Edited to say: I think I have too much time on my hands !!! it was only a freaking overcharge for tea, silly ! I was reading other people's posts who have real issues and realize I am a goose! I think I was mad because we are so trying to be careful with money now. Sorry- I would delete the post if I could figure out how. How about I re-write it:

If you go to Saltgrass Steakhouse and they ask you if you want flavored tea, be prepared to pay $4.50 per glass for the pleasure.

Original stupid insignificant rant:

Ok, it is near DH birthday and we decided to splurge for a lunch using a coupon, $7 off two entrees at Saltgrass steakhouse. The first thing the waitress says is Would you like some flavored tea with your lunch? I usually get water , but as a mini celebration we say yes, I told her I would get the same flavor my husband got so it would be easier for her when she needs to refill the glasses. The teas come, but instead of her pouring from a pitcher it is from individual twist-cap glasses like you would buy in the store.

Then the bill comes. Each tea was $4.50 for a total of $9.00 just for the tea!!!!! DH meal was only $9.99 and mine maybe $10.99 so the drinks were 1/3 the total order. The $7 coupon did not even pay for the tea!!!!

Am I being too picky. Don't you think a family style, middle priced restaurant should inform you they are giving you $4.50 drinks when places like Olive Garden it is a normal price?

Oh and a gentleman comes in and is seated behind me and I see the waitress bringing out a wine glass with lemon on the rim and a bottle of Evian!!! I'll bet he'll be surprised, too. So that is what I would have gotten if I had asked for water.

I wrote them an e-mail from the Saltgrass website complaining, gouging customers isn't a good policy in today's economy.
Would you all have been unhappy, too?

Don''t be upset or think that you over-reacted! I HATE when people upsell you without telling you what the costs are. Now, I fully believe that ultimately believe it is the customer''s responsibility, but the casualness with which they just slip it by.....

I fell for it, too.....

Oh thanks so much Upgradeable and Loriken for the replies and support-- I was afraid I might to be shunned with the dreaded--200+ views and no replies. They know darn well people are not expecting the tea to be that much and I think it is wrong for them to be sneaky. We were too shocked to say something at the time, it''s just been simmering in my mind since lunch. I mean we were trying to save money, hence the lunch instead of dinner and finding a place with a coupon. Big joke on me that the coupon didn''t even cover the tea!! I really know that the man behind me wasn''t the kind to order Evian, so I really wonder what his response was. For the future, if it is in a separate bottle I will refuse it.

Upgradeable--I agree, it was ultimately my responsibility to ask about the price when it arrived in the bottle, that''s why I didn''t argue at the restaurant, but I am still sad I am $9 poorer.
Lori--was it Saltgrass restaurant, too?

Yep, it was a Saltgrass.....I only drink unsweet iced tea and this was a peach tea...my favorite unsweet flavor. I enjoyed it, but it was expensive and I had no idea!

The best thing you can do is email them and let them know your experience. When the waitperson offers a special item that is not on the menu they should tell you the price. No one expects to pay $4.50 for bottled tea, I don''t care what flavor it is.

I was a bartender at a restaurant for awhile and we had alot of drinks like that (thai tea and thai coffee and other like non alchie drinks) I made at the bar). They didn''t offer refills and before I would ring in their order for beverages if someone asked for one of those I would ALWAYS tell them that no refills came with it. It was part of my job being a knowledgable member of the staff.

I think you should be more upset with your waitstaff then the restaurant. It is something really silly and small but it sounds like it ruined your evening and that''s really not cool.
