Wedding seamstress question

hi everyone,

i have a random question.
i was referred to a seamstress and she will be coming to see me at my place.

all i know about this lady is that she works at a reputable/ high-end bridal shop and the person who introduced me to her is another seamstress i never met.
so ... despite the complication/ loose connection, there is nothing i really know about the seamstress who will be working on my dress.

my question is, am i being paranoid or would it be ok for me to ask to see an ID or something.

what do you think?

LOL Maybe you are paranoid, but a total stranger is being let into your house, so if you feel the need to ask her for identification, do it!

I wig out about certain things too, but who cares? I certainly don''t anyway.

i don''t want to offend anyone ... but she''s taking my $$$ dress with her and i feel like i need some sort of protection.

Honestly, I would feel weird. About her coming into the house, knowing where I live, and for taking my dress without someone either being there with me or without some sort of business information that checks out.

You might see if she shows up on the better business beureau (sp) or local wedding forums. It would put your mind at ease. Also, ask if she has pictures of her work; she may keep some and you will know what you are dealing with

i don''t think my lady will show up in local BBB, simply because it''s not like she has her own business.

i had a phone number of a woman who works for a very well known bridal shop (she fixed my friend''s wedding dress a few years back). she worked the same way--came to see you, picked up the dress, and worked at home on the side, while working at the bridal shop during the day. unfortunately, this lady couldn''t take my job and asked people at work if anyone wanted to fix my dress.

so, part of my worry is quality ... even though if she was able to work at that shop for 5+ years, i''m assuming she''s good.
thus, the more real concern is what can i do to prevent her from running away with my dress.
should i insist on coming to visit her instead?
or am i even crazy to worry about this ... since she should want to make money fixing my dress, not stealing my dress.

The one problem I see is that if something goes wrong (heaven forbid), you have no recourse to make it right..

If you were having it done by the shop, they would be responsible for problems. With her "working on the side'', this may be cheaper for you but you leave yourself a bit vulnerable.

Maybe you can draft out a quick/informal "contract" or letter stating :

Ms. Seamstress at HerAddress will be taking your DesignerWeddingGown on ThisDate to make alterations. Ms. Seamstress should have the dress returned by no later than AbitraryDateBeforeWedding. Calidaisy will be paying Ms. Seamstress $X for her services by AbitraryDate.

If you want you can put in how many fittings you''ll want/need and the location. Have her sign it and you sign it.

It''s not a real contact or anything, more like an "invoice" of services. That way if anything happens you have SOMETHING you can track her down with.
