Well it is snowing here right now in SE PA. Supposedly winds are supposed to kick in tonight gusting up to 50 mph. Just found out why the electrical poles' wires are up, but I did not see any transformers. Electric company ran out of transformers and are running the electrical lines using gas powered generators. I only know this because a few of my neighbors in back of me asked how long power was out yesterday (they got theirs back Monday night). I told them mine did not go out and asked them why theirs would. That is when I found out that Peco had to come back to put juice into the generators.

I just hope and pray that we do not lose power again. The house with all the pines took down the lines in our area and they still have a few that could topple, not to mention the one that has been dead for about 3 years. Seems you cannot make them take it down. I asked township officials and Peco. Peco can come out to see if it is a hazard to the electrical lines. I guess the tree has to come down on someone walking or driving by before it becomes a hazard. The people living in the house have 4 downed pines to get rid of. The trees are at least 50 years old. They have an additional 6 or 7 left (One came down after last year's storm across the entire street. I later found out that had happened just a minute after a neighbor had driven by. She was so shaken after that had happened that she always goes another way now just not to go past any of their pines again.

Oh soocool... as if you all haven't been through enough already...

Dust to you and your community, soocool!

Stay safe and warm!

It's been snowing here, too, for quite a while, soocool. Big, pretty flakes. The coastal areas have been warned there may be flooding and some people may need to be evacuated, but no one is expecting a big storm here along the Connecticut coast.

I bet the last thing on either of your minds is relaxing and watching the snow; I'm sure the PTSD from Sandy is way too great for that. :((

Soocool- hope your power stays on!

They evacuated our beach neighborhood again just in case of flooding and we still have no power there. It's supposed to gust to 60 mph there tonight. I just hope the areas already ravaged by the Sandy superstorm don't get more damage.

It's snowing lightly in New York city right now but just in case they are shutting power to the elevators where I work for now.

I have watching the news and they said it does not look like wind will be a problem here, but wet snow can also snap trees, but I am thinking those that may be a problem probably already came down.

AGBF - i hope the storm is not severe enough to warrant evacuation in your area.

And, yes it is hard to sit back and enjoy the snowflakes after last week.

Maybe, a glass of wine would help.

Missy, you deserve whatever you need, sweetie!

soocool, I really didn't suffer in Sandy. All I lost was my cellphone and my cable (Internet and television). I am in a coastal town, but do not, myself, live directly on the water. When I predict "getting knocked off the grid" it is from long experience with what coastal storms do here, but we got a generator after five days in frigid temperatures last year. Unless it breaks (as generators do), we should, at least, have heat even if we cannot communicate with the outside world!

Trees can, of course, fall on my house, car, or family...but that can happen to anyone anywhere in a storm. It used to happen to our house in Virginia (which isn't on the coast) all the time. We had one tree break the widow to our Great Room there and another fall into our swimming pool. Huge trees. And those were but a couple of the many that came down! But I am not in a high risk area here in Connecticut like Missy. My heart goes out to her!

Good luck, Missy! And you, too, soocool!!!

Hugs,
Deb

It's still snowing here. This storm had been played down, and since temperatures are supposed to rise I suppose the snowfall here won't be unmanageable for long. However apparently just as almost all (all but 100) households had come back on-line with power today (a week and two days after Sandy), now 1,000 households have already lost power again and the nor'easter (Athena) just started. We have only had snow so far; the winds haven't yet started. And it's supposed to snow all night. I read somewhere we might get 6" to 10". I hadn't expected that much. One of the two shelters open in town for Sandy never shut and now it won't.

Here is a link to an article in our town paper. Remember, the storm just started. All we have so far is a "little" snow.

PS-If I disappear, it's probably just the usual communication disruption that comes with living here. I'll miss you and be bored silly!

soocool, I think about you and DS every time I put my WF hoops on before work. Keep your ears warm.
And what is it with idiot neighbors who won't take dead/dying trees down? I know first hand how hard and expensive it is, but it's much better to do it on your terms instead of Mother Nature's.

Only 2-3 inches of snow here. Winds were not a problem. I am so happy. How did everyone else fare? Hopefully, no problems. Haven't spoken with my Jersey friends yet so don't know how they are doing.

So glad you had no trouble this time, soocool. No problems for me, either, and the roads are open. I don't know, yet, about coastal flooding or total power outages in our town. Snowfall was minimal...nowhere near 6" to 10". Maybe more than 2"-3".

Soocool and Deb-So glad you guys made it through OK !!

We didn't get much snow either but unfortunately our Generac failed! But fortunately we didn't flood in the basement and that was our biggest concern. I cannot believe that after spending all that $$$ to get the generator and permits necessary and installation etc that it worked for 10 days and then pfffft. That is way too much for 10 days of power LOL.

Luckily no major rain/snow in the forecast and I am hoping we get power back soon though the way the neighborhood looks not so sure. Sigh. This is one never ending process that's for sure. We offered my neighbors at the beach a place to stay with us in Brooklyn but they are going to try and wait it out. I cannot believe how long it's been for so many- no power, no heat, no hot water. Ugh. Really want life to get back to some semblance of normal soon. :((

PS Deb, not sure what generator you have but the Generac people said this is a common problem and probably needs a tune up but our electrician cannot do this till power is restored. Just an FYI in case you were interested and I can update you if you would like when we know more about what went wrong with it. I just don't think it is meant for such long usage though our neighbor was shutting it off for an hour everyday and checking the oil etc.

Our generator started leaking oil on Saturday and DH was worried it might not start up again. Well it did not and he tried to figure out what was wrong with it in the middle of the night in the dark. In the morning he changed the oil, replaced the spark plug, cleaned the fuel line and nothing. A few hours later he noticed that oil leaked onto some component and that is why it was not catching. No sooner did he get it started and power came back on. That is why I was worried about power going out yesterday. What if the power went out again? So happy it did not. But I keep nagging DH to take it in to get fixed asap.

Missy, I don't think generators were made to run 24/7 for 10 days. But I think in addition to fixing this one we may buy a new one as a backup. We have had this one since the last hurricane that hit us hard in 1999 - Floyd and we have used it a number of times since then.

Hi soocool- I think you are right! Do you have a natural gas generator? My friend has the same one we do in Maryland and he has a backup to the backup lol. If I learned anything during this time it's that nothing is for sure. I thought a natural gas generator would allow us to have electricity if our power went out and obviously that doesn't hold true for longer periods. I just hope that our electrician can fix it once our power comes back because it was too much money to just get a new one.

Still no prediction when our power will come back- Christie is saying by Sunday but I hear varying reports and it may not be for another week!! ;(

And the gas "shortage" might last at least another few weeks! :(sad

Unfortunately there is no natural gas in my town. We are all electric, some people run either heat pumps, straight oil, or propane. A whole house generator here would have to run on propane. We use petroleum gas.

My friend who has a year round house in Lavallette said they shut off the gas for the next 6-8 months. They are living in upstate PA now, 3 1/2 hours away. Lavallette has put photos of each house by street name up on their website so at least she knows there is no exterior damage. She was going to put the house up for sale this coming spring too. I don't know why they waited so long because they moved to Pa late last year and the house has been sitting empty and unoccupied for all this time. Her family also owned additional property down there but she has not said anything about that. Maybe it had been already sold, I don't know.
