Smashed My Ring...

So...I smashed my ring, literally. I crushed it. Last week I slammed a heavy window on my hand and the platinum band on my engagement ring just bent in half on my finger. I had to force it off of my finger because it was so bent up it wouldn't go over my knuckle. I am devastated and extremely upset. I immediately knew something happened to the ring without having to look at it.

I brought my ring to the jeweler the next morning. Since my ring is made by Ritani, the jeweler couldn't do anything without shipping it out. I was told warranty wouldn't cover my ring, since I "abused" it. I am SO thankful that I had taken out insurance on my ring the month before. Insurance is covering ALL of the damage including the shipping to and from Ritani.

Currently Ritani has my ring, and has had it since last Monday. The jeweler said to expect 2-3weeks before it is back in my hands. I hate that I shipped out my ring, diamond and all. I hate being without my ring. I am just very thankful that I get my ring back in perfect condition (hopefully) with no cost to me.

Just wanted to share! Also, this is proof that insurance can be very useful. I never would have guessed just 4 months after receiving my engagement ring I would have slammed a window on my left hand.

OMG!!! How is your hand??? Are you ok? The ring will be fixed but what about you???

Thank heavens for insurance, that's for sure!

My hand is fine! My mom was next to me when it happened and she thinks the ring prevented my finger from breaking. We have very old heavy windows in our house. It just flew down on my hand without me even realizing what was happening.

That was very lucky! I'm glad you are okay --- new windows in your home's future??? ;))

That would have been terribly upsetting - I'm glad you didn't injure yourself as well. And great news about the insurance...sometimes it really pays off! We had an unbelievable hail storm down here 2 years ago (think: 20% of the city's cars totaled) and were SO thankful for both our car and home insurance. That payout put us ahead in the insurance game for about 15 years! ::)

Wow! That's really awesome and how lucky that you didn't get hurt. Insurance on jewelry is totally worth it, especially since it tends to be really affordable.

So sorry this happend but at least you have insurance.

Was there a diamond in the ring?
If so, was the diamond lost or damaged?

... or when someone says, "band" does that always mean no stones?

I wish! We rent, so the windows stay how they are.

Oh no! I'm glad your hand is safe! How's the diamond doing? Was it also damaged? It's like your finger's guardian angel, or something, if you think about it "saving" your hand!

That's a miracle that your hand came out safely, though your ring was mangled!

Sorry, by band I just meant the bottom part of the engagement ring surrounding the stone, the shank? My ring is a 3-stone ring with micropave on the shank. Sorry I am not very educated in all of the terminology.

Thankfully all of my stones survived. None of the stones (center, side, or micropave) were lost or damaged. The jeweler was stunned.

Diamond is thankfully 100% fine! It was a family heirloom so I would have been devastated if that was damaged. All of my diamonds survived!

What a story! So glad your hand is okay.
My mother did the very same thing to her solotaire almost 50 years ago. Diamond and hand were fine, setting had to be replaced.

Well, first I am glad your hand wasn't hurt! And thank goodness for insurance. I love that three stone Ritani setting. I hope your replacement comes soon!

Glad your hand is okay and your insurance covered your ring. Which company do you have?

That is terrible! At least you didn't hurt your hand or your diamonds! Hopefully they can fix it back to new and get it back to you safely.

Omg I'm glad your hands are ok!!! And extremely glad you have insurance to cover it. Wow! And your stones are ok?! That is incredible!

Our windows are like that, and at my office they need propped up or they slam too, I'm lucky I never lost a finger!

I am glad you didn't get hurt but sorry that your ring took a beating. That is good news the stones are okay and your insurance will cover fixing your ring.

Really glad you (and your hand) are OK! And glad your insurance will take care of the expense of fixing the ring.
Don't you have anything in your lease about unsafe conditions? It seems to me those windows are dangerous and the landlord has an obligation to make them safe.

Wow, that is amazing! So glad you were uninjured, and your diamonds made it too! That alone is pretty incredible.

I think there are laws that are there for renters' protection.. I'd definitely bring it up to the landlord! Heck, replacing those windows would be a heck of a lot cheaper than having to pay out a hefty medical bill that he could be served with!

I hope your hand is okay honey! I'm glad your insurance is taking care of the ring.

Thanks! I just went through my insurance agent and they put me with Commerce Insurance. They are awesome. They barely asked any questions and seemed sorry for me, haha. They have also paid out for my fiances motorcycle that was stolen. We have all of our insurance through them.

Luckily the window that slammed on me is an interior window. We have a sun room and there are windows between our living room and sun room. We barely use it, but we do run some wiring through the window (cable). So I rarely open the window and the time I do, this happened! I hate the windows though. Most of the windows in our place are nice and new, thankfully.

Missy and Madelise - I will have to check our lease and see. We have a landlord that rarely comes around or keeps up our place. On the bright side our rent is really cheap because of that, so we don't complain. I will look it over though. Thanks!

I should be getting my ring back tomorrow! I was told 99% chance of it being delivered tomorrow, if not then Wednesday morning.

I have been without my ring for a month! I am so excited! :D

Woo hoo! Did you take a pic of it when it had been crushed? Maybe you can show us a before and after shot!!

Hope its perfect when it comes back to you :D

I didn't take the best pictures of it crushed! I should have. I will post what I have, it shows that it is no longer round anymore. It does not show any of the side damage though!

Also, the table its laying on makes for horrible coloring.

whoa! you're lucky you managed to squeeze your finger out of that!

ARe they remaking the shank so the melee will be reset safely and not at risk of being lost? I'm sure - but thought I'd ask!

My mom had to pretty much rip it off my finger, I was so upset the pain was the littlest of my concerns.

Apparently, to my understanding, they are making a whole new ring for me and reusing the diamonds. They said since the damage was so extensive that if they tried to fix the shank there was no guarantee that the diamonds would hold. The only way they would guarantee their work was making a whole new ring.

Perfect! All worries have been removed

Post pics when you pick it up!!!
