Well, we are looking to get married in October of 2008 (if a venue is available, but that''s another rant.. ) And I was told that my bm dresses had to be a floor length since we were looking to have the ceremony around dusk (about five thirty or six..) Well, I work in a store that has some great black, tea length dresses. And I was going to use my discount to let the girls get whatever black dress looked good on them - I want my bms to be comfortable in the dress that best fits their bodies. So my silly question is do the dresses need to be floor length or is tea length appropriate?

I''m thinking of something along these lines... the second one doesn''t fit the model well, at all. But you get the idea...

Hi. I got married in October of 2006 at 5:30 and never once was "informed" of the length of gown appropriateness. We had ours at a fairly "swanky" place and my BMs wore tea length and quite frankly, it was lovely!

I think you are being so considerate of your BMs by helping them out like this.

And no, not a stupid question :)

Oh.. sweet.. That makes things much easier... Did they wear hose, close toed shoes, strappy shoes?

My BM''s will be wearing tea-length dresses at my wedding too, and we also are having it at night.

I was pretty mellow about that and let them decide. I don''t think any of them wore hose. They wore shoes that they wanted to wear. It was all about them feeling fabulous, ya know? I told them to diva it up to whatever extent they wanted. One BM, who actually never wears dresses, chose to wear one (I told her I was fine with her in a tux) but wore flats. Another got really decked out and wore some fierce heels.

It''s about what you want, as much as you can. People start pulling out some pretty, ummm, archane rules regarding weddings. Some people also pull out some odd rules from various parts of their anatomy. Go with what works with your vision!

Your bridesmaids can wear tea length, it sounds like the person who told you that they must be floor length is citing the traditional requirements for a formal wedding. However, a traditional formal wedding party would not wear black at all, so don't even worry what this person is saying--you are defying tradition!

As long as you are comfortable with what your attendants are wearing, then I think your dress choices are lovely. (I am extremely biased, though--WHBM is my FAVORITE store in the world, I spend nearly all of my fun money there!)

Traditionally, a formal wedding takes place on a weekend evening in a house of worship, private home, or garden, has 200 plus guests, a full band or orchestra, engraved wedding invites, etc. etc. Most modern weddings are really semiformal, and I think your WHBM dresses will look absolutely stunning and absolutely appropriate on your bridal party. (And do share pics if you choose them, please!)

ETA: I have the Ella Strapless in black with a black sash--it's gorgeous!!!! I just bought it, although I have nowhere to wear it to, yet.

Oh, gosh, I''ve worn tea-length at night, short at night, full-length in the morning and afternoon...I guess we''ve broken every rule out there, and I''ve never heard that it should''ve been otherwise! Little do we know, huh???

Do whatever makes you happy, and your girls will love you for letting them pick out the dress they like the best! Good luck!

That''s why I started working there - for the discount! I love the Ella! We aren''t a store that carries bridal, but we have had a few float through and they are gorgeous!! One season, they had a polka dot sash with it. It was too cute!

I am planning on having my ceremony around 4-5pm and want the girls to wear tea length dresses. The fabric and style of dress will be formal enough for a wedding. My mother said that floor length is the *only* kind of formal dress appropriate but I just disagree!!! (she''s very traditional)

Just go with whatever you like! I don''t think there should be any rules, as long as you love it then it''s good enough!

This really made me giggle!
