Do you have similar stories?

For the past 10 years I had a 1.81 ct rb which I thought was modest by PS standards, but I find myself hiding my hand when around my BFFs, hiking buddies, at work in front of my boss(before lockdown.

I also just got a 2.8ct OEC for my 20th anniversary, and when I look at my pictures on PS, I think it is a modest size still....but found myself really self conscious when I ran into neighbors (friends) while walking my dog and once again felt a little ostentatious and over the top!

This was me with me 3.3 ct (and we’re near Seattle, so I mean not exactly a low COL area). I felt so self conscious every time I went out with it on. My coworkers were like, “that’s huge.” Which is why I’m annoyed with myself now for always wanting bigger. Like, didn’t I learn my lesson the first time? I think spending too much time on PS skews reality for me. Can’t wait til I can be around people again. Maybe that’ll kill my current round of DSS.

if you ever run into me please don't hide your ring away
Maybe its not a modestly thing but a confidence thing
practices
people who arnt into jewlery either won't notice or will stop noticing after the 2nd day
wear it to make you happy

You know what people that would think bad of you over a big diamond are not the type of people that its worth worrying about what they think.

I have a 1.40 ct spready double halo radiant which is NOTHING in PS standards that I have to constantly hide in my small *one horse town*

i hate in society there is an elementary that shames people according to their material possessions
think about the peeps with much smaller rings who also feel self concise
life is too short
wear what you want and love it, big, small or in between

Do not worry about what your coworkers say, the ring isn't for them, it's for you.

Whenever I see a really big stone I think "that's huge!" in my head. I don't say it because it seems rude, but the thought itself isn't negative. It's cool to see them and, depending on where you live, may be a rare treat.

 ...Wonder if I'll ever reach that point...

My ring has a 1.55 ct H VVS1 super ideal center stone in a Simon G setting, a total yawner here on PS. IRL I get a lot of comments; "Beautiful ring", "Wow, I need sunglasses around that!", "Does it weigh your hand down?!", and similar. Definitely an attention getter. I posted it on a forum not related to jewelry, and got a ton of comments about it along the same lines.

And then there's the way I look at it....:love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love:

I am similar to @Rons Wolfe in that where I am, my chubby 1.02ct pear, which faces up large, is often commented on, perhaps because my fingers are small at 5.25. I never hide it away, but I often get compliments & usually when I am paying for something in a shop, the shop worker will comment on how pretty & big it is. I think because it's sparkly & pretty rather than it's size, which makes it eye-catching.

Can you imagine people thinking a 1ct is big?!!

My biggest diamond is 3ct but set in a large pendant on a long chain so I don’t think people can read it as easily as “big” or they assume it’s not a diamond. I think people see so many erings that they have some internal sense of what is small/big especially in a solitaire style.

I wear my 3ct diamond pendant almost daily and have had maybe 3 comments on it and don’t feel self conscious at all. Meanwhile I get comments on anything over a 1ct ring every single time I wear one.

Currently I have a mix of diamond and moissy and lab diamond rings. My coworkers who see me daily know the 4ct honkers aren’t mined diamonds haha. I don’t mind telling them at all, especially since they notice I seem to have at least 5 engagement rings.

I do think this forum skews perception.. I was away from pricescope for a few years, and I was just commenting to my DH that while I enjoy pricescope and the lovely people and bling that are on it immensely, it definitely changes your perceptions of "big"

My ring is considered a microscopic diamond chip by PS standards, normal by IRL standards.

I don't think most people even notice our rings and other bling. And when they do I don't believe most have any clue what size it is or how much it costs. I think we are much more sensitive to this issue than the general population. Just my guess.

And anyway, what other people think of me is none of my business.

"The average engagement ring diamond size in the United States is between 0.8 and 1.2 carats. The average cost of an engagement ring is $6,163. Round is the most popular diamond shape, followed by princess and oval."

"To answer this question even further, CreditDonkey conducted an independent survey across several major cities in the U.S. The results we found were:"

Los Angeles: 0.83 carat
New York City: 1.45 carat
Chicago: 1.29 carat
Dallas: 1.04 carat
Miami: 1.08 carat

I think these surveys (and we've debated several here on PS) are so out of touch.
The average woman where I grew up and where I live now has .5 or less.
I used to work as a cashier, and I looked at EVERYBODY'S ring.
Hundreds of people per day.
Very seldom would I see anything around 1 ct.
And I looked, believe me.

I think they only talked to high end jewelers for this survey.
(It looks like James Allen sponsored the article.....hmmmmmm.....)

They didn't go out on the street to talk to the average woman.

There are likely better surveys out there but it seems about right from here.

When I was young, the usual in my circle was a quarter or a third of a carat, and upgrades seemed less common too. But that was years ago and is not as typical now.

It is rare to see a diamond larger than 1 carat in my neck of the woods. Most people seem to like and wear diamonds around .5 to .75 carats. A few younger ladies wear the "big" 1 carat diamonds.

I am pretty sure that in my area most people just assume my "big" 1.24 and 1.73 carat diamond e-rings are fake, so I don't feel self conscious when wearing my rings. I was shopping in a mall a few years back and a random man yelled out to me "Are those real?" when I walked by. And he was talking about my rings.......lol.

I agree PS leans to the far high end. Where I live, large diamonds (or diamond look-alikes) aren't all that uncommon nowadays but in some surroundings, I too feel like my ring stands out in a way I don't like.

But people's reaction to that, or anything else that stands out about me, has also come to serve as something to watch, as far as how close I should be with that person. And also just kind of interesting about human nature.

Once I went to a birthday party for a new-ish friend, and a woman there made a bunch of noise about how my diamond was "blinding her." At first, I thought she was complimenting me, though maybe after having drunk a little too much. But then I realized it was more that nasty-nice kind of thing.

I ruled out jealousy over money since I knew she had a good job. My next guess was she may have felt threatened over my new friendship with "the birthday girl," since they'd been close friends for a long time.

Maybe I should have just asked her why she was braying like a donkey lol.

Size is very context/location dependent. When I briefly had a .70 carat cbi ring my MIL said in a doubtful tone "that's big" (even though parents in law could be considered well off she kept her original engagement stone which was 1/2 or less). In 90%+ of the world anything over a carat, and often anything over half a carat is "big".

In my area I see stones even the size of mine and occasionally larger, although smaller is for more common. What I don't see is cut quality. Most diamonds I see look like a dull piece of glass. Twice in the 4 months I've had it I've had wearers of stones like that comment on how different mine looks, "Why doesn't mine sparkle like yours does?" sort of questions. Just yesterday I noticed one in the 1/2 to 3/4 range that looked really well cut, that stood out to me. I complimented it to the lady, she told me it's a James Allen True Hearts.

I also just got a 2.8ct OEC for my 20th anniversary, and when I look at my pictures on PS, I think it is a modest size still....but found myself really self conscious when I ran into neighbors (friends) while walking my dog and once again felt a little ostentatious and over the top!

Congrats! You have to post pictures!!!
BTW, I don’t consider a 2.8 carat OEC small by PS standards at all. I alway feel anything bigger than 1.5 carats is pretty big. 2.8 carats is a honker on PS!
I have a few different rings with different size diamonds and I find it’s more of the settings that get attention rather than the size of the diamond.
For example I have a 1 carat radiant set in a pink diamond halo by Diamonds by Lauren. That ring has received far more compliments and gets so much more attention than my 3 carat ACA.
I think you’re just self conscious about it but I get it, I am also the same way.

@kayla17, is is a Lab grown OEC, look in the Lab Grown Diamond, plenty of pictures!

Fun fact. Even when I wasn’t married I used to wear a large cz ering just to avoid getting “chatted up” if I was going out with my girl friends. I think it was like 2ct or so, something easily spotted haha

So glad to see DF's PS stats are back, regardless of how he gets them. I kind of miss this.

Emotie not working for me today...

Well said!

I saved my own hard earn money to buy own jewellery, and nothing can take away that pride from me.
