rents out at $2 for 1-50 people. http://www.herecomestheguide.com/location/detail/descanso-beach-club

Enchanted sea cottage over in Malibu has a kind of hill leading to the ocean and an "ocean blufftop" behind the cottage for a ceremony site. http://www.herecomestheguide.com/location/detail/enchanted-sea-cottage

ALot of the bigger hotels and such usually have a patio or smaller room for smaller partys. Or they can partition off one of the larger ones. If cost is a concern, you can look into having the wedding during an off season. FI and I are saving quite a bit of money by having our wedding in October. Our here (we are getting married in westlake village, cal) it still gets into the 90s in October (like it was today) so we were not really sacraficing much.

I highly recommend browsing herecomestheguide. they also put out a book, if you are not big on online stuff, however, you end up going from the book''s descriptions to the company''s websites anyway so it is usually jsut easier to use their website. One thing I will say is that I felt the book had more options. But the search tools and also the 360 virtual tours on the websites were more helpful for me.

Thanks so much for the help.
DMBfiredancer: the charthouse in Redondo Beach looks beautiful, do they happen to have a wedding coordinator? Oh and will they work with you on creating a menu or is it pretty much set in stone? thanks!

qtiekiki-I was just able to pull up your cousins wedding photos, may I just say she looked stunning, and man what scenery! was that charthouse Redondo beach by any chance?

Gwyn- we are also planning an October wedding (makes it easier for future ann. trips being off season everywhere

)
May i ask a silly side note question? Being an october bride, did you stick to "traditional" fall colors or do you think its ok to go considerably brighter?

DMBFiredancer - Yeah the photographer hasn''t released all the pics yet. He just has the teaser ones on the website.

sctsbride09 - Yes that''s Charthouse Redondo Beach.

We had planned to use brown and a light blue. Kind of like the blue that surrounds the original text when you post a quote (see above). We came into an issue where I couldnt get dresses in the right color for my girls (the two bridesmaids wanted to wear brown and then MOH wanted to wear the blue) so we skipped it and just did brown with some fall accent colors. FI and I both fave color to is brown ( interms of wearing and using in our home and such) so that was a given for us.

Anyway, I think you can definitely get away with brighter colors. especially here in southern Cali where you dont get a whole lot of the leaves changing and such. i think using colors like neon green and bright pink may look a little weird in October if you were in somewhere like New England where most of the places are transformed during fall to have this yellow/orangy/red hue. But in Cali, I dont think it would look weird at all since its still mostly green and bright in October.

I am from back east orginally and always wanted a fall wedding out there so using those colors here was kind of a compromise =)

whew, that makes me feel better, I wanted to do burgandy fushia and champagne. Not sure how they will look together when it comes down to it, Im still really confused by all the planning that is involved in weddings, probably shouldve eloped

Thanks for your help gwyn

I don't know if you are looking at the SD area, but the Prado has a beautiful outdoor wedding site and several different reception options. Several of my friends have been married there. They were very happy with their experience. The food is really good

they have someone who is the coordinator for the day of your wedding. the people there that i have worked with have been very very nice. not a$$-kissy at all - very straightforward and they will do their best do have everything how you want. they have choices for the menu of things that they serve at the restaraunt. its a very good deal there - the view there is amazing out those windows!

good to hear, Im not really a get my a** kissed type of person if you know what I mean haha, just want good food and a great view! thanks again
