I have a handed down sofa that is in good shape, but poor taste. I like the idea of fitted slipcovers, but DF has no faith that one will look like anything more than awkwardly added fabric.

Did you slipcover your sofa? I''d love to see it.

Do you mean slipcover like a universal one you can buy at a store, or a custom made one? I''ve never seen the universal type look good (though I''m sure there are exceptions). Custom slipcovers generally look great. Its a more casual look, but the cover is fitted to the sofa and can have details like piping that make it look finished and not like you threw a sheet over it (look up the Ektorp sofas on Ikea).

If I remember right, we have this one - the color is a lot darker in person, kinda mossy:

It''s not perfect - we didn''t want to spend a bunch of $ on it, and if we spent $200 + we could have gotten some really neat stretchy ones (there''s one with a video that shows this on the Bed Bath and Beyond website). Anyway, it looks pretty good, especially when we''ve just tightened/tucked everything. It does shift a bit after a month or so. My trick is to take a dowel rod and tuck it in the crease behind the cushions to make it stay. Also, it has some stain repellent treatment on it which is great.

OK, I have a question about slipcovers for sofas. How do you handle sofas with large plush pillows at the back. Does the slipcover go over the pillows or are you supposed to buy/make covers for the big pillows? I have a couch that I really want to cover, but it''s got 3'' long fluffy pillows at the back that don''t sit snugly against the back.

Well this is a bit different because ours came with the slipcover-but ours has separate covers for the pillows.

Mayachel: I think ours is a nice example- It''s the Charleston slipcovered sofa from Pottery Barn.

BUT I think most one size fits all slipcovers don''t look great. You should get as close to custom fit as you can IMO.

I don''t have any pictures of ours that we had, but we bought it at Target-Casual Home Slipcover Collection in Beach House Tan. I don''t like slip covers but we were able to get a pretty good fit & with decorative pillows it looked nice.

I was looking at ones on JCP''s website (though now I need to check out BBB) that are supposedly super stretchy, in multiple directions. The end result would be a "fitted" look, though they are one size fits all. They are customized for the shape of the seat cushions. Though they only show a love seat with a single bench cushion.

HH-I think I know the type of couch you mean-I tend to think if you were going to cover it, that you would have to turn it into one giant pillow. I haven''t come upon any that are shaped around those back pillows.

SDLady, I agree that there should be a way to do this without going the custom route. I''ve seen sets that cover love seats/couches/chairs/ottomans. Maybe the sectional is out there?
